Well, it's been a while since I've had a moment to sit down to update you on the working life in good old NZ...life has been pretty hectic since I arrived but I have been loving every moment.... "If I give you my credit card number for the deposit does that mean you're gonna charge the deposit to my credit card?" I sort of fell into my first job... Jo's fiance told me that the swimming school he teaches at had just lost their receptionist and so I phoned up and offered my services...I thought that I was going for an interview but when I arrived the owner said "I need someone who can do at least 20 hours a week, can you start tomorrow at 2?" Best interview ever!!!!! I worked there for 3 weeks ... read more

19th June 2006 Have just read over our Australian log and feel we missed out a lot. It would seem the “catch up” caught up with us. Our visit to Upwey and lunch with Edith and her family was lovely. We recognised one another immediately despite the thirty year gap. It was great for me to meet her family. Can’t believe I’d never met Graham. Like we said the views and countryside were stunning. We would have loved to have spent more time with them. The Whitsundays were truly beautiful, the sea an azure blue and the sand so white it dazzled. (Amazing how casual one can become). Snorkelling in the Great Barrier Reef was incredible. What a privilege to be able to see and touch giant turtles, nemos, Maori Wrasse…Katie is fast becoming an expert ... read more

Four of us are off to Ecuador to learn Spanish for 4 weeks. We leave Auckland on 22nd July, flying to Quito via Santiago. Rosemarie is already in Canada with her family, and we'll meet her in Quito (that sounds exciting). After spending the night in Quito, we'll be picked up by the owner of the Spanish school, Washington, who'll take us about 85 kms north to Otavalo, a small town of about 25,000 inhabitants, where his school is situated. We'll cross the equator on the way, but I don't think it'll be equator-like temperatures, because of the altitude (2800 m). Otavalo's main claim to fame is as having the best market in South America (!) - and we'll be there for 2 weeks! We'll be learning Spanish in the mornings, and hopefully doing some voluntary ... read more

Well I knew this day would roll around quickly, but not this quickly!! Following a wicked week of leaving parties including the official send off at the infamous Empire Tavern the weekend before, I seem to have very little time to complete many tasks which were considered 'essential' not that long ago. I not surprisingly found myself trying to jam everything into my already overweight suitcase minutes before I had to leave for the airport. Though, mum and dad didn’t seem to be panicking much. Somehow I managed to arrive at the airport before my traveling partner, Brendan. We checked in our bags and headed upstairs for the usual idle chit chat and coffee with those who were game enough to brave the Auckland Traffic. Before long, it was time to head through. I managed to ... read more

Our last few days in Fiji were really fun and relaxed. When we got to Nadi we got a really nice room which we deserved, we ate loads from being starved on the island for 3 weeks! Our flight to New Zealand was short, but we were sitting next to a really smelly old man who kept farting! New Zealand has been awesome since getting our tent through the biosecurity! Were staying in the city centre in a huge room with massive windows that we managed to get cheaper than an 8 bed dorm, so its only 7 pounds a nite! We spent out first day exploring the city and welcoming the rain after being in heat for so long! In the evening we watched rugby but felt really run down so decided to have a ... read more

Couple of apologies to make to start with: Apologies for my lack of attention to my blog. I'm now actually in New Zealand, but have been so busy catching up with my friends Karen & Stef (and daughter Rhionna) that I haven't got around to updating for a while. Anyway this will bring you all up to date (well up to arriving here in NZ) and I promise to pay more attention next time.... Secondly - there are no pics on this blog as it's just too painful to try and download them at the minute so there may be an extra load next time. And a couple of announcements: Happy Birthday for 3rd June to my sister Katie, and congratulations to Pete, Gemma and Joel for the arrival on 3rd June of baby Esme who ... read more

Well hello again people!!! !!! !!! I'm still alive and kicking. Just arrived in Auckland today and i'm heading north up to the Bay of Islands tomorrow. should be a good laugh. I've spent the last week in a place called Taupo. It's really nice and quiet, a great place to chill out and relax. i've got to know quite a few people there and i've been made to feel like family!!! What i got up to there was relaxing (of course), fishing (caught 2 trout about 40-50cm, don't know what lb though, but really nice for tea :p), walking (just round town and the river), and trying a 'little' bit of the night life, tee he. apart from that I've been helping out around the hostel with the bar and the BBQ and organising pool ... read more

We followed the signs for Auckland airport and soon made our way through the city. Being a Sunday probably helped. I dropped them off and for the first time in two months I was the only person in the car. To make life hard the Airport was at one end of the city and the hostel was at the other. Once I dropped my bags off at the hostel I then had to drive right across the city again to drop the car off. They seemed pleased that I got it back to them in one piece. That was that no more driving. 14,000km later I was back on my feet and don’t I know it. Once back in the city centre I took the lift up the Sky Tower to get some views. It was ... read more
