Vores første rigtige tur her i New Zealand blev Tongariro Crossing, en vandretur pÃ¥ 6-7 timer henover 2 vulkaner beliggende i Tangariro National park. Turen er en af de ture man referere til hernede som en ”Great Walk” efter sigende den bedste 1 dages vandretur i hele New Zealand. Sekundært havde vulkanerne ogsÃ¥ indgÃ¥et i ”Lord of The Rings” filmene, i rollen som Mt.

I left Taupo feeling very happy and headed North for Tauranga to try and link up with the people I had met in Dunedin. Murphy’s law then came into play .I headed north for Tokora no problem then having driven 10,000 klms in Australia and 2500 klms in the South Island I took a wrong turning and ended in a National Park with no signs and found out later I was heading South instead of North ,ending up completely lost no idea where I was until Turangi came up .Turangi is at the extreme south of lake Taupo I had gone 150klms completely in the wrong direction .So 3 hours later I was back where I started in Taupo !!! I was gob smacked, as I still had a 3 hour trip to go to ... read more

Hello All When we last spoke we were about to start our coach trip with stray. This entry covers a few different places on our way down to Taupo in the North Island. First day we managed to get on the coach unlike some who were told it was full and simply had to stay another night in Auckland. So we were on our way out of Auckland or so we thought. Once on the motorway the coach appeared to be rocking. So much so that the police pulled us over and told our driver Morrie that it wasn't roadworthy. We got off at the next exit and sat in a BP for a couple of hours making ourselves at home reading the magazines without paying and getting to know other people on the bus. There's ... read more

Oikein hyvaa Ystavanpaivaa kaikille! Oikein kiintoisa paikka - yksi parhaista museoista, missa olen koskaan kaynyt. Wellingtonista tultiin sitten tanne Taupoon - tai Taupolle. Taupo on meinaan jarvi - tarkemmin ottaen kaldera - tulivuoren kraateri joka on veden tayttama. Taupon toisella puolella nakyy lumihuippuisia vuoria. Ihan kivat maisemat taallakin. Tanaan kaytiin ystavanpaivakavelylla Huka-putouksilla, jotka eivat niinkaan tehneet vaikutusta korkeudellaan (vahan yli 20 metria) kuin virtaavan veden maaralla (250 000 kuutiometria sekunnissa). Vesi joessa ja putouksissa on aivan uskom... read more

Ok, so i thought i was leaving on the Kiwi Bus this morning, but a glitch in the system, did not have me on the manifest, and since i stayed in a different hostel than most of the other travellers, the bus did not come by the Rainbow Lodge, and consequently left without me. But, since we are all pretty laid back around here, it was No Worries, Mate... and so i decided rather then taking the intercity bus to catch up with Kiwi, i should rather stay in Taupo another day and enjoy the great weather and cool town, and just hop on the bus tomorrow... which is exactly what i did... and since Taupo is the Skydiving capital of the North Island, and i thought it would be cool to see Lake Taupo (which ... read more

North of Taupo, bang in the middle of North Island, is a geothermal area known as Orakei Korako. Boiling mudpools, mineral-rich hot springs and dazzling, technicolour mineral displays abound. Nearby, Butcher's Pool is a natural hot pool ideal for a dip - if you can stand the heat and are not too worried about catching amoebic meningitis! Our very last evening in New Zealand is spent in Raglan, a small surfing community only a couple of hours away from the hustle and bustle of Auckland. We spend the night in a converted railway carriage before making our way to the airport - and a long, long trans-Pacific flight to California. The last leg of this epic journey begins. New Zealand will remain etched in our memories for ever - it won't be long before we're back. ... read more

Since i had such a good night sleep, i got up pretty early, put on the running shoes and went for a nice long jog along the coastal walkway that started right in front of our hostel. A pretty cool way to start the day... running on the boardwalk along the ocean front, greeting the few other early birds, and on the return settling into one of the cafes for a flat-white.... now that is a great morning! Since we headed back through the Hawke Valley today, we had to stop at all the culinary offerings... it started with a chocolate factory.... excellent (we had to sample, it of course then it was off the oldest Winery New Zealands, the Mission Winery, where we had to taste all the wines during our private tour of the ... read more

Spent a day in Taupo relaxing. We walked down to the lake in the morning and then walked to Huka Falls in the afternoon. This is about a 2 hr walk although it took us nearly an hour to reach the start point from the hostel. Worth it though and topped up my tan!... read more

The First job of the morning was to ring the flight centre. With every thing crossed I asked if it was all on and very happily the lady on the other end replied, YES!! Our pic up was very soon after that and that is probably when the nerves started to kick in. I had thought that it couldn't be any harder than a bungee and even though I was getting nervous I was still sure it wasn't going to be as bad as that however I was about to jump out of a perfectly good plane and that certainly, in my view, warranted a few butterflies. At the flight centre we were suited and botted in lovely red overalls and harnessed up (stress level going up form 3 to 5) here we met the ... read more

Taupo is only a short drive from Rotorua but we stopped a couple of times along the way, firstly at Waiotapu, where there is a great geyser (Lady Knox Geyser) that erupts once a day with a little assistance from some soap suds poured down the hole on top. We also discovered Kerosene lake which is the best hot spring and some amazing mud pools that were accessed for free and surpassed anything we had previously paid for. The rest of thermal park was pretty good as well, took a few hours to walk around but was well worth the effort. Next stop was Orakei Koraka which was rated highly by Lonely Planet, why I dont know, it was expensive and not as good as what we had seen earlier in the day, still it was ... read more
