Within two hours of my arrival, I have collected my trusty new ride from Stu, who makes his livelihood fixing up junkers for online auctions. With bike bags mounted, I set off for the centre of Christchurch. Along the main drag, I stop in to visit a benevolent bike shop owner, who gave me an old set of toe-cages and fit them to my pedals. As he worked, we mused over the mountainous mastermind Tulio Campagnolo who invented bicycle gears amid the Dolomites. The final product: A souped-up trail blazer suitable for any grandma Unable to confirm any farmstays, I head towards Lyttleton, located on the northern shore of a majestically turquoise harbour.
