Wouldn't you know it, but I left the rear hatch not properly closed while cleaning the van last night and the battery is dead in the morning. Just one more stress that we don't need. I flagged a taxi and got a jump start. The Backpackers car market is a rather depressing place. We ended up parking the van in the same spot where it was when we first saw it, and set the price a bit lower than what we paid for it as a start. The global recession has started to hit the place (the owner says business is down 30 %) so things aren't looking up for a quick sale. After returning to the hostel we got the kids up (they obviously hadn't missed us) and spent the day hanging around the neighbourhood. ... read more

Sarah and i had had a long chat about us going all the way to the top, to 90 mile beach, which isn't actually 90 miles but is very long, but to get there you must go on a off road track full of pot holes and wondering sheep, and i had put up a big enough argument to insist that there was no way my car was going to make it on this road and i was not going to let her take my car without me being in it...so for the first time on the trip i won the argument and we didn't go, we just went up to a nice little town of Paihai where just over the water is Waitangi which is where the Maoirs and the British signed the contract of ... read more

Well, this weekend was an absolute blast!! Friday we met up with some of the guys and went to a cool bar called la zeppa that a friend was DJing at and you could see the whole city from the balcony. Then we went to one of the top 100 bars in the world called Crow Bar and saw one of the best bands I have seen in a while, Hot Grits. They were fantastic!!! Then, we went to Fu Bar again to hear some international DJs and danced till the wee hours of the morning. Saturday we drove to Devonport with Joseph and went through some tunnels through old volcanos!! Really nice! We then described to the pub bartenders what a bloody mary was and doctored them up and all sat down for a nice ... read more

Well, long time no see! I am back on the move..this time down under! I arrived in Auckland on thursday, and now it is saturday. I will try and update everyone every few days or so. The flight over from la was over 12 hours, but thank you to some sleeping pills i slept for 10 of the hours. When i arrived, Olivia had a bottle of champagne waiting for me (keep in mind it is 5am). We had some mimosas and then watched the sunrise before a stroll around the city and a traditional NZ breakfast of fried bananas and french toast with "bacon". After a nap we walked around the city some more before we got all gussied up and went out on the town. We went to a photography opening of a friends ... read more

This is the last entry, as we're back home now. Some of you may have noticed this. There's just a few tales of South Sea adventures and some pictures left to post before my well of traveling inspiration runneth dry. It's actually been quite difficult to get back into the frame of mind I was in while we were away, and so I've been putting this bit of writing off for weeks! But anyway, as I was saying in the last entry, we high tailed it out of LA to Rarotonga on the Sunday the 1st at about 11:30pm. The plane was less than half full and so this meant having the relative luxury of being able to stretch out on the 3 seats in the centre and have an almost useful sleep with my knees ... read more

The story begins of the first leg of my kiwi experience bus. It has its good and bad points. I've been to some really nice places and been given the chance to do loads of activities (budget whats that!!!lol). Also met loads of new people. On the down side i have about 8-10yrs on most of the others!!! Oh forgot to say what I got up to in Auckland before hopping on the bus! The main highlights were the Art museum and the Sky Tower. The museum was completely different to what I'd expected but good to see NZ artists' work. Not a very big place either, however I did just look around the new building as the main gallery was shut. Sky tower was fab. I went up it late afternoon so I could see ... read more
