Despite some more rain last night, the worst of it seemed to be behind us so we decided to drive to Marahua. This is basically the end of the road before you get to the Abel Tasman National Park. We decided that we would hike for about an hour. The weather held out and we had a nice hike. We checked out Porter's Bay and Tinline Bay before arriving at Coquille Bay. We stayed at Coquille Bay for a while. It was a nice sandy beach. Eventually, the kids had their shoes off and were wading in the frigid sea. Theo kept pushing the bounds of sound reason (imagine!). In order to keep some of his clothes dry for the hike back (we were a bit more than an hour into the park), he started peeling ... read more

Arriving by ferry to the South Island was a really nice trip. It just seemed to be different to the North Island, everything is just bigger. Our group was being split for a few days as we all couldn't fit on the bus. So some of us decided to gonig to Nelson for 2 nights and then meet up with the others and spend 2 nights in Abel Tasman. On the bus the drivers mentioned we'd struggle to find accomodation, so after calling and getting no where we asked if their was space to stay on and spend 4 nights in Abel Tasman instead, luckily their was just enough, result. Whilst we were driving around the winding roads the bus driver managed to clip one of the windows whislt over taking a truck. The window shattered ... read more

It was going to be a long drive up to Farewell spit so we started out fairly early. It was a bit overcast so we were hoping it would clear up so we could have a nice walk on the spit. The drive towards farwell spit went over the Takaka hills. When we got to the top of the first ‘hill’ we went up there were great views back down to Motueka and across to Nelson. There was some fabulous views out across to the oceans as well - again the photos just don’t do it justice!! Part of the drive heads along the coast of Golden Bay. This is actually a number of beaches and bays that make up the area of coastline. All the beaches are sandy and quite shallow so the tide goes ... read more

Well pretty amazing day today, just got back from a mammoth 12 hour trip. We got up at 6am to have some breakfast and to wait for the bus which would take us over to Kaiteriteri, at the outskirts of the Abel Tasman National Park (ATNP). It was quite a long ish drive, but the views were amazing as we wound our way round some very steep parts of the road. As always the driver was very informative and he told us how Nelson and the area around ATNP was very famous for goriwng and exporting apples and that they are expecting to export over 5 million tonnes this season. Yeah, this is one or two pips ! Once we arrived at the park, we were greeted by crew who work for Wilsons boats. They checked ... read more

Finally, it’s here. This is a trip we’ve been looking forward to for a long time. We booked our campsites months ago while we were still in China dreaming about New Zealand’s great outdoors. Having heard mixed reviews from other travellers about the tramping track, we decided to stick to the water/beaches and kayak it. We previously spent 5 days kayaking on the west coast of British Colombia and figured that would be just about the right amount of time. There are numerous kayak tour operators that offer guided trips out of Marahau and the surrounding area near the beginning of the park, but we instead went for a “freedom” hire which allowed us to go at our own pace. Kayaking comes with several benefits over tramping. First, space and weight are non-issues meaning that you ... read more

Wed 2nd 6am came pretty early this morning. We jumped on the ferry from Wellington to Picton on the south island. The fairy ride took about 3 hours but it went by fast. The fairy actually had a bar, live music, TVs, cafes, and movie theater. Once we arrived in Picton a small fishing village we got lunch fresh seafood and headed to Nelson. On our 4 hour drive through the mountains to Nelson we stopped at this glacier stream for a swim. There were cliffs to jump off and the water was so refreshing. Of course there had to be a 75ft bridge over the stream that was plastered with do not jump signs, stating people have died and injured themselves from jumping. So…..I climbed the fence over and braced for impact. I shouted for ... read more

So on Thursday I joined Debby & Justin in getting a water taxi from Marahau up to Te Pukatea (via Split Apple rock). From Te Pukatea we strolled up Pitt Head & down into Anchorage Bay where we met up with Cora & Sandra for lunch (they were on the days sailing trip & our lunch breaks coincided!) I had a horse trek booked for later so I set off before them along the 11km walk back to Marahau along the coast track. It was a lovely walk with stunning forest and beaches along the way. I finally saw some fantails & silvereyes (both birds by the way) as well as more bellbirds. I got back with enough time to grab a quick cup of tea before heading off for horse riding at 5pm. Four of ... read more

We started off by nearly missing the start of the trip due to a road accident on the road into Motueka, but luckily we made it, and caught the bus with the rest of the group to Marahau, and then the WaterTaxi to Onetahuti beach where we got kayaks, paddles, spraydecks, and cags for the wimpy people, and set off. I was in the front of our kayak, Andrew was steering in the back. We started off to Tonga Island at a very leisurely pace as the people there for just a half day were quite slow. Once there we paddled round the island, watching the seals and cormorants (shags), and stopping off on the far side for lolly cake - rocky road cake but made with sweets rather than raisins. Then we headed back to ... read more
