Last week was my first week of work. Things went really well. The people that I work with are nice and the restaurant is right next door to the hostel where I am staying. I work with a girl called Allison who is from Seattle and we have become instant friends. It is good to talk to someone else from the Northwest and, dare I say, from the US. Kiwis are very friendly, but cliquey so it takes a while to break down that barrier meaning, as of yet, I have very few Kiwi friends. Sunday was a beautiful day so after work Allison invited me to go to one of the beaches near Christchurch with her and her boyfriend Kevin (who also happens to be from Seattle). Seeing as I hadn't been out of the ... read more

We have made it to NZ and it is so quiet. There is hardly any traffic and I don't think I have seen a single motorbike! We got here on Friday lunchtime. Vicki and Jo were waiting to pick us up at the airport which was great. It took us ages to get through customs as we seemed to have most of the items that were on the 'must be declared' list. I had to take my shoes off so they could be cleaned as they were too muddy! Vicki and Jo have a unit (bungalow to us) so we stayed there. It was so nice not to be in a hotel. They cooked us a very nice dinner of roast chicken and veggies which made a very pleasant change from noodles! We spent the time ... read more

After The Asylum i headed into Dunedin, a moderately large city (by New Zealand standards), where i parted ways with the germans. We had a good night out on the town, after which they moved onto Christchurch. I chose to head out to the Otago Peninsular, an outcrop of land nextdoor to the city renowned for its wildlife. The plan was to check out some iccle blue penguins. However, the weather was kind of lame and my hostel about 10km away from where the penguins emerge nightly from the ocean after a hard day of bobbing around and catching fishy treats. So, unfortunately, i saw no penguins. I went on a very windy bikeride up to the top point of the peninsular, the only mainland nesting site for Albatross in the whole wide world. The site ... read more

We've arrived in our last country (New Zealand) of our around the world travels, making it number 13. We're in Christchurch and the moment and will be travelling around the south island for a couple of weeks and then up to the north island for a little over a week. There are tons of adventure activities to do, so we'll see what happens. For our last bit of time in Melbourne we stayed at Nat's (my friend from college) parents house for the weekend. On our way out there the train was delayed and we had to take a bus instead of the train for 4 stops because someone had jumped out of the tain and had been killed. We saw the body bag as we drove by on the bus...what an aweful sight! Apprarently this ... read more

Hi folks! yes we are still alive, sorry for the radio silence but I'll blame it on having too good a time and capricious internet connections... Well, last you heard of us we had just been dolphin swimming - great - but we have seen more of the great things NZ has! We then left for Christchurch to meet up with our friends Tim and Les in their beautiful new house in Redcliffs on the hills off the Banks Peninsula, the only non flat bit on the Canterbury Plain. tim and Les had left us their "Mu", ie their 4x4 and Scott had a great time driving it on the roads to Akaroa, a little village in the middle of the Banks Peninsula, which had been settled by ... the French at about the same time ... read more

So, the next country on the list and first stop Christchurch. We mostly slept for a few days because clearly we've been working really hard recently and I had a bit of a bad back which had been getting worse for some time and needed to lie down for a bit. Went to the doctor too and apparently my pain doesn't correspond to any muscle, nerve or joint so I guess next stop is the loony bin for phantom back problems. Anyway, it's a bit better for a rest and in the mean time we sorted ourselves out with a rental car for about £8 a day which doesn't seem too bad ( As shown in the photo - forgot to take any more interesting pics in Christchurch ).... read more

Being away from home during Thanksgiving isn't that bad, there are just certain things you miss. I missed family of course, but often it's the little things that you think about the most--for me this was pumpkin pie and green bean casserole. Two very American dishes that are had to replicate anywhere outside the US just because it's hard to get your hands on the right ingredients. My Thanksgiving went well. I saw the new Harry Potter movie and then cooked dinner for two English girls, Natalie and Catherine, that were staying in the hostel. Natalie works with me making beds and Catherine was some random person Natalie and I met while making beds who we invited to dinner. It was a unique Thanksgiving to say the least. Things are going much better than last week. ... read more

Today we didn’t head out until 9am - what a treat! First stop was The Coffee House for a yummy breakfast. Seeing a drink called “Spirulina - A New Zealand Favourite” on the menu, I had to order it. Turns out it’s green and made from seaweed, which may sound strange but was quite delicious - it was cold, sweet and fruity like a smoothie. Next we went to the nearby Arts Centre Market, a collection of outdoor stalls selling various crafts. We we ready for it to be cheesy stuff, but were very pleasantly surprised. It turns out that all products sold there must be made in New Zealand, which made for good quality and originality. You could buy everything from clothing to artwork to jewellery to dinnerware, much of it hand-crafted, all original and ... read more

Expect anything with a 6:00 a.m. arrival in Christchurch, New Zealand. The hotel clerk really did greet us in her teddy bear flannel PJs when we arrived at the hotel. Just one more charming aspect of this delightful city. It is spring here and the trees and flowers are beautiful. The weather has been unpredictable - sunny, hot, windy, rainy, cold, and as the Kiwis love to say "Fine!". The free intercity bus system is a great way to get around the city and see all the sights. The city is user friendly and very clean. The Santa Claus parade was last Sun. and seemed strange amidst all the spring flowers. Tomorrow, 11/28, we plan to attend the John Fogerty concert at their Convention Center Concert Hall. Last Wed, 11/23, we took the scenic train across ... read more

Since Gem's parents Pete & Gee left us on Sunday 6 Nov, we've had three weeks in the South Island and spent the time taking in the wildlife and doing some serious tramping. We drove down the coast from Christchurch and stopped at Oamuru for a night to see the famous penguin colony there. We were lucky to see a yellow-crested penguin on a beach first, then saw nearly 200 blue penguins waddle up the rocky shoreline and into the main colony. The penguins are quite small, very cute and hilarious in the way they tend to cautiously wobble up the beach, nervously checking around to see if the coast is clear. Then the screaming kids come out of the nests and hassle the poor parents that have been out fishing all day, it was very ... read more
