We've just returned the campervan and are looking forward to a warm night in a hostel in Christchurch before we head up north tomorrow. It's going to be a long 10 hour journey on the train to Picton then the ferry to Wellington. Thanks for all your lovely anniversary messages. We spent most of it on the luge in Queenstown (see photo) and in the evening Karl took me to a very fancy, non-backpacker restaurant, where we had our first champagne in 4 months. Couldn't believe they didn't kick us out for wearing trainers and holey clothes. Also spent the past few days at the amazing Milford Sound, Dunedin, Timaru and Wanaka, but haven't managed to find any snow deep enough to ski yet! Maybe up north.... ... read more

We drove back to Christchurch, stopping at Hanmer Springs for a night (enjoying an evening soak in fantastic geothermal hot water mineral pools) and taking a detour up through Arthur's Pass. In Christchurch, we've been seeing the sights we didn't see last time (botanic gardens, museum, art gallery, arts centre) and preparing for our trip up to North Island on Monday (train and ferry to Wellington). ... read more

After leaving the warm sunny weather of Sydney, I took a quick plane over the Tasman and luckily it was a clear day and saw the amazing mountain ranges of the South Island of New Zealand before landing and the weather change was quite a shock to me. It felt as if I was back in Ireland and immediately had to dig out my jumpers from the bottom of my bag that I had to all but forget about for the previous 3 months. To add to that, after walking around Christchurch and finally finding accomodation after 99% of the hostels were full due to a rugby game, I was amoken in the middle of the night by a great big hail storm that swept through the city and almost took out the hostel aswell! ... read more

Hi, its me again, with news just in from the south island of NZ. Have covered a lot of ground (surprise surprise) since the last one. A theme has emerged over the last week of 'record breakers' so this log is dedicated to the TV programme of the same name. Its worth mentioning that on my way down to Stewart Island, I went near a place called Geraldine which has the world's biggest jumper. Its BIG. However, I would also like to enter it in another category of world's worst jumper. There lots of embossed sheep emblazend onto a argyle background. Unfortunately I don't have a photo to express the awfulness of this extraordinary item of clothing. Anyway, yeah, I spent a couple of days in Dunedin, climbed the world's steepest street. Its VERY steep and chock ... read more

Hello loved ones! It's been a jammed packed week. Sorry I haven't written much. Been on the go and obviously having a bit of trouble with the whole uploading pictures nonsense. In Queenstown, I decided to burn all my photos on to a CD so we'll see how it goes in this episode entitled, "Can our hero post pictures on line in less than three hours." So stayed tuned. Same Bat-time, Same Bat-channel. All joking aside, I've really enjoyed myself this past week (and in retrospect, have had a brilliant time the whole way around). I was a little disappointed with my initial week on the Kiwi Experience. I'm pretty sure it stems from the one day we had stopped on a driveway/gravel parking lot and were given the option of panning for gold, playing paint ... read more

We had a very long drive to Christchurch, which probably took a lot of the life out of the van's engine, to meet one of Sarah's friends from her old job in London. It was great to stay with Alvin, Jenny and Alistair who were incredibly kind to us and helped us to finally sell the van - for $500 to a dodgy Egyptian bloke - through the fantastic Trademe auction site. We also spent a couple of days hanging around in the Backpackers' Car Market with 40 or so other hopeful sellers. We got a couple of test drives: one nervous German chap, and one slightly strange German chap (most people in New Zealand seemed to be German) but no buyer so we ended up listing the van on Trademe for $1. By the way, ... read more

Hi Folks... As you will have guessed there's been a break in the Travel Blog..this is due to various reasons, none of which are very interesting, so apologies, and here we go again.. We left the beautiful town of Queenstown and headed off to The Millford Sounds - a quick geological lesson - a 'Sound' is an area carved out by a river and a 'Fjord' is an area carved out by a moving glacier. Hence the name The Millford Sounds - although just to confuse you (and us) this region was actually carved by a glacier and therefore a Fjord, although the Kiwi's still decided to call them Sounds! Great hey! Again, without trying to understate it too much its simply a huge region of sheer faced cliffs and mountains with rivers, lakes and waterways ... read more

The end is nigh.......if the dreaded plane doesn't kill me. Can't thank my hosts enough, can't explain just how good an experience it's been but it has. Look forward to seeing UK readers (those who are nice anyway) soon, but it's a real annoyance that we couldn't all just move over here instead!! xxx... read more

Hello everyone! This is my life, honest and uncut…pretty dramatic, ay?! :-) For anyone who just stumbled upon this travel journal: I’m Sascha, I’m from Cologne, Germany and I’m currently studying in Christchurch, NZ. I decided to use this travel journal as a way of letting my family and friends be part of my exciting life and tantalising adventures that I have here! Since most of them are back in Germany I’ll be writing mostly in German…at least at first. Later, if I find the time, I might add translations to my journal entries. You can still enjoy the great pictures from the beautiful New Zealand scenery, if you like, though ;-) Soooo, jetzt aber mal auf Deutsch!!! Haaaallloooooo alle, herzlich willkommen auf der tollsten, informativsten, lustigsten Online Reiseberichtsseite der Welt, die die spannenden, aufregenden und ... read more
