G'day folks. It was jumpers, coats, hats and gloves for our recent excursion! We have spent our first Winter here in Brisbane and I understand why the locals love it so much. Whilst it is very cool at night, down to 8 or 9 degrees, the day times are perfect at about 22 degrees. We truely haven't seen much in the way of clouds for a couple of months and certainly not seen much rain. We tend to have perfect blue skies which whilst they are not much while we are at work, they certainly make for play time at the weekends. So having spent much of winter in t-shirts and shorts, we decided to practice for our October holiday in the UK and head south to the cold climate of Tasmania. Here in Brisbane we ... read more

We have now left NSW and flew via Canberra to Launceston in Tasmania. Whilst it is a very pretty, no make that beautiful place technology is very behind the times so no internet so far. WE stayed in the Tamer Valley on a vineyard overlooking the valley. The apartment was very modern and open plan with huge windows but very industrial with lots of metal and concrete. Sunday was spent in Brians quest for the perfect Pinot Noir. The Tamer Valley has lots of great wineries and so we had a lot to sample and many great people to meet. What with fresh berries and great cheese how could things get better? On Monday we headed east via the beautiful heritage town of Ross. I really liked this town which is full of those magnificant soft ... read more

Well we have had a bit of news in the past few weeks. We are expecting a baby - all being well - on the 1st February 2008. We have had lots of tests and all seems well so far- though the doc is a little bit worried because I have high blood pressure - not VERY high but higher than it should be!! I am therefore being kept under close observation. We went to the hospital last Friday to be booked in. The baby will be born here - so will actually need an Aussie passport in order for us to bring him/her home to the UK. The appointment took about an hour longer than usual because Ivor chatted the socks off everyone we met (just for a change!!) The doctor I saw there was ... read more

On our way to the east coast, we took a down day in Launceston where we relaxed at Cataract Gorge Park for the afternoon. After our day on Cradle Mountain, simply walking to the park from the car was an experience! We needed a full day just to stretch out our muscles. We intended to do a good walk at Freycinet National Park the following day, but our plans were delayed due to rain, wind and nearly zero visibility. We relaxed with a couple of DVDs at our B&B and headed back to the park the following morning. Once again, our patience was rewarded with a sunny, blue sky. We trekked up to the Wineglass Bay lookout and had a beautiful view of a secluded white-sand beach (one of the top ten most beautiful beaches in ... read more

Like many other places we've ended up this year, Tasmania was never on our original itinerary. However, after spending several weeks in Bolivia and Peru with a couple from there, we decided it'd be silly not to pop over for a few days since we were in Melbourne anyway, only an hour away. Arriving midweek, our friends met us at the airport and dropped us off at Cataract Gorge, giving us the chance to take short walk from there back into town with a few hours to explore Launceston that afternoon, which is the third oldest city in Australia (after Sydney and Hobart). Given that our favourite Aussie beers actually come from Tassie, and the tastiest ones of all from Boags, based in Launceston, we thought it would be rude not to visit the brewery. Sadly ... read more

What a great couple of weeks we have had !! Last weekend, Marcus (best man) and Sharon came to stay for the weekend. Saturday, we went out around Hobart. We went to Salamanca Market and bought a sausage from one of the stalls. We walked around a bit, chatted lots in the glorious sunshine and then went to a friend’s house for a curry and some wine. Sunday, we went to help Jen with the house and children - as Andrew had a bit of an accident and was in hospital with a damaged leg. He is ok now but obviously it was difficult for Jen - and the children were sick. Whilst we were there, Ivor, Marcus and Sharon had great fun setting up a golf course on their land - Ivor has even become ... read more

Despite its name and being so far south, Tasmania is not the exotic place many believe it to be. The mainland Aussies actually regard it the way many Americans regard West Virginia. Basically the towns and cities (very small cities) look like the towns and cities in Ireland. The pastures with sheep look like Ireland too. The mountains, trees, lakes, etc are bigger though, more like the landscape of central PA or the Rockies in the US. Unlike the landscape of PA, the Rockie, and Ireland, there are incredible beaches in Tasmania that made me wish it were summer time so I could swim in the sea. The most beautiful beach was Wineglass Bay in Freycinet National Park. I will go back someday to swim at this beach. The water was crystal clear and blue, definitely ... read more

Tasmania was amazing, it has beautiful scenery absolutely everywhere. We were there for a week in total. We hired a car in Launceston and drove down the whole of the east coast, right down to the south east peninsular. From there we headed back up to Launceston via Cradle Mountain. We covered 845 miles in total and thankfully managed to get the car back in one piece. Tasmania is much like the Lake District but on a grand scale. Some of the scenery really has been breath taking. Rich has even said that some of the views are nearly as amazing as Ferryside...so they must be good! Along our journey we've seen waterfalls, caves, blow holes, the vast outback, beautiful white sand beaches, mountains, bizarre rock formations, forests and a gorge. It's coming up to the ... read more

Thanks to lawyers I felt my first real pangs of homesickness this last weekend. I don’t tell you this because its bad or really sad. Its just a matter of fact. I’m sure it won’t be the last time. But as Count Rugen (the man with 6 fingers on his right hand) said, “this is for posterity so be honest.” So the story: I went to Freycinet National Park with all intentions of some real alone time. I was going to rent a sea kayak and kayak down to the sound end of the peninsula and camp there by myself. Well when I got there I found out that the rental place wouldn’t rent to groups of one person… no matter how much they beg and plead. WHY? Because of Liability Insurance…. DAMN lawyers F!$ing everything ... read more
