Whilst I’ve been quoting from the top 101 things that Kiwis would like to do, I suppose you’ve all been wondering what #1 was. So were we - we were surprised the Glaciers weren’t higher, and we actually thought it might be something like watching the All Blacks lift the Rugby World Cup ... but no - nothing impossible like that ... #1 is actually Milford Sound and #2 is Doubtful Sound. Everyone has told us that Doubtful is better than Milford, so we plumped to visit there. And we weren’t disappointed! The trip started with an hour’s boat trip across Lake Manapouri where we would have to travel by bus to get to the Sound. First we stopped at One of New Zealand’s Greatest Engineering Achievements - the Manapouri Hydro-Electric Power Station. As early as ... read more

Koko keskusta on rakennettu toivottamaan turistit tervetulleiksi. Se tekee Uuden Seelannin suuremmista kaupungeista toistensa kaltaisia. Sen takia tykkään paljon enemmän pienistä paikkakunnista, jotka ovat tietenkin myös turistiry... read more

Hi just to update you on our travels we have travelled to Fiord Land and Southland the weather was very extreme here, lots of rain an annual rain fall of 7 metres in this region but the fascinating thing was all of the water falls you would expect to see just one or two but here we must of seen hundreds due to the heavy rain fall it was quite amazing. We took a cruise boat into Milford Sound it is really a Fiord because a sound is created by a river eroding a v shaped valley and then flooding with sea water, where as a Fiord is a u shaped valley crated by a glacier and flooded with sea water, at its deepest it was 300 meters deep and in one period of 24 hours ... read more

It had to be the best cup of tea ever. I was cold and wet, and the tea was hot and wet. What’s more it was made with real milk instead of the powdered stuff I carry with me, and l was drinking it in the warmth of a ship’s saloon. How I came to be aboard was thanks to the crew - in particular Carol, who’s the nature guide aboard the tourist vessel, “Fiordland Navigator” operated by Real Journeys. It was tied up at the wharf when I arrived at Deep Cove, Doubtful Sound. The crew were farewelling their overnight guests, and my timing couldn‘t have been better. As the bus pulled away, I swung in on the Beast of Burden and asked, “where‘s the coffee shop?” Cue Carol, who invited me aboard to have ... read more

(Day 701 on the road)After resting my tired bones from the nine-day hike I had just completed, it was finally time to pick up Suzanne from the airport in Queenstown. Suzanne and I have been very good friends ever since we met at university in Hong Kong many years ago, and it was great to see her again (we had last met up in Singapore some 12 months ago). She will be travelling with me here in New Zealand for the next two weeks, and we both have been looking forward to this for a while now. Suzanne's idea of fighting her jet lag (she flew in from San Francisco where she lives and works) was to haul herself off a bridge on a rope. Her choice fell on the Kawarau bridge bungee jump; while that ... read more

We had our lunch packed and were now ready for our day on Doubtful Sound and yes the sun was shining this time. We went with Real Journey Cruises which also included a tour of the Manapouri Power Station which was maybe an unnecessary stop for us but we tend to be up for anything and it is all actually quite interesting. Actually getting to Doubtful Sound is a bit of a process. It involved a bus drive to Manapouri as we were staying in Te Anau, then a boat ride on the Manapouri Lake to view the power station. We then had another bus ride down to catch the boat for our Doubtful Sound Cruise. Doubtful Sound is a lot bigger than Milford and maybe doubly beautiful. The expanse leaves you breathless and you end ... read more

So I wake up occasionally to the sound of rain on the camper and do pray that hopefully it will stop and continue to hope even on the drive to the port and as we walk through the rain to the terminal and even as we run onto the boat and even as we drink the complimentary coffee to warm ourselves up...oh well we resign ourselves to a rainy day on Milford Sound. Our Mitre Peak Cruise So we chose Mitre Peak because we had read reviews that it was a nicer small boat to the popular Real Journey's option and it truly was tiny in comparison to the big Real Journey's boat beside us. Our crew were very very friendly throughout and the Captain often wondered around the boat to chat with everyone. I was ... read more
