Today was something Ashleigh had been wanting to do for her last few visits to Melbourne, but never got the chance in the past - visit the Neighbours street and set. Well, today was the day. When we booked, the tour specifically said that it was a tour to the street only, with a bonus of getting photos with a past or present cast member. They only do set tours on the weekend, and we couldn't go, but we were aware of that when we booked. There is a specific building on Flinders St, dedicated to the Neighbours tour (as well as a few others the company does, but the sign advertises neighbours). We'd seen it a previous day by accident, so we knew where to go. It was still a near 30 minute walk from ... read more

So this blog is more for me, since currently I havne't given anyone the link ha because I suck at keeping a journal and can't keep track of everything via tumblr. They took the exchange students on a 3 day beach trip and it was pretty fun, we went surfing, played volleyball on the beach, got to meet some new ppl, biking (I ate shit btw, pictures to come) and got shitfaced. SO many ppl aren't able to handle their liquore it was a disaster. 2 guys almost got in a fight because the drunk white guy called the black guy the N word, girls puked everywhere, someone shit their pants? One girl had an asthma attack while puking, ppl hooked up with fat ugly old men... and yeah thats the like dramatic shit that happened ... read more

We were up bright and early on Monday and with instructions left for Bertie to feed Rosie the cat, we started on our long journey to Warwick. It took us a lot longer than we had anticipated getting out of Melbourne city suburbs but once we were on the Hume Highway we rattled off the kms. We had a short stop for coffee and cake in Seymour and then bashed on to Wangaratta where we had been invited to lunch at Wilma’s house. Wilma is an old friend of ours who we first met, with her husband Jack, in the queue for a car ferry in Dublin many years ago. A few years after that meeting we swapped campervans - they used ours in the UK for quite a few weeks while we had our first ... read more

The country woke up this morning with potentially a new government. The system in Aus is slightly different to the UK. It is compulsory to vote - failure to do so results in a fine. The polling stations are not open as long, closing at 6pm, which means that most of the results are known throughout the evening of polling day. It’s not just a single vote system either - all the candidates have to be voted for in order of preference and the secondary and subsequent votes are included in the overall assessment and often make a significant difference. It was a very close run contest and is likely to end up with a hung parliament, as has recently happened in the UK. It was a virtual dead heat between the two main parties so ... read more

We were all up bright and early for our day trip to Mansfield and, although it was cold, the sun was shining. We had turned “sat nav” on to guide us but we found that it was ‘Daph Nav’ who knew the best route out of the city. Melbourne is such a large and sprawling city and the leafy suburbs go on for a good many kilometers. After a while we realised we were no longer surrounded by houses and the outlook was much more rural and pleasant. It was becoming hilly and mainly farmland with cows, sheep and their lambs in abundance. We also passed an alpaca stud - they are such amusing creatures! There were a good many vineyards scattered through the countryside although the vines were bare at this time of year. Tempting ... read more

Well, we are slightly more “compus mensis” now. It was a bit of a struggle to stay awake during Sunday but we more or less managed it. Graham had arranged to collect the car and went off to Grant’s house courtesy of a lift with Bert in his works panel van via the local refuse disposal site. He’s a landscape gardener and had some garden waste to dispose of. As it happened, he came back with almost as much as he went with as some attractive cacti and succulents which someone else had disposed of caught his eye and proved too tempting! Graham successfully drove the car back and so was able to get to know it a bit. With the car came two full rucksacks and it was a bit like Christmas as we opened ... read more
