McFarmers Backpackers Jason had made it quite clear at the beginning of this trip that he wanted to go to the Otago Peninsula to see the New Zealand Fur Seals, Sea Lions and Penguins. So we set off on our 5hr trip from Te Anau (blog: ), passing through Invercargil to stop for lunch (Invercargil didn't look very exciting). After driving most of the way in bright sun, we saw the dark, low cloud on the horizon. Jason joked, "I bet that's where we're going!". As we drove through the outskirts of Dunedin and climbed Highcliff Road along the crest of the Peninsular we disappeared into fog and high winds. The sea fret hung over the Peninsular, making the narrow and twisty road an exciting journey as it wound its way through. At times we could ... read more

After another long bus ride we arrived in Dunedin. We were dropped off from our bus at Dunedin's spectacular train station that was built with the wealth of a gold rush. It is a very elaborate building and represents a lot of the architecture in Dunedin - old and heavy. After climbing up just about every stair in the city we arrived at our hostel. It was a cozy little place and the view from our room looked out over the city. The view and the fact we were located just up the hill from the Speights Brewery absolutely made up for the climb! Our main reason for visiting Dunedin was to see the abundant wildlife on the Otago Peninsula. We took a tour led by two biologists who were Otago experts. We saw some ... read more

Howdy! Right, there have been several blog entries of late, primarily due to the last 2 hostels we've been at having free internet (yes!). Have now left Dunedin, but not before enjoying St Patricks Day there, which was surprisingly unmessy. Having been at the hostel for a few days and getting to know folks there was ideal, as throughout saturday people congregated in the lounge with their beverage of choice and prepared for the evening's events. A good night out was had by all with no hellish hangovers and dancing it up in a converted church of all places. Organ still in tact with the DJ mixing it up in front of it (keep your 'God is a DJ' pun under your hat). We were more than ready to leave Dunedin (weather, a small cockroach and ... read more

Hi All I hope you're well. Since Queenstown the weather down south has taken a somewhat unfortunate spin, with muchos rain. Not ideal! However, things are brightening up (and apparently it's worse in the north island anyway). Since leaving Queenstown (and Mel and Ricky) we've visited a couple of lakes. Lake Te Anau (rain) and Lake Manapouri (snow). Prefered Lake Manapouri just because in the morning the mountains (bottom of the southern alps) were covered in crisp snow. Lovely Jubbly! We stayed at Possum Lodge in a tin-can of a room. The girls and I gathered round the one heater in the room wrapped in our duvets and played cards. An experience for sure! Travelled in one day from one side of the country to the other (in the rain) to Dunedin and civilisation (and rain). ... read more

Yesterday we tried to go see the sealions again but as we walked down the path and neared teh beach we were about 2 metres away from one lying across our pathway then we heard a rustle and a grrr and saw another 2 in the long grass we all shit ourselves and run away! (your not meant to go closer than 2o meters) We tried to go another way down what we thought was a pathway but soon realised this had been made by a sea lion when 1 poked its head outta the grass. Zelie shouted at as from afar 'dont mess with wild animals' and we all chuckled! so unfortunatley we didn't get much of a chance to se them. We then drove up to Dunedinwalked around for a while sent some e-mails ... read more

After the free beer, I went back to the hostel, and en route picked up a rugby shirt and free scarf to help me blend in at the rugby. Rugby was quite good fun- game wasn't very special, highlanders (my team hahaha) won by loads, although it was quite good fun watching the students (mostly the very not 18yrs old ones) get far too drunk. Back to hostel in preparation for big day of sightseeing the next day. First stop after breakfast in reall nice hostel that did free filter coffee (this made me happy) was the main street where they were having the world bagpiping championships. I found this a little bit strange, and got a headache after a while, so popped into famous coffee shop to read my book for a bit. Went ... read more

To the Otago peninsular following a sinuous road aright along the bayside (sharing the road with cyclists in some sort of triathlon which also included canoes) to the Royal Albatross colony. Declined paying the excessive fee to actually visit the colony and instead admired the superb coastal views including some frolicking fur seals and some spoonbills. We tried to spot the local penguins but these apparently return from fishing at sunset. The sea mist rolled in very quickly obscuring the bright sun. We the headed back into the sun at a lower altitude on what became an unsealed track to a potential walk site but this became too rough and sandy for the car so we headed back to the civilisation of the beach at St.Clair nearer the city of Dunedin - weather warm again ... read more

Hello one and all, we hope you are all in good health, and looking forward to the coming of summer and longer nights. Apologies for not getting this blog out sooner, but summer finally arrived in Dunedin in February and its just been too damn sunny and warm to spend our weekends sitting inside at a computer. So last time we blogged we were just back from a trip to Wanaka in Central Otago, which was one of the places we were thinking about moving for the winter. Well since then, we have decided to stay put here in Dunedin until about August. We decided it would be pretty expensive to move to a town like that, and it's a bit too 'touristy' to call home. We are pretty settled here in Dunedin and decided not ... read more

The City Dunedin is the second largest city in the South Island and is home to the very first NZ University. It is said to be a student town but since our arrival we hav'nt seen many students. I guess they must be on a break or locked away studying hard.... As soon as we arrived here from Wanaka we parked up in the city and explored as much as we could. Unfortunately it was a sunday and most places were closed, however we got a good bearing of the area, visted the tourist info office (thats our routine now, every village, town and city we visit, the first port of call is the tourist office) and got all the info we required. The Otago Penensula is home to the Royal Albatros, yellowed eyed penguin and ... read more
