Wildlife much improved.... Tui, Bellbird, Fantail, Pukeko, Weka, cormorants, garnets and even an Albatross! We drove from Picton via Nelson to Abel Tasman arriving in beautiful sunshine with calm seas. Next day we took a water taxi to walk a section of the coastal track. An uneventful taxi ride via a Cormorant colony and more nz fur seals to a stunning but deserted beach. The walk through the bush was really interesting, no noise but birds and the sea.... the wind was whipping up and some patchy showers but under the trees and tree ferns it didn't matter. Taxi ride back was more eventful but more of that next time. Wifi very patchy... this is attempt five or six to blog, so pics and more of our adventure next time...... read more

A Tale of Two Trips. One from Sumner to Dunedin and back, and after two days at home, Sumner to Nelson and back. WHY! The Dunedin trip was primarily to watch a three day soccer tournament that grandson Luca was participating in. The tournament was a great success for his team as they reached the finals, but unfortunately lost that game. Needless to say a big disappointment to Luca and his team, which dissipated once they realized how well they had done to reach that final game. While the games were going on, Ann managed to take Lola to the Dunedin Museum where they had a fun time - especially in the butterfly exhibit. There was also a visit to the Cadbury's Chocolate factory, with the obligatory bag of chocolate treats. After the tournament, Philip and ... read more

Another unique vacation day in New Zealand. I spent the day at Abel Tasman National Park. This is a unique park in that the main access to the coastal points of the park are via the water. You basically take a water taxi to one of several drop-off points, then select a point from which to return from scheduled routes. I followed The Falls River outing where I was dropped off at Torrent Bay, hiked to Bark Bay, and picked up for my return trip. I used Abel Tasman AquaTaxi which I found to be excellent. They even provide a pick-up service at your local isite. Once dropped off you are on your own until the pick-up. I hiked 7.7 km to Bark Bay. The initial taxi ride to the drop off was interesting as they ... read more

Following 22 days exploring the North Island, it is time to have a look at the South Island. Day 22 was spent merely driving to Wellington to await the ferry early the next morning. Today I caught the Interislander ferry; specifically the Kaitaki. This was another milestone in my journey as I was leaving the North Island behind. With Monday being a holiday in New Zealand it was a full ferry. The crossing lasts three and a half hours crossing the Cook Strait from Wellington in the North Island to Picton in the South Island. The last hour is quite scenic as the ferry pushes down Queen Charlotte Sound and passes numerous secluded bays, coves and inlets. Upon arrival at Picton, I had a 3 hour drive to Motueka, which I was using as a staging ... read more

R : We arrived in Mouteka at about 4:55pm and hadn't got a reservation for the water taxi the next day which is "essential" apparently. We decided not to call the lonely planet and leaflet's combined bluff and headed to I-site - New Zealand's national tourist information service which seems to have an office in any town that has more than a goat and two people. They booked us on the next mornings water taxi and we headed for our next Airbnb which was stunning. It was near Marahau - one of the gateway towns to Abel Tasman which can't be reached by road. It was basically a studio on the back of someone's house but it had a gorgeous deck overlooking the park and was magic with a glass of Pinot Gris we had picked ... read more

I did the Tongaroro Alpine crossing. It was like day 2 on the Inca Trail in Peru except here it was freezing, wet and the wind was clocked at 35 mph on the topside crater. The park pulled all camping permits so I was forced off the trail and back into the hostel. Which is good cause I was beat to shit. I ate 3,000 cals up there and still dropped weight. From the time I arrived in Tongariro the weather was like Seattle in December. Cold and soggy. But the people I was with were warm and funny so it was all good. A word on the Great Walks in New Zealand. On the internet you see these wonderful pictures of solo hikers plodding along some beautiful ridge with blue seas sparkling in the ... read more

Ça me paraissait tellement loin.. Une vague idée d'une île dans le pacifique vers l'Australie mais c'est tout. (en fait il y a deux îles principales) « Il est moins cher ... read more

We were treated to a fleeting visit through my old stomping ground Wellington on Monday night before catching the ferry to carry on our campervan travels in the South Island. We caught up with some of my friends with a few bottles of vino in the sunshine at my old workplace Foxglove. It was so good to see them, although the sun, wine and overexcitement obviously got too much for me as I had my legs in the air, dignity out the window, in abra kebabra (Rich and his bloody kebabs) by 9 o'clock post fainting episode. Awkward. I stuck to peppermint tea for the remainder of the evening and we chatted away at Taylor's till the wee ours of the morning. We headed to brunch at Ti kouka, a quirky little cafe on Willis Street, ... read more

5 months into the nz journey and i have yet to write about it until now. In truth i have not quite found the urge or the muse or the time or the patience to write an entry, let alone write consistently. It is not for lack of experience here, this country has treated me well and i feel very comfortable and settled in. I guess I've been figuring out why i am here? why did i come here in the first place? what in the world am i doing? For the first month or so my answer was: i did not know what else to do basically. I knew i was not fulfilled state side, as in i was not unhappy but i also was not authentically happy either. I also knew i promised myself ... read more
