Tramping through many forests in the South Island is truly a sensory experience. The moment you enter the forest envelopes you in coolness. A constant dampness makes the forest floor spring with your every step. Surrounded by trees, ferns and mosses that have the feel of the age of the dinosaurs. The call of the bellbird make you feel as if you have heard the most beautiful and haunting birdsong in all the world. For these reasons we headed from the West Coast to Abel Tasman National Park. Our journey took us through Buller Gorge and into the town of Motueka. After a Sunday roast (that we have been craving since we left the UK) we car camped near the beach and tide-filled saltwater pools. The tides here change the shoreline dramatically. The tidal range isn't ... read more

... read more

Abel Tasman National Park, the highlight of my trip. I just LOVED this area!!! But first I'll tell how I got there! After leaving Wellington, I hopped the ferry to the south island. As I was getting on the ferry, I was stopped by a family and asked if I'd hang out with their two kids for the crossing. They were heading across to meet up with their uncle on the south island and it was the first time they'd been on a ferry and gone traveling without the parents. It was great hanging out with Rebecca and Jacob for the next three hours as we made our way from the north island to the south island. Once we arrived in Picton, we found their uncle and aunt who offered me a ride to Nelson, my ... read more

Into the new year now, so time for an update. We left Hanmer Springs after Christmas and headed for Nelson, (via Murchison). Our lovely adopted parents tucked us into the van and checked our seat belts…. Gave us slabs of cake wrapped in festive napkins for the journey and waved us off, videoing our departure…. We left our Santa and Rudolf in their care… and they duly promised to take them caravanning with them, always. We got t Nelson a day earlier than our campsite booking so decided to head towards French Pass….. The road was fantastic, I didn’t think the poor old van would make it. The roads were steep, narrow and winding, and I’d say, more scenic than the road to Milford Sound. We encountered many land slides onto the road and a few ... read more

We woke up early Christmas morning and got on the ferry from Wellington down to the south island. The Interislander ferry was practically a cruise ship complete with a movie room, restaurant, and bar, though their Bloody Mary's could use some work. It was smooth sailin' down to Picton where we picked up our rental car and headed west towards Abel Tasman National Park. We had the whole day to meander our way over and stopped at pretty scenic lookout points along the way. Everything was closed for the holiday, so it was a good thing we stopped at the supermarket in Wellington the night before. After checking into our Buena Vista Apartment in Marahau, we cooked up big bowls of pasta to load up on carbs for our big Boxing Day hike. Took us three ... read more

Well today we woke up planing to do the Abel tasman hike. I was going to camp half way and Niv and Danielle were going to meet me tomorrow at the end. Some how I ended up really hurting my back this Morning so just Niv and Danielle ended up doing the walk. They went halfway and then came back. I spent the day at the beach and looking for somewhere to stay for the night. I found a nice place with a hot tub so we stayed there and I spent the night in the tub. Still sore though!... read more
