We rarely revisit a country we have been to again, unless it is on the way to somewhere else or is a hub for plane travel (Singapore, Hong Kong, Bangkok spring to mind in these categories). We first visited Australia three years ago, after being a bit ambivalent about it to be truthful, and we just loved it so how stupid were we for ignoring it for so long? On that occasion we travelled across the bottom right hand side, up the east coast and down to Alice Springs and Ayers Rock; on this occasion we thought we'd have a look at the west coast and the Outback expecting (and getting!) a completely different experience given the size of the country. We'd decided against hiring a satnav to go with our rental car. Our previous experience ... read more

The journey has finally begun. After one more nostalgic look around the home in Greenwood and saying good bye to the cousins Christie and Chris, we set off on our trip up the northwest coast of Western Australia. No rain in sight, just a beautiful blue sky and lots of excitement. We knew the first day was going to be fairly easy as our travel time to the first destination, Jurien Bay, was only a couple of hours away on the Indian Ocean Drive. This was probably a good thing, for we were towing our caravan for the first time and even the vehicle was having its first real test-our trusty Mitzubishi Challenger. We arrived about 1:30pm. The caravan park is situated right on the ocean with all facilities. These days they are more like resorts ... read more

Hi Folks, Not sure whether the first entry was published so am trying again. I have not used this before and therefore need to learn by trial and error. This is just to let you know that we will be leaving Monday week and all is in readiness. The caravan is packed and the car is fuelled. Our trusty German Shepherd is on high alert and sometimes leaping into the car and refusing to budge for fear of being left behind. First stop is Jurien Bay for some relaxation and fishing. Will keep you informed of any signicant catches. It will be wonderful to leave the metro area behind and not have to encounter the traffic snarls. Perfect bliss awaits.... read more

We decided to go for a road trip toJurienBaywhich is about 2.5 hours fromPerth. On the way we noticed a lot of sand dunes in the middle of the bush which looked really surreal and more like snow capped hills. We stopped off for information and a map when we got there then drove to Sandy Cove andDynamiteBaywhich were both gorgeous beaches further upIndian Ocean Drive. We stopped off for a sunbathe then carried on further up north where we followed a dirt track road to discover a (salt?) lake which was pretty vast but really shallow. Afterwards, we followed a very long and bumpy road toStockyardGullyCavewhich was a bit of a disappointment. We finally got there and there were warning signs about not disturbing the large feral bees. When we reached the cave we saw ... read more

Geo: -30.3042, 115.041Once again we've picked up a home on wheels and joined the campervan set in exploring Australia,- this time we'll be checking out the sights and sounds of Western Australia (which in Aussie is “WA”). The wild west of Australia isn't as well travelled as many other parts of the country due in no small measure to the distances involved and the expense incurred (if Australia is now one of the more expensive countries in the world than the worldwide epicentre of stupidly high prices is likely somewhere in WA). The campervan we picked up has seen better days and I'm not feeling the love we had with some of the other roadsters so for now she will be unnamed. We puttered north of Perth along the coastal highway and almost immediately started tracking ... read more

Marg decided that we had had enough of South Australia, so we pointed the car North West and made a run for the border. With the long and barren drive across the Nullarbor in front of us we decided to stock up on a few items in Ceduna bearing in mind that all fruit and vegetable matter (not cooked) and honey wouldhave to be forfeited at the border control. It was a very judicious shopping experience. It was a fairly long day’s driving and we elected to stop at a free camp about 90 kms West of Ceduna. It was on the wrong side of the road, but we were able to get a reasonable distance away from the highway so the road trains did not disturb us too much. There was another van already at ... read more

Jurien Bay & Sandy Cape 22rd & 23rd April 2012 Jurien Bay was named by Commodore Nicholas Baudin in 1801, honouring Charles Jurien of the French Navy administration who later became a Count. In the latter part of the last century wheat, wool, grain, bat manure (yes you read right!), manna gum and kangaroo, cattle and horse hides were shipped from the jetty. Jurien Bay later became a fishing port and more recently another centre for the WA Rock Lobster Industry, which is the towns’ biggest industry. The town is the largest along the coast and is very popular as a tourist destination these days. Protected by offshore reefs and islands (as many of these small coastal towns are along this stretch) and with great white sandy beaches make this a popular spot. The town itself ... read more

...was fortunately no Titanic. In fact, our trip to Leeman, about 30 kms north of Perth (population 620!), was quite uneventful, which was great! I drove while Paul took the opportunity to read to the boys (current book, Louis de Berniere’s Red Dog, a delightful true story about the adventures of a Red Cloud kelpie in the northern part of Western Australia). The four hour trip passed by quickly, though it did raise some concerns about our car’s fuel capacity / consumption (currently at 30l/100km - ouch! Ed.). We arrived at the caravan park, forewarned that campers can spot a newbie from miles away, who then gather around, stubbies in hand, to watch (not assist) the very likely frazzled newbies reverse their caravan and set up camp. Well, there were a couple of guys in one ... read more

We headed up the West Coast from Perth to our first stop, Jurien Bay and checked into a campsite a short stroll from the beach. In the morning I went for a run, first bit of cardio exercise in a long time. After following a small path along the edge of the beach for loads of, well several, erm a few, ok actually 3km!… I arrived at a small marina. As I collapsed in a heap, out of the corner of my eye I noticed something quite big move in the water. On closer inspection it turned out to be two dolphins. I watched them playing in the water for a while, was amazing to see them so close up but in the wild. Later, on my way out of the shower block I politely smiled ... read more
