Second note from the editor There have been reactions from people belonging to different religious dominations, or is it nominations, about the story of Jerusalem and the birth of little baby Jesus. The Christians are quick to point out that little baby Jesus was born in Bethlehem and not Jerusalem. It was in Jerusalem that he found his end, they say. They are sure the Donkey must have heard the story at least once a year while he grew up and he still got it wrong, but they forgive him as he is only a donkey. The Hindus use the Donkey’s observations as proof that Jesus was a false profit. The Buddhist comment gently that it is what it is and a group of Islamic extremists called and asked where the baby is now as they ... read more

Day 14 Wellington to Nelson, 3.5 hrs. on the ferry and 110km on Spot. Showpony makes a comeback of sorts The Donkey got dropped off at the ferry terminal by Butterfly and the busy little hen early the next morning. The weather had finally turned and was beautiful. The crossing was smooth which was good as donkeys do not have sea-legs. The highlight of the trip was a huge school of dolphins accompanying the boat in the middle of Cook Strait. All the passengers were oohing and aahing. Everybody loves dolphins, the Donkey thought. Surely it does not happen often that a donkey with a bike called Spot traveled on a ferry but nobody took any notice of the Donkey. He wished he was a dolphin The Donkey sat beside a desert rabbit from Dunedin who ... read more

“Ugh… what’s that light? Who’s that rummaging about at this time of night? Is that Mike? Wait, no, it can’t be morning already can it?” But it was morning. And time to move. I wasn’t even in all that bad of shape all things considered. No headache but I felt exhausted. I hastily packed my bag and went downstairs, electing for a hearty breakfast of water and only water. Today we would be leaving for the South Island by ferry. Hopefully nobody was prone to sea sickness, though this probably wasn’t going to be an issue as the ferry was enormous. A 10 deck behemoth with cafes and 2 movie theatres, it was the size of a small cruise-liner. Once aboard I felt the need to have some breakfast. Something horribly unhealthy with cheese and carbs ... read more

Here we are in New Zealand and things are not starting brilliantly. Yes, the dinner last night was fantastic (Harbour Lights), and the wifi works and we had a comfortable night’s sleep in the eclectic Collingwood Manor B&B here in Nelson, at the northern end of New Zealand’s South Island. And the helmets we bought online and sent to Wozz the airbrush artist have arrived safely at the B&B and look great. And all the people on the tour with us, including John Fitzwater of GoTourNZ.com, seem pleasant and colourful characters. Yet I find myself irritated by three things. Firstly, we are about to be hit by cyclone Gita that is expected to bring 200mm of rain in one day with winds of up to 150Km per hour. Secondly, I already know I can’t close my ... read more

The next days after my birthday Logan and spent going to an exhibition called WOW (World of Wearable Art) and driving to Motueka, which is a town not far away from Nelson, to enjoy one of these wonderful sunsets that you can appreciate every evening up here. Also we went for a hike but unfortunately we didn't make it to the top because I had a very bad headache and the weather forecast was rain and thunder. Furthermore we went kayaking in Abel Tasman, where we saw seals on the rocks, who were even swimming around our kayak, AMAZING! To end this perfect day we dediced to spoil ourselves with fish&chips in a fancy restaurant. The 2th December we went to a market in Nelson, where I tried a traditional fried bread from Maoris. The rest ... read more

I'm back to civilisation after the Milford Track and I'm not sure if I'm happy or sad... At first we, Adela and I, had to take a ferry for 1h30 to finally start this famous track that I was waiting for so long. The first day we just had to hike 5 kilometers which was nothing compared to the other days. As we had the whole afternoon we decided to go to the lake next to the hut. This and playing cards in the evenings became part of our journey during the next days. The first two days were through a beautiful rain forest valley surrounded by mountains covered with snow. Because of the heavy snow last week and because of the sunny weather this week there were hundreds if not even thousands of waterfalls flowing ... read more

Nous ... read more
