This weekend we had a short break to Perth, catching up with family and taking in a little bit of culture. We drove to Perth via Mandurah, a once quaint seaside village, now a bustling metropolis devoid of any charm. Sadly, that is what happens to many such coastal retreats once developers move in. Despite the lack of charm, there are many lovely homes in the area, and the estuary is still very pretty. We have wanted to go to a Polish restaurant in Perth for a while, as Frank is of Polish ancestry, so Friday was our opportunity. Lucky we went, because it has changed hands and was closing two days later, to become yet another Indian restaurant. The food was good and so was the company, with special guests niece Renee and her two ... read more

We caught crabs. Not the sort you catch when you get too close and personal with the wrong sort of people. We caught blue swimmer crabs this morning using the skeletons of our King George whiting from yesterday and borrowed crab nets. We caught sixteen crabs of legal size. We probably caught another thirty undersized crabs but let them go. It was a lovely morning, sunny and still, so we joined the throngs on Busselton Jetty and tried our luck. We seemed to be the luckiest of the crab catchers today. And we had a great time. We proudly showed our catch when people asked. It is so much more fun when you are being successful. Frank had slightly less fun because he was nipped a couple of times. We went for a drive down to ... read more

Fish. Today was a fish day. This morning, after a leisurely breakfast, we went for a long walk along an even longer jetty. It was interesting to stop along the way to see what all the fisher people had caught. We were costed by a group of boys wanting to sell us some of their crabs. They were being offered to us at $2.50 each, which we declined. Frank said he would pay one dollar each, which the boys accepted, saying that if we bought ten, we could have twelve. What a salesman! We left the jetty without any. Apparently it is illegal for them to be selling crabs, because that would make them commercial fisherman. You live and learn. Further along we chatted with a woman and her elderly father. They were catching garfish and ... read more

The Margaret River region, south of Busselton is renowned for its wineries and coastal scenery. Today, with Christine and Richard as our tour guides, we went for a tour of the very expensive holiday homes in the coastal hamlets, spectacular coastline and several of the better-known wineries. At Saracen Winery and Duckstein Brewery, the boys tasted the brewed product, while Christine and I couldn’t resist the temptation of coffee and a shared piece of lime and tequila tart. Yummy. We are thinking we might go back for lunch in the next couple of days. Voyager Winery is something else. Built in 2001, in Cape Dutch style, Voyager has spectacular landscaped gardens with manicured lawns and beautiful rose gardens. We didn’t sample the wines because we were there late in the day, but I do recommend it ... read more

So, in my last entry I discussed amenities in caravan parks. One further comment before I move on. The amenities block in Horrocks Beach Caravan Park is visited by large green beetles at night. They are a very pretty shade of green, almost emerald, and about 3cm in length. In the morning they have departed, are dead or cleaned up. On our last morning, I was having a shower, when I felt something in my foot. Looking down, I was horrifed to see one of these beetles crawling across my foot. This makes for a very unpleasant showering experience. When it happened a second time, I decided that was the best message I could get to cut my shower short, and beat a hasty retreat. The amenities block at Horrocks Beach Caravan Park wins no stars ... read more

Tuesday 19th - we were still aware of the ant problem but felt helpless in that we had to leave the blocks to work and were encouraged not to take any other action as the blocks could fail to work if other repellants were used – difficult to resist when you can see the little things taking over the place!! Nevertheless, we resisted temptation and made our way to town to do some shopping. Traffic was busy but moved well so we were there and back in no time. Our purchases included another set of ant killing blocks in case the first set of four weren’t enough. Then it was time to make our way to the jetty again to be in time to catch the midday train for our tour in the underwater observatory. We ... read more

On Sunday morning (16th), at breakfast time, I reached into a cupboard for the jar of honey and my hand came out covered in tiny ants! We all experience the little blighters from time to time but I don’t like them in my cupboards. So everything had to come out of the cupboard and Graham eventually traced the real source of the problem which was underneath a storage area at the back of the caravan. Everything was pulled out of there too and we gave the area a good dose of repellant. But we weren’t convinced we’d solved the problem so, just along the road at a hardware store, we bought some poison blocks that hopefully will solve the problem in time – not too long I hope! We put the blocks down in various places ... read more
