Long distance Claaarraa
Or Pauuuulllla in this case (Pigeon Street anyone?) We headed up the West Coast from Perth to our first stop, Jurien Bay and checked into a campsite a short stroll from the beach. In the morning I went for a run, first bit of cardio exercise in a long time. After following a small path along the edge of the beach for loads of, well several, erm a few, ok actually 3km!… I arrived at a small marina. As I collapsed in a heap, out of the corner of my eye I noticed something quite big move in the water. On closer inspection it turned out to be two dolphins. I watched them playing in the water for a while, was amazing to see them so close up but in the wild.
Later, on my way out of the shower block I politely smiled and said ’hello’ to a woman that was entering as I was leaving - oh dear. She took this as a cue to fire various questions at me - where I was from, how long I’d been and was going to be in Oz, what route we were taking etc. Next thing I knew ’Lexy’ was at our campervan, pen and paper in hand
Strolling on beach - Xan
Along Jurien Bay Beachfront writing down her address, mobile and landline numbers, and drawing a map of how to get to her house from Christchurch Airport in New Zealand, insisting that we go and stay with her and her husband on our arrival there in 3 months time! While doing this Lexy also went into detail about how she has ’babywipe’ washes when they camp places without showers, way too much information and screwed her face up and asked how I‘d coped when I mentioned we‘d been in South East Asia for a while!
Obviously it was very kind of her to invite us to stay but something told me we weren’t exactly on the same wave length! To further establish this, on being dragged over to their campervan, his arms full of our washing, her husband greeted Xan with one of the most racist things he’s ever heard - basically it involved being sexually interfered with by an Aborigine. Xan was so shocked he nearly dropped the washing!
We quickly ensured the camper was in a ’lockdown’ state (for those of you not in the know camping lingo basically meaning nothing is going to fall, smash or fly open while we’re
Strolling on Beach - PMac
Jurien Bay Beachfront again - we were on the same beach you see driving) and got outta there!
After a couple of stops on the way at Hansen Bay Lookout and a walk round Lake Thetis we arrived at Nambung National Park, home of ‘The Pinnacles Desert’. Basically a huge area covered in thousands of Limestone pillars. The weather was perfect, cool but the sky was blue and the sun was shining creating amazing shadows. It really was stunning and only slightly marred by a girl standing on some of the smaller flatter ones (obviously a big no no) posing for photos in a meringue of wedding dress (also a big no no!) she was wearing over jeans and trainers!
