Huntly - a town I tend to drive right through on my way to somewhere else. But they have an i-Site. Why?? I clearly needed to stop and check it out. Thank goodness I did. Okay, my visit reinforced that there isn't a huge amount to do in Huntly but the lovely lady behind the desk was very helpful, they had pamphlets for just about everywhere else in NZ, there is lovely artwork on the fence, a picnic area with the perfect view of the power station and I was directed to an attraction I didn't know existed. Yes, Huntly has something that is really worth visiting. http://huntly.co.nz/history/ The Huntly Coal Museum is tucked away on a back street so you need to know where you are going and look for the small signs. It is ... read more

The walk was alongside a very pretty Te Waihu valley which had the bluest river and pools we'd ever seen. Rock filtered spring water gave the water it's blueness and it sort of glowed when the sun shone on and reflected off the white sandy riverbed. Lots of dips were taken along the way and a great deal of laughter was had, especially when the grown ups got either in and out of the pools. Cas ventured (with many 'ooohs' and 'it's freezing') into one particularly deep blue pool and perched herself on a rock that sat just below the surface; I declared to the kids that it was the mermaid of Copenhagen come back to life. I'm not sure I'd ever heard Ed and Hat laugh so much as when I tried to pull Cas ... read more

We're we packed up and off by 9.00, heading West. We stopped in Te Ahora, translates to Mountains of Love, for food and to pack up a box to send home. We have spare stuff that we just don't need eg thermals, hats, bumbag, camera case, travel towels and head rests etc. All in all it was 8 kilos and a pretty large box. The travellers adage is 'pack your bags, then take half of it out and whatever you think you'll spend, you should double it. The adage is holding out so far. We pulled up at Karangahake Gorge and took off on a 'Windows Walk'. The area has a gold mining past and it was like walking the set of Indiana Jones and Janes Bond. Several large, and wobbly, suspension bridges took us across ... read more

We are greeted at the start of our tour aboard the dark green Hobbiton tour bus by our bus driver whose opening gambit is 'My name's Danny and I'm a terrible driver. It takes about an hour to get to Hobbiton, I usually sleep!'. And so the silliness continues with our hells angels look alike bus driver Danny. He tells us about the spelling of some place names with 'wh' being pronounced similarly to 'ph' as 'f' the best version of this being a place called Whuka Whuka! Who knows if it's true, Danny seems a bit of a leg puller. We find out that the farm used for the Hobbiton set was chosen after lots of flying over countryside to find the perfect mix of rolling hills with trees dotted about and views all round ... read more

Dopoldne sva si ogledala jezero Hamilton, okoli katerega so speljane številne sprehajalne poti. V bližnji kavarni sva si privoščila jutranjo kavo (kako čudno so naju gledali, ker na kapučinu nisva hotela vanilijevega, cimetovega in še kakšnega posipa). ... read more

Geo: -37.8096, 175.773Today's visit to Hobbiton was a massive disappointment - sure, the gorgeous rolling hills and the impossibly-cute Hobbit holes were pretty amazing, turning most of the visitors into a bunch of giggling school kids that were acting as if it was their first time at Disneyland. But no matter how unforgettable our visit to Hobbiton was, no matter how awesome the tour was, we just couldn't forget about one major flaw in our time here today - where the hell were the Hobbits??!?!! The timing of our stop in Hobbiton was horrible planning, as it turned out that this was when all the Hobbits make their annual pilgrimage up to Rivendell, for Middle Earths biggest, best, and longest rave! Nobody knows how to celebrate New Years Eve like Lord Elrond, who puts on a ... read more

Last week I ended up swimming three times on my own. I have looked into some of the Masters' swim teams in the area. There used to be a swim club in the summer in Cambridge, so really close, but the team has pretty much dissolved due to lack of pool availability. I contacted the Masters' swim team in Hamilton and heard back. It sounds like they have a pretty good setup and it has a yearly fee, but then the members are only charged for the actual days they swim. They invited me to come to a practice or two to check out if it's what I'm looking for. I also heard about a Masters' team in Te Awamutu at the pool where I swam twice last week. I heard back this week from them ... read more
