From Augusta we headed North (our 3rd time through this particular part of WA). Arrived at Busselton and after checking with very unhelpful Tourist Info staff found ourselves a basic cabin ($50 per night) on a campsite only 5mins from both the town centre and the beach. Bussleton's main attraction being the latter - it has a huge sandy beach sheltered from both the prevailing wind and the huge waves of the Indian Ocean so the only thing you have to worry about is jelly fish (and they even have nets up to protect part of the beach from them). First day there I discovered my camera wasn't working so took it to local camera shop where the owner (Nice helpful guy called Ken) informed me I had a virus on my memory card he directed ... read more

Thanks to the wonders of international air travel I can enjoy a swift breakfast in Bangkok, have lunch in Brunei, and be back at the hostel in Perth in time for dinner! The time spent on planes, trains and automobiles to get from A to B is often pretty mundane, and I've done it all so regularly now that a journey of over 4,000 miles in a day can be relatively painless. So I arrived back in Perth virtually penniless. Luckily there is plenty of work available for a backpacker in WA as long they aren't too fussy! I went to one of the many work agencies in central Perth and they sorted me out with a job straight away, pulling leaves off grape trees at a farm near Busselton. When I went to the grape ... read more

Holy crap it's been a long time since i updated this blog. I assure you that I'm not dead. Life is still good down here in Busselton. Summer has arrived full on. I took the liberty of checking the weather reports for edmonton. I know I shouldn't be rubbing it in, but the average day here at the moment is 27 degrees and sunny. The ocean is finally comfortably warm enough to swim in. There isn't too much new to report. The big news for the moment would be i now have a girlfriend who I'll be travelling with. Her name is Yumi (you-me) and as you can see she's a ridiculously cute japanese girl. The plan is to leave Busselton in 2 weeks and drive back up to perth. Yumi has to fly home for ... read more

Hey everyone. Just a quick update today with a few photos. I'm still in Busselton and still pruning all week. Not a whole lot to report. The big news is i did in fact buy a car. It's a 95 ford falcon with a massive rear end to store all the crap i may accumulate. It set me back 2000, but i believe i can resell it in a city for twice the amount. It also runs on both Petroleum(or gasoline to Canadians) and natural gas(lpg). The lpg gas is almost half the price and it lasts longer as well. That should be good for the long road trips. The Pruning job is going very well at the moment. If i can bring myself to work a full 5 day week I can earn more than ... read more

Ok, ok so you don't get many people in Australia singing along to this ozzy classic but we think it is important to realise that Australia lives up to many of its sterotypes, for example.. 1) It is very sunny, in fact it has only rained here once since we have been here, that's spectacular considering our track record. 2) There are kangaroos..everywhere particulalrly at dusk/dawn, which must be avoided at all costs especially when in a hire car with a scarily high insurance excess 3)...Ok so thats only two sterotypes but it will do for now, instead here is a little update about how things have been progressing down under: Since we spoke last we spent two days in sunny Port Douglas. This was most amusing especially as caught up with our new friends Andrew ... read more

It's been a little more than a year my emotional retirement from vineyard work in New Zealand. Tearing myself away from the viticulture industry has rendered me a shadow of my former self. That is why I am pleased to announce my triumphant return from retirement. I arrived in the small town of Busselton a couple of weeks ago. It is about 3 hours south of Perth. I'm playing it smart this time around and working before I am completely destitute, like what happened in New Zealand. This way I'm free to leave as soon as i get sick of my job. I'm working on a huge vineyard out of town by the coast. If you're ever deciding what kind of Australian wine to buy, be sure to pick up something produced at Bantry Bay. That ... read more

Arrived yesterday into Perth and were met by the friends we met in Thailand...Jackie & Dave! Was great to see them both. The following day we were up early and ready to go down to Busselton to the jetty there which is 2km long making it the longest in the southern hemisphere!! The beach there was really beautiful and the waters were crystal clear and probably the best we'd seen. We all walked right to the end where they had a natural underwater observatory which allowed you to walk 8m below sea level and was amazingly clear and colourful and full of so many different fish!! On the way back we made a few quick stops at the mad fish anf Gralyn winerys and then on to the chocolate and cheese factory for some samples! We ... read more

Felt I hadn't done Nannup justice. It was a very hot day but the town is lovely, set among the trees. The music has been great too. Folk music. Now its cooled off and I can think. As I said the response has been fabulous. Enthusiasm from everybody. One lady went into a long kind of ode to the flag, waxing lyrical on the features and telling of her childhood between the sea and the bush up near Hillarys. I was also told that the Womadelaide festival starts next Friday in Adelaide. Would be nice to be there but it seems like it would be too rushed. Hoping for cooler tomorrow.... read more

The regatta is over. We did well coming a respectable third overall and we won the Bill Lucas Night Race, the highlight of the regatta. It was a clear night with steady 16 knots of breeze on flat water, sailor's dream. And warm. Today gave out stickers in Busselton. Went well.Tomorrow on to Nannup where I hear there is a music festival. Might be fertile ground.... read more

Ditched flat in Cottesloe last Friday. Headed for Bunbury. Spruiked for three hours. Gave out 75 stickers. One guy said he couldn't get a sticker since he only had a dollar for lunch. I said how was that. He told me of "Shoestring Restaurant". Go after 12:30 when the crowd left. Went at 12:45. For my dollar got two sandwiches, cup of soup, doughnut and bottle of juice. There was a table stacked with bread which was free. Got four loaves since I was going sailing for a week in Busselton. Also a book from free shelf. Left loaded down. On way to car some woman waved me into Thai restaurant. Four women got stickers. Came out. A woman said it was her lucky day and got three. Later in the day I was at the ... read more
