After leaving Hastings the skies opened and revealed a rather concerning leak in the back door of Big Blue! Boo! First day back on the road and we had a soggy bed. We were headed up the Eastern Coast of the North Island in search of surf and a bit of true Maori culture on the East Cape. The East Cape is one of the few places where they did not sell (or were not forced to sell) their land to the European settelers. As such it has retained a definite Maori heritage. There are lots of Maraes which are the traditional meeting houses and have lots of spiritual significance. Very underpopulated area and beautifully rugged coast. We rounded the East Cape and into The Bay Of Plenty. Named by Captain Cook when he found the ... read more

We arrived in Auckland on Sunday evening and checked into our backpackers in Ponsonby. That evening we explored Ponsonby road and found a decent foodcourt for cheap and delicious Thai food. On Monday, we walked across Western Park (Verandahs Backpackers sits on the edge of this green space) and into the city's CBD for a spot of shopping and general information gathering. By evening, we had worked our way down to the harbour and ate greenlip mussels and seafood chowder for dinner in a waterside restaurant/bar. On Tuesday, we went to RockShop on K'Road - just to look at the Slash signature Les Paul Gibsons! Then, we headed out by car to explore some of the suburbs on the North Shore. We drove up to Torbay and then worked our way down to Devonport. Mainly, we ... read more

Flying into Christchurch was amazing in itself with fabulous views of the Southern Alps beneath us. This was going to be good. We only had 1 night in Christchurch when we first arrived as the next day we were bound for Methven in the Canterbury Plains where we stayed in a great YHA and woke up at 5am the next morning to go up in a hot air balloon! This was a wedding gift from Roger and Diane, and was absolutely brilliant! Thank to David's lucky round face (well, that's what he was told in India!) we had the perfect weather, a clear day with not a cloud in sight. It was absolutely breathtaking floating silently above a patchwork of fields with the Southern Alps and the snow covered top of Mount Cook in the distance. ... read more

Uenuku Lodge in Ponsonby became our home for the next two-three months as work was much needed to top up the accounts. Loads of fun was had, and we soon became part of the Furniture. I started a job at The Auckland District Courts working for the Bails Desk in the Criminal Section. Had some really fun days, and got to see a real inside to the Justice system. We also celebrated Anzac day in style with an Aussie and Kiwi themed fancy dress, which I came to as Vegemite. We had a few day trips out and the most memorable was Devonport, which has some amazing views from the top. Auckland was another chapter in the working life of Lorraine. To be honest, we couldn't wait to leave and get down South for the ski ... read more

Our plan now was to have four days in Auckland then fly out from there to the Cook Islands for about a week; we’d then return to NZ for a longer stay allowing time to discover it at a more leisurely pace. The flight into New Zealand provides a sneak preview of what you’re likely to encounter during your stay there. Down below, mountains and deep green forests stretch out for as far as you can see in all directions, interrupted only by rivers and lagoons but very little in terms of civilisation. It’s a country of many volcano’s (mostly dormant, thankfully) and its dramatic and varied landscape make it an ideal location for film production etc (The Lord of the Rings was filmed there for example). Based around the Manukau and Waitemata harbours, Auckland is ... read more

On a warm morning in Auckland we ventured out, through the Central Business District, by-passing the shopping Mecca that is Queen Street, past the Ferry Terminal to an area of poster plastered adult shops and fusty strip bars next to the docks. Our search for a place to call home for the next four months had brought us here. I have to say, that with the benefit of hindsight, it was an inauspicious beginning. We stood outside the building frowning at the number above the door. “Yup. This is it.” “Are you sure?” “I think so.” In my text message contact with Jane, she had omitted mention of any distinguishing features of the building that might aid us in locating it. Other potential landlords or flatmates we had contacted had been clear in letting us know ... read more

We have been spending our nights enjoying cheap wine, New Zealand beer and the Rugby World Cup. Games come on late on this side of the world (the first game usually starts around 12 a.m. and the last one sometime in the early morning). Here are a couple of Web sites that can get you caught up on our Rugby Nights: http://www.rugbyworldcup.com/ -- The Cup's Web Site http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_Blacks -- Info on our favorite team (like we had a choice) http://www.scrum.com/ -- a Web Site that has the best rugby news (and it might answer people's questions about this blog post's title)... read more

Carrying on the magic bus the route was: From South to North Island FerryWellingtonNapierLake TaupoMount MauganuiAuckland (where I fly to Fiji). Arrived onto the North Island by Ferry into New Zealands capital Wellington. Was a very picturesque ferry journey of about 4hrs from the south island to the North, arriving in the ferry port of Wellington near the city centre. Wellington was one of the few places in NZ that I had the luxury of staying for more than a night. Wellington Next day headed first "Te Papa" which is the Museum of New Zealand, this was an impressive museum with loads of interactive information and videos. Would have been easy to stay here for a whole day but after looking around the 6 floors for a couple of hours I headed out and onto Wellington's ... read more

It turns out that most of my blogs have been deleted by some travelblog server corruption or something like that. I am not alone though, apparently another 45,000 blogs have also been deleted. Nevermind anyway. Now only my 1st two blogs survive and then anything post travelblog apocolypto. A relatively good start to the cycle ride only curtailed by a few teething problems on the first day namely two flat tyres. It turned out that on the 1st day I ended up walking 20km and cycling only 10km! The 1st stop off was paihia and even though my bike had been giving me a bit of gip I was in relatively high spirits. It was good to be finally moving on from kerikeri even though it had served me well for the last however many months. ... read more
