Having finished her university course, Rachael joined me in Christchurch and we travelled across to the West Coast on the TranzAlpine train. This is often named as one of the greatest rail journeys in the world, passing through the Southern Alps, a spectacular area of snow-capped mountains ond gorges. At Greymouth we hired a car and drove to Fox Glacier where we booked ourselves on to a 'heli-hike'. This involved a trip by helicopter up the glacier and a guided walk on the icy surface. The glacier is constantly moving (this one advances about 2 metres every day) and the motion of the ice causes interesting natural features to appear and disappear, often within the space of a single day. These include crevasses (cracks in the ice that can be dangerously deep), ice caves and 'waves' ... read more

Westport, Greymouth and the glaciers…… We didn’t arise too early the night after our night at the Mussel Inn, too many ciders….. After leaving the Mussel Inn, we set off in torrential rain towards Motueka again to check our emails and get some munch. Then it was off to Westport, and it is a fantastic drive. Unfortunately we did it in the early evening so we didn’t see too much spectacular scenery but we saw the sun setting behind some fantastic mountains so that was good. We arrived in Westport late, but luckily just in time to check into a holiday park. There was only one other campervan in the park and it was Jon and Lisa, who we had left that morning! It was pretty good to see them again as we got on and ... read more

The real reason I didn't go bungee jumping is because I chickened out, however; I am sticking with my other reason. Bungee jumping was going to be my expensive splurge in New Zealand, until I found out about heli-hikes where they helicopter you up to the middle of a glacier and, with a guide, you walk around for half a day. My heli-hike almost didn't happen. When I got to the town of Fox off of Fox glacier, the weather didn't look good. I lost the day because of wind and rain, which on my tight schedule was almost a disaster. Plus the town of Fox is about two streets, so not much to do. The second day turned out to be beautiful and I was able to go. It was my first helicopter ride and ... read more

So we are now in the land of Kiwi's. We arrived at Christchurch as it was pouring with rain-where has the sun gone??!!! Thank goodness we had a very nice couple called Sue and Ron who took us in. ( Beths boyfs parents friends as i tried to explain to customs ). Customs was interesting as the sniffer dogs liked the olives we brought over and so had to declare them as well as processed cheese and walking boots-are they not supposed to be looking for drugs??? Sue and Ron were lovely. They cooked us roast dinners and lots of tasty puddings. They MADE us try the local wines and they gave us our own room. Was so weird sleeping on my own again!!! The first thing we did was go out and buy thermals-very sexy!! ... read more

Day 9: Queenstown Action day! This morning I jumped off a mountain. Fortunately, I was attached to Shayne, who was in turn attached to a parachute of sorts. The takeoff was from a point above the snow line, so that I had to do a kind of careful duck-waddle for take-off to avoid slipping. We paraglided for about ten minutes, did a few probably tame but to me thrilling aerobatics, then landed in the field distantly adjacent to the one in which my acrophobic personal photographer was standing, poised to capture the graceful landing. She missed it, but this worked out OK on two counts: first, my landing was decidedly ungraceful, and second, my paragliding host had a camera on the end of a boom that captured wonderfully the essence of our flight. The whole thing ... read more

Hi again! Two days ago we took the bus on this amazing coastal road to Fox Glacier. The whole day we were stopping at little Dept. Of Conservation parks and taking short hikes through the rainforest or strolling around deserted beaches. There aren't any people! No houses! I'm already spoiled and used to the quiet....its going to be weird going back home. Then we arrived in the little town near Fox and ran through the rain from our slightly sketchy 'hotel' to get some dinner. The lady who planned our lunches thought we'd all be crazy about gherkin and ricotta cheese and curry paninis so we're all usually starving by dinner time. We ate in town which was amazingly warm and cozy (and they had veggie burgers woo!) and then went back and did some serious ... read more

Wednesday 26th April 2006 We walked down to the glacier office for 10:30am which is when we had to check in. We were kitted out with all our gear such as ice-boats with metal spikes on them, raincoats, socks, hats & gloves! We then boarded the coach which took us to the valley at the base of the glacier. It didn't look that far at all or very big but it was actually an hours walk to the ice...walking through rivers and the rainforest too. Once at the base of the ice we put our spikes on our shoes and we were ready to get climbing! The group was split into 2 groups 13 and our guide was Lucas. He got started straight away chopping steps for us as he went. At first it was pretty ... read more
