Welcome back to Wellington. Got a bit of a shock as I'd only been in the hostel for about an hour when we had an earthquake. The epicentre was actually 60km down just south of Picton on the south Island, so quite a way away but the building definitely rocked! Te Papa, the museum in Wellington has 'quake-proof' foundations and they have a display where you can see how they work. It's pretty cool actually. I wonder if they intend to rebuild Christchurch on them, or perhaps they should just move the city a few kilometres? I thought about going to the theatre but got confused with the dates of when the show I fancied seeing was on. Ah well. Wellington is a bit of a sprawling city so just kept to the waterfront, as usual ... read more

Sinds deze late namiddag zijn we aangekomen in Wellington. Wellington is de hoofdstad van Nieuw-Zeeland en ligt op het Noordereiland. We hadden eigenlijk gisterenavond geboekt.

Same Shit - Different Topic I drove into Raglan, settled down at the bar at a hotel and soon after Katka and her surfer friend Noah joined me. They gave me a quick update on the town. It is about SURFING. Apparently I had stumbled into one of the premier surf spots in the world. A Swedish guy I met at the backpacker place I stayed at, told me that he had been dreaming about that place for 15 years and it seemed like he was almost offended when I told him that I don't surf. I understand him a bit. When I had just started diving on Pulau Weh a group of young Danes showed up. They had no intention (or not enough money) to dive and I couldn't help asking why the hell they ... read more

So the first week of the Kiwi Experience Funky Chicken bus tour has been awesome!! We've travelled all down the North Island and I feel like I'm finally seeing the real New Zealand, hills & sheep lol! Ok so our journey has been as follows: Auckland - Hot Water Beach - Waitomo - Rotorua - Lake Taupo - River Valley - Wellington Hot Water Beach: Well this place was was fun, it's just an average beach with a bit of a twist! At low tide if you dig in the sand at the right place you can dig yourself a hot pool! There's a hot spring that sits underneath the beach, and it's called Hot Water Beach for a reason as the spring water is boiling!! We also woke up at 5:30am the next morning as ... read more

Flying into Auckland on the 15th September feels like a lifetime ago right now, but I know I'll love remembering all the fun we've had since then for this blog, so here goes... We were thrilled to arrive in Auckland where they had DRINKING WATER in taps and HOT showers and SHOPS that sell stuff. Even the cold and wet weather couldn't dampen that kind of excitement. We swiftly met Kate Jeffery (the fourth member of our team) and hit the town in search of Irish paraphernalia for the big match on Saturday (Ireland v Australia obvs...). To get us in the mood we watched the All Blacks beat Japan at the Auckland 'Fanzone' - a huge area set up on a wharf with big screens and bars and fun all round. The day of the ... read more

No I am not coming home yet but a slice of home came here this past weekend for the Rugby World Cup. Thats right the United States Eagles, our very own Rugby team (which I did not know we had until this trip) came to Wellington to take on the Australians. Of course being Americans in New Zealand we had to support our country no matter how bad our team is, if your unfamiliar with rugby we are awful. The match was on Friday at 830pm. In true American style there was a pre-match BBQ at one of the flats on our street. We had everything from hot dogs and hamburgers to flip cup and dizzy izzy. Around 7ish me and my three friends headed down to the stadium by running and signing through the streets ... read more

Hey Everybody! While ya'll probably clicked on this blog thinking that you were going to read about a crazy night I had this past weekend where I drink to much alcohol maybe climbed a light pole to steal a official world cup flag and then blacked out and did not remember... I am sorry to inform you that is not what the title means. As some of you might know but most of you won't this past weekend was the opening of the Rugby World Cup here in New Zealand. Rugby World Cup to New Zealanders is like the Super Bowl, World Series, Stanley Cup, March Madness, and the Olympics rolled into one. Here in New Zealand there Rugby team is called the All Blacks. Now the All Blacks here are almost as important as god ... read more

This week was filled with trying new things and celebrations! Monday was a first my flat mate Katrine from Norway introduced me to a new Sport... Handball. I fell in love with it. I mix of soccer and basketball throw in some of its own rules and add a dash of contact and you have handball. I joined the practice for a two hour game and it was a fast pace game with no time to think so you must be quick on your feet. Since handball in a European sport mainly very few Americans and New Zealanders play so the team is looking for new people to join... so hello to their newest member =) I get to compete in a few games before leaving to come back and I am very excited. Wednesday was ... read more

So it has begun... Wellington on a Plate!!! This past weekend was the start of the Wellington food festival which takes place throughout the month of August. As I mentioned in a pervious blog I signed up to volunteer for BEERVANA, which is a two day beerfest with four, four hour long sessions. I volunteered for the Friday night session from 5-10. As a volunteer I had to work one session and then I got to attend a session for free with twenty free beer tokens. On Friday I walked down to Beervana which was being held in our Rugby stadium, with three of my friends. Upon arrival I got assigned to the Canterbury Bar. Before the doors opened at six all the bar tenders had to taste the beers that they would be handling, lucky ... read more
