Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen, Time for an update.......from the nice city of Dunedin!

So far we've had an absolute ball on our holiday. It's been so good that we haven't had time to get near a computer until now. Day 1 & 2 After flying into Christchurch on the 29th March we spent a busy day seeing some of the sights. After a long walk into town we hopped onto our bus which took us to the International Antartic Centre where we donned big jackets and found what it was like to experience a blizzard, with gale force winds at almost 90kms an hour and the temperrature at -8 degrees. We tried to get into the igloo for shelter, but everyone else had the same idea so we had to weather the storm with Jim in his shorts with no problems, except for a freezing nose. Whilst here ... read more

Route: Queenstown - Manapouri - Clifton - Invercargill - Slope Point - Tautuku - Pounawea - kaka point - Dunedin Miles: 270 Parenting: On the road parenting is extremely difficult. You have so little to bargain with, there is no naughty step and every run in with your child is in a public space, so you are always trying to avoid any hint of a tantrum, tears or screaming - especially on campsites where people expect a peaceful holiday. Most of the time the girls are great and they engage with anyone willing to have a chat or play with them - just for a change from us I am sure. But when things go wrong it is really challenging and fluffy bribery has become a daily mantra. The girls have also become very feral ... read more

Today was museum day. The plan had been to do a 2 hour city walk, but following a fatigue driven mutiny, we by-passed the walk and went straight to the museum - stopping briefly for a pair of flat whites at Starbucks. I digress here to say that I am increasingly unimpressed by Starbucks. The coffee seems bland in comparison to the espreesso I have had at other New Zealand venues. For example, the museum made an excellent flat white. Having invested myself in the Starbucks ritual, I will certainly finish visiting all the New Zealand South Island stores (only two more to go I think), but I can’t say that my quest will be as fulfilling. Can it be that the Starbucks buzz is wearing off? What will I do with all the mugs? We ... read more

After an acceptable breakfast at the B&B we headed out to pay a visit to the local Starbucks. Two flat whites and a suitable picture later (no Dunedin mugs though), we headed over to the Cadbury’s factory for a tour. As you can imagine, a tour of a chocolate factory cannot fail to delight anyone under the age of 13 and our children were no exception (Astrid was keen too). Unfortunately, as it was a holiday, the tour was somewhat abbreviated (the factory itself not being in operation). We were able to see the largest chocolate waterfall in action (a ton of chocolate is dropped about a 100 feet inside an old silo allowing small splashes of chocolate to rain down on the gathered crowd). After leaving the factory with a stash of chocolate (both free ... read more

Left Twizel listening to Free Fallin' on the radio, although with all NZ radio stations, the signal lasted about half a song. Back on H8 south heading for Dunedin. Drove through the same terrain as we did on the way to Twizel. Passed by a lake the colour of jade alongside the highway. Lots of people were taking advantage of the last day of the Easter long weekend and the clear blue sky. Every car and truck seemed to be towing a boat heading to one of the various launches along the lake. We reached Omarama where we were going to stop for a coffee but drove through instead and cut down to H83 that would take us to the coast and H1. I must mention that in all my years of road trips (over half ... read more

Greetings chaps! Back again so soon i hear you cry! Yes, yes we are. We would like to spread the joyous news that Queenstown has pipped Nelson to the post and been awarded the coveted prize of our favourite place in New Zealand (so far) To say it is stunning would be an understatement (again the pictures show this) We feel it is akin to a skiing resort it has such a lovely feel about it - which is quite apt, as, in winter, it is! We were both feeling a little homesick when we arrived on Tuesday so it cheered us mightily to wake up to gorgeous blue skies and the view from our hostel! We took the gondola ride up the mountain to some amazing views and an incredible display of willpower as ... read more

UntitledUntitled Hey All, Sorry it has been a bit since I last posted. Since my last posting of my crazy sky diving adventure I have remain feet firmly planted on the ground in Dunedin. I have spent the past two weeks actually doing the first assignments that I have had in New Zealand, which I suppose isn’t too bad as mid-semester break begins tomorrowJ. Thrown in the middle there was my 21st! That is right, as Erica put it, “ I am officially allowed to drink in a country I will not be in for the next three months”. Well I had quite the celebration. I had a really nice day and met up with my friend Jo from the camp I used to work at, who was down at Otago for her graduation from Otago’s ... read more

Lots of chat with randoms in our hostel last night - all part of travelling! Discovery Lodge is a good hostel, nice and central so not far to lug my bag to the bus stop this morning at 7am! Got the coach to Dunedin. Dunedin is Celtic for Edinburgh and that is definatly the vibe we got as soon as we arrived. A real scottish feel to this city. It is the second biggest city in the south island with a population of 100,000. We checked into our hostel, called Chalet Backpackers which is up what i thought was the steepest hill ever - little did i know! The lonely planet says the hostel is supposedly haunted, we were intrigued so booked it! Dunedin is home to Cadbury World, NZ. Being chocoholics, it was essential ... read more
