5 to 7 March 2014 – Christchurch was our last destination on the 2-week trip to New Zealand. This is the third biggest city in the country. A few days before we arrived in the city, the snow was falling, then a storm hit the city and it caused a serious flood. We were lucky as the day when we arrived in the city, it had stopped raining and the sun was shining the next day. The outside temperature was 17oC. I was very excited to see Christchurch as it’s famous for its old buildings. The city has also become well known after the 7.1 richter earthquake in February 2011. I heard that many old buildings were damaged and I wanted to see how the city looked 3 years after this disaster. The first thing we ... read more

Flight from Gold Coast to Christchurch went fine. Arrived in Christchurch around 11.30pm. Getting through customs here was quick and easy - very streamlined - great work Christchurch! Much better than any experience we have had in USA. Free shuttle was waiting for us and took us straight to our overnight accommodation at the airport lodge motel. Great service and friendly staff. arranged for a wake up call at 6.30am tomorrow morning and organised for a taxi to pick us up and take us to Apollo to collect our motorhome at 7.30am. The motel is a self contained unit with a kitchenette, separate lounge room and a huge king size bed - very clean and tidy - no hesitation in recommending this place to anyone visiting Christchurch. I had read mixed reviews about this place but ... read more

We arrived in sunny Christchurch in the afternoon and checked into the YMCA hostel. We walked to the supermarket and there was still so much building work and roadworks going off even 3 years after the devastating earthquake hit. They reckon it will be another 20 years until Christchurch is fully completed which shows the type of damage an earthquake can have! Me and Freeman smashed a McDonalds whilst the girls bought supplies for dinner that evening. We rang our mate Pone who has lived in Christchurch for a year now helping with the construction works and he rocked up at our hostel pissed out his head and it was only about 6pm! Great first impression to the girls... The girls cooked dinner whilst us lads got a taxi to the liquor store to get the ... read more

Geo: -43.5316, 172.637I arrived at Christchurch airport late afternoon by New Zealand airlines, all my flights with NZ airlines have been great. I caught the super shuttle to YMCA hostel and we were 8 people in the shuttle and I got chatting with them, even the driver got friendly. He showed us some of the Earth quake damage in CCH and the beautiful cathedral which will cost huge amount to restore. I felt really sad with tears at the destruction so I did not have heart to take the pictures, there has been great loss and the community are really feeling the pinch. Some People were moving to suburbs, places are deserted in some areas and I do feel sorry for all the people there. I was last one to be dropped and I paid $24, ... read more

It was a dark and foggy night flying out of Wellington late on the 20th. So much fog that we almost didn't make it into Christchurch! But my pilot friends would have appreciated the approach and landing the Air NZ pilots made in what looked to me like zero-zero conditions! Reminded me of Sacramento's thick tule fog that rolls in during the winter nights. I only had the one day in Christchurch, much was spent in the every helpful i Site (NZ Information Center) booking the rest of my trip. My procrastination really cost me this trip. My ultimate goal is Mt. Cook and I had booked accommodation in the YHA Backpackers Accommodation for the next night but not the actual travel to get there from Christchurch. When I went to book a bus, the only ... read more

Geo: -43.5316, 172.637We arrived late, early evening at Acaroa, by the time we had driven all the way from Dunedin and negotiated the wiggly roads of the extinct volcanic crater of Acaroa to bring us down to Barry's Bay and on to our B&B. Our room, bathed in the evening sun, with a wonderful view of the bay and mountain ridge beyond was very splendid and Jane Cook, who ran the guest house single handed, a welcoming host. She had a life story to tell and was very happy to chat about the local area too, introducing us to other interesting guests, which all made this hgh end B&B memorable. Her breakfasts were a feast fit for a King and Queen, which she threw in as part of her story, having been employed by the Queen's ... read more

February 3, 4, 2014 Dunedin to Christchurch Monday we drove up the coast from Dunedin to Christchurch for an overnight stay prior to returning to Aukland for our connections to The Cook Islands. This is another beautiful drive with too many land and seascapes. We made some interesting stops and small treks to see a small penguin colony, some sea lions and some other interesting rock formations. More sheep !! As mentioned in a previous entry, the size of the dairy business here is amazing and must be a big part of the exports from here as well as the woo; and lamb business. We get back that day we lost on our way to New Zealand, crossing the international dateline, as we travel to The Cook islands. We leave Aukland on the 5th and arrive ... read more

February 2, 2014 Sunday morning our journey today took us on a 3 ½ hour drive from Queenstown to Dunedin on the south east coast. Also a very nice drive with more scenery, a couple of lower mountain passes and traveling through some beautiful fruit and wine producing areas. We spent the afternoon roaming around Dunedin and some relaxing at our hotel. There are a couple of ½ day train trips from here but we felt it would be more of the same for us scenery wise. They say that the train station here has more pictures taken of it than any other building in the southern hemisphere. It’s a beautiful building but who dreams up these stats ??? ( and who is counting here and in all the other countries in the Southern Hemisphere ) ... read more

We flew into Christchurch yesterday over some amazing views of the mountains. It was like looking down on a set from The Lord of the Rings with snow capped peaks and huge lakes. Today we went on a great open topped bus tour of Christchurch with an excellent guide who was not only informative but had us in stitches all the way round. It is only when you are here that you can appreciate the extent of the devastation caused by the recent earthquakes. Over 1600 buildings were either destroyed by the quakes or have had to be demolished because they are unsafe or the ground is now unsafe for them. There are still 60 to 70 still to be demolished but amongst all this there is a hive of rebuilding. Indeed the city is like ... read more
