Day 75 We spent the day on the bus traveling to Christchurch!! We stopped for a breather at a couple of places including a view point of the other side of Mount Cook, New Zealand's biggest mountain, which is still some 1000 m short of where we were staying in Bolivia!! It was a spectacular view. We were picked up at 8 and arrived at 4. We looked around town and had a drink in a really cool bar.... read more

I'm sending this out to alert the new subscribers. People I've met while in NZ who have made my trip memorable. I haven't had a lonely moment since I've been here. New Zealanders and well as travelers from other countries have befriended me, helped me fix my bike, given me invaluable info on traveling by bike in NZ, fed me amazing food, told me stories of their travels and lives, and have been great company. Keith, the man who saved the day by removing the small spur from the hole for my pin on my BOB trailer also invited me to dinner at their house for a "traditional New Zealand meal". That ofcourse includes mutton (sheep meat). I spent the evening before last with him and his wife tasting new foods that are cooked in new ... read more

Kiakoura Well. I finished up a great stay at Kiakoura. The hostel I stayed in was pretty nice. For about $14 US I had a bunk with a pillow and comforter, shower, TV room, nice kitchen, a deck on the back with a nice view of the countryside, a swimming pool, a jacuzzi, and a Thai resteraunt. Oh and free pastries from the bakery next door at their closing. I went on an early morning whale watch and saw 4 giant Sperm whales. They are the largest of the whales and dive deeper than any other whale. They can dive up to 3000 meters. It was a beautiful day for a boat ride and whale watching. I was back by 10am. A quick stop and then I biked down to a seal colony at the end ... read more

Hello there and Happy New Year to you all, the avid readers of our fascinating travel blog! Hope you are all well and muchos congratulations to Simon and Mrs soon-to be-Tooth! Lush news! The theme for this entry is boozing UK-style with peeps from back home, with the result that, as we head into February, we are feeling just the same as we have at this time every year after the festive season and are vowing to 'dry out' and drink less. How successful we are remains to be seen! After Christmas in Auckland and relaxing with a few creature comforts, and with South America's dysentery a mere memory, we travelled to Wellington to meet up with Tim ( me mate from work) and the lovely Abi. Had a good New Year at an Irish bar ... read more

Within two hours of my arrival, I have collected my trusty new ride from Stu, who makes his livelihood fixing up junkers for online auctions. With bike bags mounted, I set off for the centre of Christchurch. Along the main drag, I stop in to visit a benevolent bike shop owner, who gave me an old set of toe-cages and fit them to my pedals. As he worked, we mused over the mountainous mastermind Tulio Campagnolo who invented bicycle gears amid the Dolomites. The final product: A souped-up trail blazer suitable for any grandma Unable to confirm any farmstays, I head towards Lyttleton, located on the northern shore of a majestically turquoise harbour. Two kilometres short of my destination, I reach the mouth of Lyttleton Tunnel which clearly sign-posts that no bicycles are allowed. A quick ... read more

We went from Franz Joseph through Arthurs Pass back to the East Coast of the South Island. The road follows the route of the train - it is supposed to be one of the great train journeys - however when we drove through the pass the weather was terrible. It was raining and foggy - so we didn't see much the first day. We stopped half way through overnight. The next day the weather was somewhat better - so we could see some of the scenery - it was very beautiful. After Arthurs Pass we went to Westport (actually we stayed in Hamner Springs overnight on the way). In Westport we went on a whitewater rafting trip. The rapids were quite strong - but there were plenty of gaps between them, so it wasn't continuous. The ... read more

With the time when myself and Elaine will seperate coming closer, i have had to make plans for what i am doing next. I had already got online and booked into to a hostel in Melbourne, but i have been up and down about the plans i am making for when i leave Melbourne. For several days i have been saying to myself that i will venture to Ayers Rock but i have held back from actually booking anything, but finally i have donwe it and though it feels a bit scary to be making solo plans it is also exciting and challenging, something which i think is important for me to keep doing. So tonight, while by myself i have booked a flight to Alice Springs on Monday the 23rd and a three day tour ... read more
