Well you have to do something different on holiday! Some come to New Zealand to Bungy Jump but for me I could not eventually resist the lure of a trip in an Otter Seaplane from Lake Rotorua to view Mount Tarawera and the surrounding thermal area. This was a late afternoon, spur of the moment trip. We took off from Lake Rotorua just outside our hotel and flew SW over the Crater Lake District (rather like ours back home but volcanic in origin) towards the summit of Mt Tarawera. Enroute you could see along the whole line of the volcanic area out to the currently active White Island in the distance over which a plume of stream could be seen. On reaching Tarawera the explosion craters of the 1886 eruption could be seen and we flew ... read more

Rotorua is a lovely town and the restaurants and local wines and beers are first class. In the resturant tonight we conformed to one local custom which is to try a small sample of the locally brewed beers (one third of a litre of each, mind you!) just to have a taste of a selection. We will have no trouble sleeping tonight!... read more

Arrived in Auckalnd and spent a little time sorting out a new SIM card for my phone and a hire car. Stayed in Auckland overnight and decided to set off early in the morning. With my lovely little satnav to show me the way had was so on on my way to Rotorua which is about a three hour drive from Auckland. I just could not believe how quiet the roads were, it was very rural and a lot like the English countryside. Arrived in Rotorua and decided after a visit to the tourist information centre that I would visit the buried village of Te Wairoa. In 1886 a catastrophic eruption of nearby Mount Tarawera by destroyed a tourist village. Prior to the eruption people came from far and wide to bathe in the Pink and ... read more

Well we stayed in another AirBnB in Napier which is one of the Art Deco capitals of the world. The accommodation was you guessed it in someone's garden. If anyone out there has a garden shed they need looking after I am your man, ha ha. Well a bit about Napier for you. In Feb 1931 the whole town of Napier was destroyed by an earthquack and subsequent fire. However, from the ashes arose a magnificant Art Deco city, designed and built in 2 years in the Art Deco style as this was the style in 1931. There are a number of new building styles and a number of the old Art Deco buildings were pulled down until someone (cannot remember his name) said why are you pulling down these fantastic buildings they make Napier unique. ... read more

The internet connection that I have for the next week isn't all that great so I can't upload pictures to my blogs. I don't want to leave them all until I get home so I'll post the blogs without pictures and then add the pics in later. We arrived at the Maori tribal house, called a Murae (pronounced mer-eye), and everyone was extremely welcoming! They said some greeting prayers in Maori language and then welcomed each of us formally by shaking hands, touching noses and then touching foreheads. The Murae was a big square room with no furniture besides some chairs stacked in the corner and the carvings on the wall. We were given mattresses and pillows to set up here for the next couple nights. That’s right, 31 students, both professors, and their families were ... read more

A cloudy day, but off to Rotorua we go. Not a lot to say about that area as it is very commercial. A lot of tourist affiliated stuff which we do not like to do. The area we liked is called "The Redwoods" Huge redwood trees and pongo tree ferns underneath. Wr hiked (walked) about 2 hours enjoying these magnificent trees. Tomorrow we will start up the coromandel for a few days before coming back to Tauranga on thurs. We leave for the east coast of the north island on Friday. Here are some images from today. Ist ywar wirklich sehr tour... read more

A must visit is the thermal region of Wai-O-Tapu containing the Lady Knox geyser, mud pools and thermal springs. I was immediately suspicious when they advertised the geyser going off at 10.15am each day, only to have my suspicion confirmed when the guide admitted they induce the eruption by dousing it with a surfactant. It would however erupt spontainiously every 24-36 hours if left to it's own devices, although that would not be good for the tourists. We later walked through the park to view the thermal springs. This took us for 5 kilometers around footpaths and numerous steps but the views were spectacular and a photo opportunity around every corner. On our way back to Taupo where we stayed for 2 nights we called at the nearby Haka falls. Another great photo shot and this ... read more

The following events take place between October 25 and October 26 and are based on a true story. Our bus doesn't leave rotorua until about 4, so we wanted to do a bit of exploring around ole stink-town before we take our leave. Had the best sleep of entire trip in the beautiful YHA...I fully plan on staying at a YHA when we get to Sydney. We walked out to the lake front and then through the government gardens. Still smelly but strangely beautiful too. Like how the earth would look in prehistoric times. We have officially finished all of the candy that Natalie and Mike sent with us on the trip. God help us. We then walked to a few of the smaller geyser areas. Considered walking up to the place where they do zorbing ... read more

A bonus of this campground is that campers don’t have to wait for the hot pools to open up. Campers can access them any time in the morning. We took advantage of this and spent the morning relaxing in the wonderful thermal hot springs, enjoying pleasant surroundings, and no crowds. From there we went on to Wai-O-Tapu thermal wonderland. We were there in time to see the Lady Knox Geyser erupting. It was fun to watch but at the same time disappointing because the geyser doesn’t erupt naturally. The staff put some soap powder into it to get it to erupt at a set time each day. After watching the geyser we walked around the extensive grounds and viewed all the attractions; sinter terrace formations, volcanic craters, steaming ground and hot springs, all in a forest ... read more
