Well I left home on Saturday and after a very long and cramped 24 hours in the air (with an hour stop in Hong Kong, which looks great, am very excited to stop there on the way home!) touched down in Melbourne on Monday morning at 6.20am. And of course like many the traveller before me I arrived with all my preconceptions of a nation of beer swilling, crocodile wrestling, Neighbours loving beings - all of this can only be disproved to me over the next 8 weeks! As I made my way through the arrivals area I noticed the departures board and next to the status of planes about to leave was the message RELAX! Sarah was there to meet me after much arm twisting on my part. We made our way out to ... read more

Apparently this is the second most visited tourist attraction in Australia, after the Great Barrier Reef. The penguins are very cute and the drama they go through every night, is, well, dramatic, but it's not amazing. But who am I to disagree with the masses? They don't make their move until it's dark, so our tour took us around differnent areas of Philip Island, including an obligotory trip to a mini zoo. Suppose it's been a couple of months since I seen a 'roo! Couldn't take any photos at the pengiun parade, but saw a penguin in it's burrow at the Nobbies. ... read more

As I think I mentioned in my last blog, the plan for the next few weeks is to do a Melbourne tourist attraction each week. This week saw Chris and myself take a trip to Phillip Island a small island off the south coast of Victoria (Victoria is the state in-which Melbourne lies). Matt wasn’t really very interested in this particular adventure so and worked the previous night so we left him back at the ranch. In true Aussie tour style Chris and I went to see Matt at work the previous night (Sunday night) at Q-Bar, where funnily enough the whole Australian Big Brother house were hanging out after it’s recent final, drinking and being that kind of famous for being normal, nobodies that Big Brother is famous for. It’s nothing like in the UK ... read more

Today was an early flight in to Melbourne. The hotel is nice, Vibe, hehe, corny name. the best thing is that they have 24-hour internet, so I can try to catch up on updating the pics on the sight. Anyhow, first impression of Melbourne came as I decided to skip the rainy day walking around the city and join what I would normally call hell; a tour bus. The tour was to go to Phillip Island just about 80 miles from the city. The taxi ride to the bus was hilarious, and allowed me my first contrast to the nice, polite, Australian gentlemen that have taxied me from place to place. This time, a guy who I really have no idea where he came from, and smelled like he forgot to take a shower but had ... read more

The rain continued to fall all the way to Phillip Island. I was starting to get down heartened and was hoping that I had made the right decision to come to Phillip Island instead of heading straight for Melbourne. Phillip Island was definitely a fine weather destination. Luckily as if by magic as I went over the bridge that links the island to the mainland the clouds began to lift and the sun started to peak through. The hostel was again quiet although a German cyclist turned up quite late so I did have one person sharing the room, and oh my god he knew how to snore. Anyway before all that I headed off to watch the Phillip Island Penguins. Every night these Little Penguins (the smallest in the world) come ashore at the end ... read more

Arrival was fast and easy. Took the shuttle into town. Found my hotel ok but reservation didn't work out so I found a map and wandered downtown to tourist info and booked a REALLY great place, a historical hotel right in the heart of all the action. Sigh...it's great! So far I've wandered around town lots. Took the free circle tram around town a couple of times. Strolled down the many (really cool!) alley ways and arcades the city if famous for and stopped along the way for an espresso or two (which they are also famous for). Yesterday I joined a tour to Philip Island. This was fun! First we went to a sanctuary where I got to tickle a wombat (their feet are ticklish!), pet a wallaby, feed a kangaroo, and (no moleste but) ... read more

I dont know if I'd mentioned that I'd moved to another backpackers further down Grey st, 'All Nations', anyway it seemed really relaxed and I've got chatting to a couple of friendly girls: a German called Simone and an English Julia. We talked about our thoughts about seeing The Penguin Parade on Philip Island - a little tour that sounded amazing, especially since Penguins are my most fave animals and the thought of seeing 30 or so of them emerging from the water sounded wicked! Trouble is, we were all broke, but had spotted another guy in the hostel who had a car and thought we could do a DIY trip so managed to rope him into driving us all the way up there for the day! Well, we got there to find that it would ... read more

I was very excited to get up for 11am to be taken to Philip Island on my last full day in Australia. Lee, our tour guide was lovely and very chatty. It took him over an hour to collect him then we were on our way. On the way we stopped at Mura Wildlife Park, a center for injured, stray etc animals. We went straight to the wombats, fat brown badgers but very cute! We patted Molly when all she wanted to do was sleep! Me and Skinny had our photo taken with a koala but as Victoria have the biggest in Australia it is illegal to touch them. We had already had our photo taken with one in Australia zoo. We saw a rat being fed to a Tazmanian Devil and fed Wallabies, now i ... read more
