From Lake Tekapo we began moving towards the bottom of South Island. The scenery changing almost hour by hour from the snow capped mountains on the horizon to sand swept bays and forests as we moved further south. We visited the town of Oamaru, staying at the Empire Hotel - a Victorian Backpackers - but central and very friendly. Oamaru is a town of Victorian architecture and apparently often used in film making. We had our first siting of a yellow eyed Penguin here and seals basking in the early evening sunshine. They also do a brilliant strawberry cheesecake in the local Victorian bakery!! At Moeraki, we donned walking boots and trudged the millenium walk and then along the beach to see the Moeraki Boulders - quite where they came from and what they are we ... read more

... while travelling through New Zealand we saw heaps of signs advertising historic sites... but honestly most times my Grandma was more historic. None the less Dunedin and Oamaru provided outstanding historic buildings. Dunedin is famous for its Scottish influence. Even the name means Edinburgh in the Galic language. The railway station and the First Church are the most pretty ones among the buildings. The Station is meant to be one of the best examples for Railway Station Architecture in the southern hemisphere, built by the architect George Troup. Oh well, at least that's what our guide books tells us. One of Dunedin's major architects is Robert Lawson who's master piece is the First Church. For further details just take a look at the pictures. The highly recommended Octagon Square in the centre disappointed us, it ... read more

Yesterday we came back from Stewart Island and I am pleased to report that the crossing was much smoother. Still rough but definitely better. We then drove to Dunedin with a few photo stops along the way. Dunedin is a big student city and is supposed to be based on Edinburgh. The name Dunedin means Edinburgh in Celtic, apparently. My Scottish friend Elaine was very excited to be able to buy Irn Bru here. This morning we visited the Cadbury's factory and took the tour. It was really cool. Thay have so so many more brands than we get back home so we felt duty bound to try as many as possible (Michael - you'd be in heaven). Many of these flavours will never be sent overseas so we only have a few more days to ... read more

Hey all.. My mother has been at me again about my entry for Dunedin even though I only got here last night... Have to add in my pics from christchurch as well but havent quite figured how to get them on here yet. Christchurch was pretty boring actually. I think it would be really nice if it was by car as most of the sights are out of the city and when I say out of the city I mean OUT. Like 30 mins to 1 hour away. So roamed around a fair bit feeling like I was travelling in circles. Have definately worn in my boots though which is a good thing. Got burnt on sunday from sitting in the cathedral square for too long. They have heaps of street performers doing their stuff which ... read more

Hey Everyone, Sorry it has been so long since I have written so I have decided to update 2 times because a lots has gone on since I last posted. Well since I last wrote I spent a few more days settling in a bit more. I registered for my classes, or papers as they are called here, which was actually pretty hard work as I had to get signed off on each of them separately and had to walk all over campus to get the signatures. Seeing as I had no idea where anything was this took a good while but am now enrolled in Mäori Studies, Health Policy and Politics, Intro to Marketing, and a neurobiology course about aging in the brain… and I know my way around campus a bit better. After getting ... read more

Hey All! So life is pretty good here in Dunedin. After heading back from Te Anau and Milford Sounds we entered the crazy week of orientation…all about having a good time and meeting tons of people. Two of my roommates Holly and Scott arrived on Sunday night. It was awesome to get to meet them. Scott is my “kiwi host” and is awesome! He has totally made the transition here so easy. I have spent quite a bit of time hanging out with him and his friends who are all really cool. Holly is from just out side of Buffalo, NY. She is really sweet but is still pretty quite. Orientation week was pretty crazy, lots of activities all day long, free food, free stuff, and lots of going out. The study abroad office ran a ... read more

We left early Monday morning, after a great night of celebrating the "survival" of our bungy jumps, and so the long bus ride to the very south of the south island was quite ok. We all could use a bit of sleep, right? Michelle, from Perth- Australia, and I are the only ones from our previous bus that are heading south on the Bottom Bus. Since the Bottom Bus is a lot smaller, we get to know everyone farely well, and this trip today is really all about getting to Dunedin, the 'scottish" college town of the first University in New Zealand. On our way we stop at Clyde Dam, which is the largest dam in NZ, and is really quite impressive. It does not hold up to the Hoover Dam, but then again, only 1 ... read more

... read more

Had a bit of a lie in this morning did get going till around 9.30am, we are travelling about three hours to Dunedin today. We took a short detour to Nugget Point on the way which is famous for its seals. After an 8km drive along a dirt road and a 15 minute walk along the cliff face we arrived at the light house, at first we could see very little but after a while we began picking out seals basking in the sun and playing in the tidal pools. We could hear the pups squeaking and barking, it was unusual because there were three different species of seal including some really big Eliphant Seals which is why we went there. We stayed there much longer than we expected it was truly an amazing sight. On ... read more

Unfortunately we let someone else take our pictures off our camera and they screwed it up, so we lost another 200+ pictures again. So we don't have any pictures for this blog. So let this be a lesson always do it yourself. We left Marianne and Geoff's today and headed to Dunedin, which is on the East Coast. We took the Southern Scenic Route around the bottom of the South Island following the coast, round the Catlins. Our first stop along the way was Porpoise Bay, where the world's rarest dolphins reside, the Hector Dolphin. We couldn't see them clearly but we did see quite a few of them swimming around in the Bay. The next stop was to check out a fossilized forest. It was pretty neat, you could actually see the trees that used ... read more
