MOOREA We enter Opuhon Bay and anchor. To port, the Sheraton is in view. The towers of white smoke give us pause, but it seems that locals rake their leaves and burn them. Given the dry conditions, I’m surprised they still do it but they do. Hope the hotel is here tomorrow when we arrive for two nights. Our tour today is the shark sighting, ray feeding, and snorkeling adventure. We arrive to the site and a group of black tips swim by. The stingrays gather for a snack. The water is about three feet deep and we stand there petting the rays as they gather for food. They feel like plush velvet and seem to enjoy our caresses. They also like the food. Small reef fish gather for the crumbs and the sharks keep their ... read more

MOOREA - YET AGAIN After disembarkation and shopping in Pepeete for last minute necessities, we broad the Moorea Ferry for an hour trip to Moorea. The vessel is older and the trip takes an hour rather than the ½ hour by fast ferry but we’re in no hurry. A contingent of firemen from Moorea are returning home after fighting wild fires on Pepeete. Now they have fires to fight at home. Joe sits and reads while I look for photo ops and there on the top deck are a group of musicians. They obviously enjoy playing and singing together and provide an impromptu concert. So here I am, standing in the tropical sun, feeling a fresh breeze to cool me down and listening to great native music, all for the price of a ferry ride (thirteen ... read more

... read more

We spent 3 great days on the island of Moorea, a half hour ferry ride away from Tahiti. We had such a good time, with so many highlights. We did three tours, one each day. The first was a shark/ray watching tour. We took a boat out into the lagoon and jumped into the water (with masks and snorkels) and watched the sharks and other lagoon fish being fed. A bit scary, but amazing to see the sharks up so close. The second stop had us swimming among manta rays; we were assured they were safe, nothing like the one that killed Steve Irwin. Finally we stopped at a little island for lunch and an afternoon swimming in the warm tropical water before being delivered back to our hotel's pier. On day 2 we went dolphin ... read more

Tahiti: island of dreams I was so sick as we approached French Polynesia that I finally broke down and went to the sketchy boat doctor. He was more than happy to prescribe me a Japanese cocktail of strange drugs. I took them all 4 x a day and didn't get out of bed for 3 days. Finally Tahiti appeared before my eyes. A gorgeous lush tropical island, surrounded by crystal clear water, large mountains and deep mist. Looking at the gorgeous water, I was determined to dive no matter what! We went to a small island called Moorea and bunked into a garden chalet with 20 other friends from the ship. I raced off to dive that day and it was absolutely beautiful. Nearly kissed by a sea turtle, I danced with it over the ... read more

We awoke early as we do and went for another bread and jam breakfast, we had the company of an old French guy and a Polish professor who was interesting to talk too. At 8.30 Walter drove us to the wharf so we could catch our ferry to Moorea, the tickets cost about $14 each, the ferry was large, modern and very similar to those in the Greek Isles. The crossing took only about 30 minutes but that was more than long enough to cause Ruth some queasiness, on debarkation we decided to catch the local bus to our pension which took about 20 minutes. The trip was pleasant the island is beautiful and the weather good for the first time on the trip, unfortunately the driver didnt stop at the pension and after banging on ... read more

Today was the reason that our budget had been tight all week - we'd booked to do a whale and dolphin watching tour. Unfortunately the day didn’t start off great as I’d had really bad earache all night (I think I got some water trapped in it when snorkelling) and Matt was in pain with his leg as he’d hurt it yesterday. Luckily the trip wasn’t until lunchtime so we both took pain killers and lay on the beach reading our books until we felt a bit better. We were surprised to see that the trip was full of Australians and Americans. We’d been thinking that most tourists here were French, but actually it’s just that our hotel is French and many of the other (expensive big resort) hotels seem to be full of English speaking ... read more

This morning Matt demanded that we buy a coffee before having our bread and jam breakfast. I reminded him that the coffee tasted terrible here - so strong that you can almost chew it - but he still wanted to go, and I was missing caffeine so we went to the bar. The first couple of sips were satisfying, but then we had to load in the milk and sugar before we dared drink any more. By the time we’d both had a cup and a half we were practically buzzing. Sitting in the bar we had a perfect view out over the aqua water so then we just sat and watched the fish. After that we moved to the beach to carry on chatting about our plans when we get back home. The good thing ... read more

Another day started with bread and jam, then it was on to the beach to read our books. After a while we went out for a snorkel and tried out the underwater camera for the first time. Matt got some amazing shots. The current here was still strong so it was difficult to hold still when you wanted to watch a particular fish. Today some fish were really brave (or stupid) and came right up to us, even spending time sitting on Matt’s blue flipper while he had it on the floor to balance himself while taking some pictures. I think the angel fish are the most beautiful, but the little bright blue ones are pretty special too. We have to find a fish book from somewhere soon so that we know wha we're looking at! ... read more
