Winter in Melbourne is excruciating. The football season is the only upside, but when you follow a team which has managed to win only twice in its past twenty five outings, that’s not much of an upside. We must escape. We decide to take a two week break in the sun in apparently beautiful Samoa. We’re not quite sure why based on previous experience. We went there in 1993 with Scott when he was only eighteen months old. It was the middle of the dry season, but it bucketed with rain for the entire time. Prior to that I went there by myself for four days in the early 1980’s before I met Issy. On that very memorable trip I ate some dodgy fish at an upmarket hotel on the night I arrived, and spent the ... read more

We arrive home, and we know it. Firstly, it's four degrees. Secondly, Coco has wrapped himself around Issy's neck, and is showing no signs of letting go anytime soon. It seems that he is leaving no stone unturned in his efforts to make sure that she doesn't leave him again. She tries to disentangle him so that she can go to the bathroom, but he is having none of it; he starts howling, so she takes him to the bathroom with her. Thirdly, as usual, our manic neighbour is using his insanely noisy leaf blower. I lean over the fence and politely enquire whether he thinks it's normal behaviour to use a leaf blower two or three times a day every day, including at 7am on Sunday mornings, and during hurricanes. The conversation doesn't end well. ... read more

After a short 4 hour flight into Melbourne, arriving at 23:00 local time (which was 1:00 in my biological clock), I was exhausted. I just wanted my bed, as soon as possible. However, I was quite happy that when I declared my muddy hiking boots, they cleaned them for me. Free of charge. I'd been too lazy to clean them after the past couple of hikes. When I got to my hostel, I first met Samantha: the girl that I had planned an 8-day road trip with - all the planning was done through text messages. We exchanged hello's but we were both tired and my bed was surprisingly comfortable for a hostel bed, so I was asleep within seconds. After a good night of sleep, Samantha and I headed into town. We visited a shopping ... read more

Back on the train for our return trip to Melbourne, headed for our second house sit. This one would be a short term stay, looking after some animals while their humans went to a weekend birthday celebration. The train ride was more crowded than the one going up to Wandiligong, people who seemed to be commuters coming into the city for business. The train rides have all been comfortable. They even have a little food kiosk where you can buy meals and drinks for your trip. We caught another train at Southern Cross Station that would take us to our final destination at Taylors Lakes. We had met up with the homeowners the previous week while we were watching the sheep at Hoppers Crossing to discuss feeding routines and general house rules while we were at ... read more

It was a long day travelling from Canberra to Melbourne, where we starting on a rather empty coach bus and then a pretty crowded intercity train. Kevin appreciated the chance to stretch out and nap during the bus ride, considering we were up and out pretty early. Our very lovely hosts greeted us in Melbourne at the expansive Southern Cross train station. They kept us entertained and informed as we timed our arrival to perfectly hit the rush hour traffic all the way to our first house sitting assignment in Oz. They have a one acre plot in a suburban neighborhood that they have converted to a makeshift wildlife sanctuary! Ducks, geese, chickens, sheep, and cats would be our companions for the next ten days, and it would be our responsibility to make sure they were ... read more

This time a week ago, we were under the impression that we would be on board a Royal Caribbean cruise ship, on our way to New Zealand. Then, the upsetting news came on Tuesday that our cruise had been cancelled. We were quite upset and unsure what to do. This was our honeymoon, we’d booked it months in advance and were already packed. We were just counting down the days. So, after a few tears and some helpful alternatives from our travel agent, we decided on a spontaneous plan B – Tasmania. In 12 hours, our wonderful travel agent used our refunded money from Royal Caribbean to plan an 8 day honeymoon travelling around Tasmania. This is a place neither of us have been, and to those of us all living on the mainland of Australia, ... read more

Today I am indulging two of my passions. I have been watching Neighbours for 30 years so a visit to Melbourne would not be complete without a Ramsey Street tour. Reviews are mixed so I have high hopes and low expectations. The package includes a meet and greet with a star of the show. I am intrigued to see who they have coaxed out of bed on a bank holiday morning. After a shaky start (the bus driver reversing into a street sign) it’s actually a really good tour. The clientele are exclusively British (the Aussies don’t watch Neighbours) and super excited. The driver/guide spends the 18 mile drive to the suburbs engaging in Neighbours themed banter. We start at the studio. Because there’s no filming taking place, we are allowed onto the set, which is ... read more

I wake to find the clocks went back in the night - a day after our arrival in Australia and a week after they went forward in the UK. In the past week, compared to the UK, we have been plus 13, 12, 10 and 9. By the time I get my head round this, we’ll be in Adelaide and plus 8.5. Once I have finished worrying about the time, and set off the fire alarm making some toast, we commence part 2 of our Melbourne sightseeing extravaganza. We start where we finished yesterday and walk in a huge zigzagging circle along the river, up Hosier street (famous for its street art), over the freaky William Barak bridge which talks and sings to you as you cross to the Olympic Park (home to various sports venues ... read more
