Second day around Whangarei so I wanted to check out some of the beaches and coastal scenes of Whangarei Heads. So many things to see, so little time. First stop was Ocean Beach in the Bream Head Scenic Reserve. A wonderful, sandy beach worthy of exploring. Although quite warm by Canadian standards for this time of year (23 C), the beaches were empty. A lovely sunny day so I explored the beach from one end to the other and beyond. Then off on the narrow roads. I must say I am not a fan of the narrow, narrow roads of parts of New Zealand. At least one flat so far by over-compensating and rubbing my tyres against the non-existing shoulder (read rocks, boulders, any concrete impediment they can find!). But I digress! After 90 minutes at ... read more

Left Piha today for Whangerei, about a 2 hour drive if you know where your going. Arriving somewhat late, my first stop was the AH Reed Memorial Park which is a remnant of the kauri forests of times gone by. It features a "stunning" canopy walk where you can see the kauri trees, mighty trees, some more than 500 years old, and indeed look down at the foliage. This includes the unusual view of looking down at the many palm and other trees. A view from below tells why it is called the Canopy Walk. It is a casual stroll, often on a boardwalk, until the trail becomes steep as you reach Pukenui Falls. Too lazy to walk to Whangerei Falls (about 45 minutes one way), I drove and followed a loop walk where you can ... read more

Hi people! It's been a while since I've last posted, that's because I was incredibly busy. But now I am very happy to introduce you to one of my hopefully reliable travel companion and the reason why I was busy: Moana! According to the seller of Iranian origin there is absolutely nothing wrong with it and it's equipped with only the best breaks, camp belt, tyres, suspension and motor. Oh and naturally there is no overheat. I hope he's right, for the price of NZD 1200 I'd expect nothing less! So I'm happy that I have sorted out my way to get round. After a couple of nights in Auckland with a wonderful family who invited me to play a bit of family touch rugby and with whom I had the honor of watching the All ... read more

Well, last little stop in New Zealand, this time it's 46 hours Kiwi time... I didn't sleep a lot, but I did a lot! And most of it, with great weather... I landed just after 3pm, and took a rental car straight from the airport...to first enjoy the traffic jams Auckland had to offer. My destination today is Whangarei, 180km north of Auckland airport, but it took me a good one hour to do the first 30km in order to get on Highway One to the North. It's deep winter time, so the sun is down early, and by 6pm it is pitch black...and I was going to enjoy as much of the scenery of the North Island by day light as I could while driving. Made it to Whangarei just before 7pm. Time to stock ... read more

Well, if you have been following the adventures of Cap’n Doug and his trusty sidekick, Hakura, you will know that the motor broke down during the first 24 hours of the big trip to Tonga in 2013. You will also know that the decision had been made to fix the motor. So that was the story in the pervious blog. Have I tell you that the only constant in the universe is change? Well, no, oh then, it is. With Hakura safely back on the hard in the Riverside Drive Marina, Whangarei, and the parts ordered, you would think that it was only a matter of time and the engine would be fixed and Hakura would be relaunched. No such thing. This was forgetting the mischievous nature of the fates. Even though I had checked that ... read more

Have u heard about Abbey caves? There is a place near Whangerei where u can have a walk in caves with bees inside.U need a lamp in the dark to make your way through. Above u can discover many glow worms. They look like shining stars in the milky way. We visited three different caves. The first one is the biggest. At the end of the walk u can have a cold water beach. That was my absolute favourite. Now, my circulation is on the run.... Apart from marvellous glow worm I have seen some nice animals for the first time: -stick insect -eel -queen bee sourrounded by drones -bees performing a swinging dance... read more

We were up early on the 2ndAugust ready for the 8:50am shuttle bus which our hostel offered for free. Our flight wasn’t until 2pm, but the only times that they ran the bus was 8:50am or 1pm, and the latter would have been too late for us to check in, so it would have to be the early one! We were all checked out and waiting out the front by 8:45am and the bus showed up right on time. The traffic was quite bad, being rush hour and all, but we were soon at Cairns airport, way too early to check in of course! We found a seat to sit on for a while and eventually we saw them setting up the Air New Zealand check in desks, so we joined a few other people in ... read more
