Oct 23-25 with the Woods at their home in the Sounds - Queen Charlotte Sound This was a really special weekend for us with our very good friends, the Woods. It was so nice of them to make this trip happen for all of us, only their youngest, Blake, wasn't with us as it was his special weekend in Wellington with his grandparents. Oct 23 - We left Timaru at close to 4pm on Friday with a 6-7 hour drive ahead of us - through some of my most favorite areas of New Zealand, the Kaikoura coast. We made a dinner stop at Cheviot at a lovely art gallery cafe, Two Rivers. I drove our car with Kim, Syd, Avery and Jonte. Gregg, Dave, Graham and Alex were in their ute. In Kaikoura Gregg and Kim ... read more

Monday morning came and Raphael and I were dragging our bags through the streets of Christchurch, looking for the Wicked Campervan offices. After I very hard 15 minute walk (I am out of practice at dragging around a backpack), we found the Wicked offices. After some paperwork and an introduction to our new home for the next 17 days we were picking up some food supplies. I have no camping experience and don't have two clues on what we really need and what we don't. We fueled up and hit the road, driving the streets of Christchurch without any idea which way north really was. So after some backtracking and a friendly guy at the traffic lights who told us which way was north we were on our way. While we were driving we decided we ... read more

The ferry crossing to the south island was a bit mixed. When we woke up that morning I said to Michelle that the ferry hadn’t a hope of going the weather was that wet and wild. We left our campsite at 6am and drove for 20 minutes to the check-in point. Other cars and camper vans were queuing so we had some hope. Soon we were on the boat and the weather had cleared a little bit. As we left the port you could see the waves were choppy. Soon we were out at sea and the boat was bouncing up and down and from left to right. I thought I wouldn’t be bothered by the motion of the boat but we both started to feel sea sick. Most of the people on the boat were ... read more

Late on Christmas Day, we packed up the car and on Boxing Day we headed north, bound for Anakiwa in the Marlborough Sounds. We drove SH1, following the Pacific Ocean's stunning craggy coast and stopped to eat leftovers from Christmas as a packed lunch just north of Kaikoura. In contrast to the rainy Christmas Day we'd just experienced the weather had decided to become summer again and we had a great day road tripping. We passed through the towns and vineyards of the Marlborough wine region (resisting the temptation to stop at Wineries) and then bought provisions in Havelock before driving around the edge of Queen Charlotte Sound. We arrived late afternoon at the excellent Anakiwa Backpackers in time to meet the new owners (plus dog and 12-week old kitten) and cool off by jumping straight ... read more

Saturday, 6 December 2008 It was time to leave the Sounds. Our plan is to be in Auckland for Christmas and after the excitement of the last couple of weeks it was good to have the boat in working order, everything shipshape, Captain and No 1 both on board and the weather promising a good sailing across Cook Strait on Friday. We needed to fuel up before leaving Waikawa Bay Marina, and of course the wind got up just as we were ready, so while it did not go exactly to plan we managed extremely well working as a team. No tears from the Captain, and no words from No 1. We were back on an even keel. The Captain decided to move to the outer Sounds on Thursday afternoon in readiness for an early start ... read more

Wednesday, 2 December 2008 As the Captain sailed off to visit Pelorus Sound last Tuesday, I was on my way to stay with long time friends Mark and Kerry Roberts. The Captain, of course, thought I had mutinied, but all the excitement had just culminated in my need for some time out. I thought of my son Alex, a marine engineer, who goes to sea for three months at a time. I suspect that when he is at sea he yearns for the land, but have noted that when he is on land he yearns for the sea. I suspect I have similar tendencies because after a day on land, having slept well and enjoyed the company of my friends I was ready to get back on board. The Captain was busy trying to catch every ... read more

Tuesday, 25th November The next challenge in our continuing saga, was getting off the Waikawa Marina fuel wharf once the boat had been repaired. Tony, from Charter Link (a bloody good guy), had been up the mast on the Thursday evening to free the halyard, and came back on Friday morning to fix the motor. I took the opportunity to go for a nice long walk round Waikawa. The Marina itself is quite large and the facilities are top notch. We did not go into the Boat Club but did have lunch in the Jolly Roger which is right on the marina and is a bar/café. Waikawa is quite populated and I walked through some fairly new housing developments. There are several Marine type businesses close to the marina and also apartment type living. It was ... read more

Thursday, November 20, 2008 Yesterday, after spending the morning getting email out and waiting for the washing to dry (the boat did look comical with clothing and linen festooned all over it) we went back to Tawa Bay in Endeavour Inlet to spend the night in order to give us a head start this morning. The weather forecast was perfect for moving out into the Strait and round to Pelorus Sound. Tawa Bay really has to be one of the most beautiful spots I have ever been in (and I catch my breath at many of the sights around this country). We motored in to the same mooring we had had while John was with us and spent the first ten minutes watching a beautiful red jellyfish moving past the boat. I fondly imagined it was ... read more

On Tuesday 11th November 2008, we set sail in Hakura from Wellington Harbour across Cook Strait and through the Tory Channel into Queen Charlotte Sound. Crew consisted of Doug Nichol, Captain, Lorraine Miller and John Hadfield. The trip across the Strait was great. A fresh to strong breeze, gusting to about 25 knots, sea moderate. We got quite a big swell and every time I looked round the corner to see where we were I copped a face full of water, at at one stage a wave broke over us which went right down my back, but the sailing gear is great and keeps you warm and relatively dry. The wind was coming from the north west so progress was slow and we could not head straight for Tory channel. We ended up under motor, much ... read more

Queen Charlotte Track This is an easy 3-5-day hike with stunning Marlborough Sounds views. It's located at the top of New Zealand's South Island, near the harbour where the ferry comes in from the north island. I took a small taxi boat to the end of the track and hiked back toward the harbour. Besides the views, the best part was that I didn't have to carry food or luggage. There are several lodges along the track with restaurants and little shops, and the taxi boat transferred my luggage from point to point for me each day! They make it so easy for you to hike here in New Zealand...... read more
