hello :D I haven't had an overly exciting few days, more getting ready for my jaunt to alice springs and the famous red centre really!!! i can't believe that my flight is in the morning! it leaves melbourne at 8.35am, so i have to be at the airport by 7.30am, argh!! but nick is giving me a lift, so tis all ok! am amazingly grateful - don't have to get the bus at 6.00am like i had originally planned, phew! needless to say, much preparation (please read as shopping) has been done by myself. i've bought suntan lotion (ever the optimist!), bug spray and even a super cool hat (think cork hat, minus the corks, lol!). i even attempted to buy shorts but failed miserably and ended up buying short trousers - those who know me ... read more

Well, have spent a few days in Melbourne in the Australian state of Victoria. Flew from London with a couple of hours stopover in Singapore and then onto Melbourne. The journey was about 20 hours or so. Left London on a Tuesday night and got to Melbourne on a Thursday early in the morning. Needless to say was very tired. Day 0 Stayed with some relatives who were quite enthusiastic to drive me around different parts of Melbourne. On the day I got there they took me to a reservoir/park area with a view of the city in the background. Pretty cold and windy, especially compared to the northern hemisphere summer I had been experiencing in the northern hemisphere. Nevertheless it was a good way to stay up to help combat jet lag. In fact I ... read more

Greetings from Melbourne, well really from Kings Cross in Sydney as it's a week later but you ken what I mean. We arrived in Melbourne to drop auld Bertha off at the car hire place and after driving around the airport for ages we finally found the shop. I'll not go into details here (as it makes me dry retch even thinking about it) but needless to say emptying the chemical toilet wasn't the best thing we've done on the trip, actually it may have been the worse if it hadn't been for that night with the cockroaches, but that's another story.... Anyway Melbourne, a great place, well I though so, Fiona wasn't as keen. It reminded me of Glasgow (note/question to self: is there any place in the world that doesn't remind you of somewhere ... read more

(that and i tend to waffle...) boring stuff - flight was ok, really long though, totally didn't realise that a day is a loooooong time. especially sat down. on a plane. its so so cold here at the moment!! like, think england. in winter time. and because its winter here, its dark by 6, its strange!!! have been borrowing coats and scarves left right and centre, need to go shopping methinks... (any excuse!!) apparently wednesday was the coldest day that they've had in melbourne in 35 years!! they even had snow in some of the surrounding towns, ... read more

Spent a day back in Melbourne at Tom's house, doing some washing and basically sorting my stuff out ready for the east coast with Lucy. So camping clothes ditched and out come all those east coast party clothes!! NOT. Tom wasn't around unfortunately but it was great to see Nick again, who cooked me dinner, and we had a really nice chat and catch up.... read more

As soon as we had checked into our hostel, we went out exploring where we were and as we were only a block away from Queen Victoria Market we had to go shopping. Chrissie got a very good deal on a very nice jacket... In the afternoon we went to the Melbourne Gaol (my second jail in as many weeks) which is quite an eerie place. There is only one wing left and they have filled the cells with loads of information about the former tenants and very creepily with the death masks of the men and women who were hung there, including Ned Kelly. Alledgedly it is haunted, and the night tours and very scarey, but thankfully I was there in day light... We wandered down into town and watched the sunset over the city ... read more

Well what an exciting couple of days I've had. Been living some childhood dream. I'll start with Monday. Monday I went around the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) which is more a stadium it can hold 80,000 people (quite big). It's also where the Commonwealth Games are being held. Then I went to the Rod Laver Arena where the Aus Open tennis is held. Unfortunately when I went round it looked like any other stadium and had some chav kids with me. So after all that excitement didnt think anything else could beat it. But how wrong I was! In the evening at 6.30pm me and my friends (who I frog marched to the PC and told him to book a space!) left for St Kilda where an English pub called the Elephant and Wheelbarrow. This was ... read more

Somebody stole 2 hours because we woke at 9.30 realised we could have a lie in then woke at 11.30 when we had to be the other side of town at 11.45 for the Phillip Island tour! Power walked (very Harold Bishop esque) to Flinders St Station for 12.05, having missed the bus but getting there just as the neighbours bus pulled in. It was the lady who had given us the tour the day before and she phoned the office to get the bus to wait for us there while we caught a taxi over there. We're so lucky :) Finally got on the tour bus and met a couple from St Andrew's Uni who are going to Cambridge next year (they recognised Pete and Dave's splashtops) - her to do a PGCE (keep an ... read more

We couldn't decide whether to go to Kangaroo Island when we get to Adelaide or Phillip Island in Melbourne - both are full of all the wildlife we want to see but Phillip Island is smaller. Unfortunately tours of Kangaroo Island are all 2 days and just getting onto and off the island in a campervan is $140 and the park rangers who are meant to do tours were really unhelpful when I rang whereas a Phillip Island tour was done by the same people who do the Neighbours tour for $85. Having decided to do this though we found out we'd have to wait till Thurs 4th to do the tour. However, since we were planning to see the wineries in the Barossa valley near Adelaide we decided we could avoid wasting a day by ... read more
