Now that I have got all the photos sorted from the previous blogs (sorry for any hassle, great blog site but it has the odd problem now and then!) I can keep going with this last blog. And include a couple of links for further info. Theres something about the last blog of a trip. It takes forever to write and publish. We're back at work now, busy catching up with what went on while we were away, getting the garden looking vaguely under control (doesnt help that its raining!)... So, anyway, back from where I left off last time... Friday 17th April 2009 Up early today. Not that we really woke up any earlier than usual, we were awake, and up, before the alarm went off, but we couldnt stay in bed for too long ... read more

Kaikora to Whakatane Hello from Whakatane (said Fa-ka-tarney)! Due to a gale force wind warning out at sea, we are stuck here for another night; more on that later. Back in February we decided we may as well at least go to Kaikora and see if we could afford some whale watching although, as it turned out, the weather made the decision for us. Rain means no helicopters, which means no spotting of whales which means boats have no clue where to go so they just don’t go. So that’s that. Instead we spied a couple of seals, ate some fantastic fresh fish from a roadside stall, played some mini golf, got freaked out by all the tourists and ate some fudge. Then we were off back up to Picton (that’s where the ferry to the ... read more

Well after leaving Thornton - there are no other words to describe it - we just bum about for a while. We head south along the coast to a place called Ohiwa and on our first day there - guess what? It p*sses it down again. We're developing a custom for rainy days - if it's raining when we wake up, we tend to go to the nearest town for an all day breakfast. Good custom eh? As we were driving through Whakatane, we stop at a place called Javaman and I had a pancake stack with bacon, banana and maple syrup - I tell you what, it was delicious and bacon and banana work a treat! Anyway, we get to the new campsite and Paul decides to check out the beach and the TV room ... read more

So after visitng the waterfall, we are absolutely soaked, the van smells damp, with nowhere to dry our clothes and it's still p**sing it down. We head to our next camp site sorely in need of showers and an undercover area to dry everything off. We park up and sit, in the pouring rain and wonder what to do first. After waterproofs, outside chairs and towels have been draped outside in the undercover area to dry, Paul goes to check out the kitchen area and shower block while I wait in the van. He comes back not impressed: "This place seems a bit of a dump", he tells me. Apparently, as we are near to some hot springs, the kitchen and shower block are riddled with flies. The kitchen has one of the electric blue tube ... read more

After taking the decision not to do the 10 hour round trip to Windy Wellington, we followed the sun up to Whatakane on the eastern side of the Bay Of Plenty. Abi held her nose as we drove through smelly Rotorua and as soon as we got into town, an hour later, not only did we spot where we were staying but found loads of shops to peruse in the spring sunshine. The Pacific Coast here is magnificent and my pics don’t do the beaches much justice. The name "Whakatane" pron: fa-kat-arnee commemorates an incident occurring after the arrival of the Mataatua Maori canoe. The men had gone ashore and the canoe began to drift. Wairaka, a chieftainess, said “Ka Whakatāne au i ahau” (“I will make myself a man”), and commenced to paddle (which women ... read more

We planned to do a bit of a road trip when we got back to New Zealand, visiting our friends and family in Whangarei, Rotorua, Whakatane, Napier and Wellington. But when our old boss heard we were coming home early, he offered us a few weeks of relief work back at 1XX - being flat broke, we couldn't say no! So less than a week after returning to the country, we headed back to the marvellous Eastern Bay on Sunday afternoon. We're staying in the cute, cuddly, cosy 1XX cottage in Ohope and so far it's been really lovely to catch up with people and meet the new ones, plus have a look at what's changed in four months! Not much, really, a couple of shops, plus the fence at our old house has been repaired ... read more

Day 4 Sorry no photos yet haven't been able to upload them. Today we woke up to sunshine and headed out to Hell's gate which is a natural thermal volcanic area. We walked round and saw all the bubbling mud, water and sulphur pools - it really smelt bad, rotten eggs!! Whilst there we indulged in a mud bath, the mud was from the thermal pools it was really soft and silky and we covered ourselves in it!! The lady then asked us to get out and follow her to the showers but what we didnt know was that they were freezing cold showers and our screams could be heard around the park!!! We then got into really hot sulphur pools temps of 38 and 40 and they looked out over the steaming scenery. It was ... read more

Wellington......started off ok. We got to our hostel, late at night after a long 3hour ferry trip with nothing better to do than eat the "not-so-nutritious" food on board because our heads were melted from driving all day & the poor TV selection was causing us more frustration than anything. Cabin fever. So it was with pleasure that we accepted the free upgrade to a private hotel room because someone else made a mistake.....we were more happy to oblige. Wasn´t as fun wandering around the city the next morning looking for our car though. Grace returned from the car meter, looking forlorn, unsure if Sunny was stolen or towed away. Apparently we parked in a clearway from 7-9am....wasn´t clearly sign-posted but it was a bit of a task trying to track the car down. Got it ... read more
