Well, it has been quite a while since I last wrote. Internet keeps getting more and more expensive, so I waited until a reasonable place. I'm currently in Franz Josef Glacier. It's a cute little town. Tomorrow I am doing an all day hike. This should be interesting. The city is very pretty. It sits in the foothills of the Southern Alps. Snow capped mountains all around. I love my current hostal. Very cozy... So, back to where I left off. From Napier I went to Wellington. I was pretty tired on the bus and ended up sleeping for part of the trip. Most of it was grey and raining anyway. I woke up when we were coming into Wellington. This is another unique city. It sits on the edge of hte mountains and next to ... read more

Where Life Turns Into One Big Bob Ross Painting Quite a challenge finding internet access out in the boondocks, so I'm doing several days postings while I can get logged in. We've long wondered if Bob Ross (God rest his soul) created the landscapes in his painting straight from his idealized imagination ... or if they were inspired by somewhere real. Little did we know he'd apparently spent a lot of time in New Zealand. Snow-capped mountains that descend into lakes so blue and pristine they act as a mirror to the heavens. There are simply not words to do it justice. But I'm certain Bob was a frequent traveller to New Zealand. (Although there still only appears to be one sun in the sky here, and Bob frequently seemed to paint with several sources of ... read more

Since my last post I have travelled over to the South Island of New Zealand, and have made my way almost all the way down the west coast (a change in bus company was prompted by the old company wanting me to get up a full 3 hours earlier than the new one). I stopped off for a few days in a town called Nelson, which I told was always sunny. False advertising. But at least it has (almost completely) stopped raining now! Last week the main event was a two day trip in Abel Tasman National Park, a huge area of forest (and I do mean huge, the forests here put our paltry woods in the UK to shame; to those who enjoy a good forest stroll, let me say that I am really being ... read more

we might have been forgiven for thinking that the weather gods were not looking over us when we woke at Fox Glacier the following morning. We woke at around 5.30am to hear the rain pouring down and unsurprisingly when we woke up Mount Cook was covered in cloud and our scenic flight was not happening. However this gave us the opportunity to go for a quick walk around Lake Matheson before our glacier hike that was starting at 9.30. Unfortunately the reflections on the water for which this lake is famous only served to dampen the mood and put Jules more firmly into the gloom of not seeing Mount Cook from the helicopter. Nonetheless we headed for the glacier at 9.30 and had a fantastic day - the cloud gradually lifted as we walked through the ... read more

Apparently, there are more sheep than people in New Zealand. Having spent the last two weeks driving round the southern part of the South Island, I reckon it's true. I counted loads of sheep and only 6 people. I bring this episode to you from somewhere in the vicinity of the Fox Glacier (so called because it resembles a mint, allegedly). Haven't seen it yet, as there has been a load of cloud, but I will check it out tomorrow and let you know how it is. Our camper van is slow but methodical and we are enjoying life in it immensely, apart from when the toilet cassette is full. We have already covered a fair distance in it and will need to cover a fair bit more if we are to fulfil our promise and ... read more

I just turned 25; so to mark the milestone I spent my birthday hiking a glacier on Mt. Cook. Mt. Cook is New Zealand’s largest mountain located on the West Coast, it is also home to the Fox and Franz Josef glaciers and temperate rain forests. The Fox glacier is a little further south than Franz Josef, and while it is bigger its not quite as popular as Franz Josef. According to our guide, Fox Glacier is actually one of the few glaciers in the world getting bigger, ironically because of global warming and the glacier its self is actually moving about one meter a day. We went on a half-day hike up to and then onto the glacier and got some amazing views. Fortunately the weather cooperated with us, though it was a little ... read more

Today we arrived in Franz Josef and talk a little walk in the pouring rain to go and touch a glacier; unfortunately we couldn't touch it because the river bed had flooded so we had to look instead! Stopping in a gorgeous park - with spa's, bars (happy hour in an hour so won't be around long) and hopefully nice hot showers!... read more

Well WE ARE ALIVE, will explain in a moment! Okay hokitika yesterday, seeing some of the local craftmen at work on jade, known here as pounamu. Also seen a kiwi close up at the eco world there, well worth the visit even if it is just for the kiwi enclosure, the rest was a bit naff and shabby looking. A drive to Franz josef yesterday afternoon, stopping off to get lost around lake kaniere. We are currently staying at athe rainforest retreat camp site which is awesome and we are parked in the middle of rainforest. Facitlities amazing, outdorr spa and fab bar. Today we did soemthing of my choosing and climbed the fran josef glacier, with the franz josef glacier guides. This is the stupidest idea I have ever had considering my fear of heights. ... read more

So I've not added anything in quite a while. I think the entries will probably get more and more scarce from this point forward. I've been using Wellington as my home-base, as it had free internet and whatnot. I won't be returning there again and per-minute internet is realllly expensive. I've now split from the girls and I'm travelling the south island with my friend Casey, who I go to school with at DePaul. He's been travelling Australia for the last month, and is spending another 30 days here in NZ. We met in Wellington on the 18th, only about an hour after my return from my excursion with the girls in the south. This is our second day together and we've made it as far down as Fox Glacier, which is maybe a 20 minute ... read more
