Oh My... We've been having quite a time these past few days.... We Left Golden Bay and the NorthWest Coat and headed for the west coast. We stopped back in Nelson on our way because we HAD to check out the WOW museum. WOW (world of wearable-art) is a fashion show held every year in Wellington, though it is based on the South Island in Nelson. The Show consists of numerous categories where New Zealand and International artists/costume designers create the most outlandish designs they can think of. The museum is an archive of last years entires and was absolutely amazing. I don't know if I liked the room with the blacklights and glowing costumes, or the flax-woven dress made so intricately it must have taken all year, better. It was really a costume designer's dream ... read more

Drove from Franz Josef Glacier to Fox Glacier. Passed through Haast Pass en route - amazing snowtopped mountain scenery. Arrived at Queenstown, staying at the Alpine Lodge Hostel which is a beautiful town. It's buzzing enough to keep you entertained by day and night, and has a stunning mountain setting. We'd really love to see it in winter and come snow boarding/skiing. ... read more

Well by now we were all prepared to be writing in the style of Big Brother ... "Dey nine in the Big Bovver Campervan and the vanmates are getting ratty...", but am relieved to report that no one's been nominated or evicted. Infact vanmate numbers have doubled with the addition of Someone and Somebody (ie, Someone forgot to lock the door and Somebody didn't empty the kettle...). Fortunately, it's very hard to do anything but smile here as everything is as good as we'd imagined it to be. Worked through the lingering pains of DS and headed for Lake Wanaka on Thursday. A cool, relaxing place to break up the journey to the glaciers and rest overnight. The town had lots of good cafes and bars but lost points because we couldn't find a pavlova anywhere. ... read more

We took a day hike on Franz Josef Glacier, which was just over 4 hours ice walking. We were all kitted up with leather boots and crampons etc, given a brief coach on ice walking, and off we went! There were only 13 in our group, and chose to be in the lead group (not that there was much choice for Spen!!), hacking the ice away for the other groups and roping up the steep inclines. The views and satisfaction were great when we got to our peak, which was 2,100 feet up! ... read more

Drove further down the west coast, into the Glacier Country. In winter this area has ski and snow resorts, but all year through the glaciers of Franz Josef and Fox stay solid, and are in fact getting bigger. We booked a glacier walk for the next day and headed on a couple of local walks. We checked out the Canavans Knob Walk, which took us through a little rainforest to a great view of the mountains, and the Tatare Tunnels Walk. The walk was really nice, but the tunnel disappointing. We were told we should take a torch for the 20min walk in the pitch black, wet tunnel to see glow worms. 5 mins in Debs gave up with very wet trainers, and Spen walked the whole length without seeing any! ... read more

Picked up the car, and headed to Riccarton House, home of the Dean family from Scotland, renowned in these parts as being first family from Europe to settle and make names for themselves. The house wasn't open to a full tour, but the manager took us around the downstairs and told us lots of interesting history and things not to miss in NZ generally. Had a bite to eat in their cafe and drove West. Just before Arthur's pass, the scenery was stunning with snow topped mountains for miles - very Lord of the Rings! As we approached Arthur's Pass itself, the weather turned really dark and cloudy with heavy rain which meant we couldn't see any of the apparently has the amazing scenery! Just have to rely on the postcards for Arthur's Pass. Stayed at ... read more

After Lake Wanaka we moved onto Franz Josef where the glaciers are. The drive there was one of the longest and yet again one of the most scenic. This time driving through temperate rainforest through gorges and along huge river beds. Once you hit the wind battered west coast the rainforest takes on a very 'haunted wood look'. It was on this journey we very nearly got stuck for fuel because of the big distances between places and there are not many towns along this way and the petrol stations are not always open. The idea of going to Franz Josef was to go up one of the glaciers by helicopter however it was chucking it down with rain the whole time we were there so we weren't able to. We drove on to Greymouth via a ... read more
