As you can imagine, after our triumphant trek over the Tongariro yesterday, none of us felt like doing anything too strenuous today. We celebrated our achievement last night with a couple of beers but it wasn't long before our eyelids felt as heavy as our legs and we retreated off to bed. This morning, we felt that a generous lie in was well deserved and it was midday before we really got going anywhere. It was our last day with the hire car so we decided to treat Lina to a bit of a tour all of that we've been enjoying since arriving in Taupo. We did manage to include one attarction that Glynn and I haven't seen yet - the Huka Falls. We were planning to do the 2 hour walk from town at some ... read more

Kia Ora! Finally found an internet cafe that allows us to upload pictures! Got here ok, the two 12 hour flights wern't that gruelling for Laura. For Henley, the first 12 hours he was sat next to an old man who had faaarrrr too many war stories and a captured audience (Henley) to tell them to... Laura put her headphones on and watched a few films and left him to endure the pain. The second 12 hours, we swapped seats so Hen got the window seat but also then got a child behind using his seat as a football. Any attempt at sleeping was ruined so he sat staring at the clouds for hours instead, Laura slept..for hours.... When we finally arrived at Auckland airport Henley was feeling sleep deprived and weird and Laura was not ... read more

So this morning's adventure began with The River Jet Thermal Safari!. About half an hour or so above Taupo, and easy to find, was the River Jet. I turned up, donned a long velcro plastic map and put on an attractive life belt, then about 9 of us got into this jet boat. We took a nice cruise up the river. There was some lovely vegetation to be seen (I feel like I'm beginning to repeat myself a lot now). There are hundreds of pine trees that the Government have planted. They're American ones and aparently grow to the same height in 25 years as they do in the States in about 50 years, as there is no snow and frost on the ground. Some of these are being cleared though, to make way for dairy ... read more

Hi People: here is my sky-dive story: I was in a good mood today, after 4 days in New Zealand, I had been re-united with my luggage! : I was going to Taupo to-do a sky-dive. As I settle into my seat on the coach to take me to Taupo and said sky-dive, I glance at a paper laying there on the seat next too me and especially the headlines of that morning's paper, . I grab the paper, but the bus driver fills' me in on the details!: it turns' out that the sky-diver/cameraman's 1st and 2nd chute's didn't open fully, other sky-divers could see he was in trouble and frantically went to aid him, but they couldn't! The now sticken sky-diver is knowing that his life is going to end starts to record his ... read more

Other than skydiving, one of the things that Taupo is famous for is the great Tongariro Crossing. The common room at Rainbow Lodge is full of exhausted trekkers (or trampers as the Kiwis like to call them) telling tales of extraordinary adventure and out-of-this world scenery. We had heard about the crossing back in Rotorua and we mentioned it to Lina, our Japanese friend when we were there. When we said we were hoping to do the crossing ourselves while we were staying in Taupo, she said she wanted to do it too and why didn't we all go together? An excellent idea indeed! The Tongariro Crossing is actually quite a distance away from Taupo and to get there you need transport. Glynn and I checked out a number of private shuttle buses that drop you ... read more

After spending far too long getting my car hire (bizarrely much cheaper to book at a counter in person that on the internet, I have found), I headed in to Taupo for lunch. Had a Dr. Juice drink (yep, that disgusting juice stuff I used ot make myself, mmm, lovely). The guy was Canadian and was quite impressed I didn't suggest he was American. However I was then quite put out when he accused me of being from Essex! (No offence to the Darbourn's...) I then headed above Taupo on a horse trek - no shire horses, but my horse, Willie, was sturdy enough after all ;) I have never been on a horse in my life, but you all know I love the cowboy thing, so it was about time. Got on my helmet and ... read more

I hung around the town, picking up some cheap jade on the beach, before sitting there are reading in the late morning. Was sunny, but very cold :( I also went to the iSite (Tourist Information) to tell them about Gordon Wells, the lecherous Just Jade Experience guy. I had been chatting at the B&B and they said they'd had girls come in from him who were scared, and the iSite said the same, and that they had even had to go in and rescue bags for people. Good to know they know about it. The iSite was great and I'll use them a bit more in the future. I love Hokitika. I will definitely be coming back here, and the West Coast in general, again. It's lush and gorgeous. I can imagine it being even ... read more
