And so to part 2 of our Festive Season epic - sorry for the long delay between the Christmas Day match report and this, but we've been well busy and having to take work home with me for evenings and weekends doesn't help me find the time to do this. There'll be a load of pictures added here too - we took 110 in 4 days and it'll be hard for me to pick the best but I'll do my best and I hope I get the names of the places right. Not that you’d know better, anyway..... Day 0 - Wellington to Picton We got our kit together on Boxing Day and then headed to the ferry terminal for the 3-hour journey to Picton. Although its on the South Island, Picton is actually level with ... read more

After our night in Nelson it was back on the bus again - this time to Picton where we met up with some more of the girls, Joanne (another brit) and Delis (a kiwi), and got a boat over to Furneaux lodge in the Marlborough Sounds... home for the next 3 nights. We'd chosen to spend New Years here for a number of reasons... we wanted to be near the sea but away from the hussle of a big town or city (well, big by NZ standards), it's a beautiful spot, it was in the right direction back to Welly... oh and there was a live band playing for NYE!! We had a tiny bit of blagging to do when we arrived at Furneaux lodge..... Joanne and Aileen were late additions to the trip and by ... read more

chambermaiding is as fun as cleaning could be. we joke and talk all while scrubbing bathrooms and making beds. heh. the women i work with called me 'cheeky' the other day. they explained that it means that i'm a smartass....or something. one of them offered to take me to the local marae which is where the maori people of the area congregate for tribal meetings. think 'whale rider.' it's a real honor to be welcomed onto a marae as a guest so i'm excited. driving the van is fun too. i've made friends with the guys who park next to me: graham and 'grumpy steve' (who isn't grumpy at all....just older). they tell me silly jokes about kiwis and stories about the people who have stayed in their backpackers over the years. i get to laugh ... read more

August 11th 2005-August 13 2005. http://www.travelblog.org/gmaps/map_iS.html *To better view these photos- click on "Full Image" I knew I couldn't let Charles leave the country without taking him to the South island. We were both south island newbies, and decided to explore together. We set out on thursday morning, after a quick breakfast, and a rather hurried and frantic rush to catch the Interislander Ferry (I somehow 'forgot' where the ferry terminal was- We barely made it...sheesh). We settled in to the Ferry and enjoyed a scenic, and sometimes bumpy 3 hour cruise to Marlborough Sounds. Our destination: The Bay of Many Coves Resort in the Queen Charlotte Sound. The ride was beautiful- we waved goodbye to Wellington City Skyline and looked ahead excitedly towards the Snow capped peaks of the kaikoura Mountains and the deepblue green ... read more

I arrived at the ferry terminal in Welly only to bump into a couple I'd met in Taupo. Small world. Turns out we were planning on walking the Queen Charlotte Track on the same days and staying at the same hostel in Picton. And it was a lurvely hostel - free tea/coffee, free breakfast, free pick ups from the ferry (only 500m away but excellent for those of us with so many bags!!) and best off all - free apple crumble and ice cream every night.... yummmmmmmmmmy. Could have stayed here a while, almost did.... ahhhh On my first day in Picton I went on the post boat around the Marlborough Sounds and discovered 2 things - the Sounds are flooded rivers rather than glacial valleys and despite the number of homes around the Sounds comparatively ... read more

I know you all have been waiting to read about the conclusion of Tanya and I's South Island Tour. It is hard to believe that it has been over a month since I returned from such an incredible trip. It is hard to pick a favorite part of the trip because we were able to see and do such incredible things. We concluded our trip with a couple days spent along the Queen Charlotte Track. The track is 67km and takes about 5 days to hike. It is also possible to bike the track. The track "starts" at the northern point of Ship's Cove and is accessible by the track itself or by water. Due to our limited time we were only able to travel a short portion of the track. We took a water taxi ... read more

So today we came back from this wonderful 4 days hike. As I mentioned before, we walked a lot... The first 2 days were very tiring, walking 51 km total (plus some uncounted track to get to the place you sleep...). The nice thing about this track is that you sleep in backpackers, with a shower and a kitchen, and not in a "mountain hut". In additon, the big bag is transferred by a water taxi from one point to the next. So it was just us, some water, some lunch picnic and some goodies (we love marshmalloes here!). The views on the way are, as usual, so beautiful. It's very different from the previous places, as we are by the sea and we see it all the time, bays and coves (=small bays), blue and ... read more
