Although Melbourne is a wonderful city, and more European than most places in Australia, we did not actually spend much time there. Following our visit to Healesville, the next day we went to the Mornington Peninsula (more on that later) and the the following day visited the Museum and then flew to Hobart, Tasmania. For some reason, even more than the rest of Australia, Tasmania has always seemed a particularly exotic destination to me. Not sure if it is the prison background, or the sordid aboriginal history, or the Tasmanian devils of cartoons, or perhaps the far southernly location, but Tasmania has always seemed the stuff of dreams. As it turns out, it is indeed that in some ways. With only two days to spend in Tassie, we elected to focus on two things: the beauty ... read more

We drove 60 or so Kms to the Ranger station at Freycinet then drove to the walks car park, which is a few Kms further south. We then set off onwards and upwards to the wineglass bay look out. On the way up we saw a pademelon jumping jobbo having a snack by the side of the trail. Then back the way to pick up the wineglass bay path to visit the stunning beach we had just seen. When we got there we did what any Britisher would have done. No, not name it on behalf of the Queen but go for a paddle. Warm clear sea? No, bloody cold. Following the path across to Hazzard bay where we had lunch. Then contour round the coastline back to the car park. A gorgeous sunny day at ... read more

After we replaced the alternator on the bus (the first of three major service / repair tasks which would continue each month until March), we had two trips up the East Coast during January. Mayfield was packed, with people, tents and vehicles looking like sardines in a tin so we just couldn't stay there. We continued on and parked on the side of the road. We had a great view (all to ourselves) of Great Oyster Bay until these two young Brits stopped to chat. We gave them directions down to the beach and heard of their plans travelling Australia. They were lovely to chat to. The next day we drove up to Freycinet and climbed the Wineglass Bay track to the lookout. As we were walking back down to the bus, we met the two ... read more

Sunday morning at St Helens was misty and wet, so we decided after looking at the weather maps to head south killing a day until the wet passed over this area before heading into Freycinet National Park. We wandered down the coast and then decided to head up to St Marys via Elephant Pass. Our impression was that the road rose steeply from the coast via a twisty road. The road came up through very pretty forest areas, and eventually came to a quaint little town on a plateau at the top of the pass. The hills were shrouded with mist, the rain we experienced earlier on the way south stayed away but the temps were coooool. The most exciting thing at St Marys was a trotter training on the track next to the free camp, ... read more

Tasmania is a truly remarkable, relatively undiscovered paradise. It has everything! Mountains, rivers, ocean, waterfalls, secluded beaches, unusual wildlife, amazing scenery, great hiking trails, awesome riding roads, incredible seafood, and more. Freycinet National Park is the crown jewel of the state. And of course, REAL Tasmanian Devils! This island has come a long way since originally settled as a penal colony for British convicts a couple of hundred years ago. Most of the original British convicts are now gone, as the last ship delivered them here in 1853 (don't quote me on that). Some seem to be still wandering around here though. Most of these photos were shot around the east coast of the island. This is really an incredibly unique corner of the world.... read more

Today we rented a car (don't rent from Budget, they're awful) and firstly, drove it up Mount Wellington. I hadn't driven for over a year but I was surprised at how naturally it came back! So naturally in fact that I kept trying to change gear in an automatic! The views all the way up the mountain were amazing although admittedly, I only really saw them in my wing mirror. When we arrived at the top, we could see for absolute miles. The city, the water, the harbours, the roads, the beaches. Well, this was definitely worth it! We parked up, got out of the car and were nearly blown away! I'd never felt wind as strong as that before, it actually moved me! And it was freezing. We took a stroll up to the summit ... read more

Day 2 - Freycinet National park After about 8 hours of sleep last night, we woke up at 5am the next morning for a scheduled sea kayaking tour at the Freycinet National park for 8:30am. The weather was so beautiful, clear sky but quite windy and chill. Freycinet is about 2 hours north of Hobart. We arrived at the tour office right at 8:30 only to find out that the tour was canceled due to high wind!! Argh, what a waste of our effort to get up early. We were a bit disappointed, but the wind was blowing strong! As much as we didn't want to hike, we went to get a trail map from the tourist information centre. Despite the strong sun, it was quite cold out there. From Coles Bay to Wineglass Bay lookouts, ... read more

DAY 121 Like yesterday the weather today is beautiful, we are up, ready and out by 10.30. I had l had helped Keith the guy over the way connect his Pajero up to his little van, then he towed it away sweet as a nut. Today we are going to Wine Glass Bay, dropping in to the visitors centre first to get a map of all the walks. Caroline was particularly interested in Wine glass bay as she had had a recommendation from a friend, who has been here that it was a must do. We were unsure of why it was called wine glass bay, but were soon to find out. The Visitor’s Centre today was busy with people, it is a bank holiday weekend so it seems that all of Tasmania plus lots of ... read more

DAY 120 Suddenly awake in the dead of the night, it was pitch black but there was no mistaking the sound of the patter of those tiny feet around the campsite and over the roof of the trailer tent, I heard a shuffle by the zipper and I could hear that familiar sound of the zip pulls clinking together. Sitting upright in bed, I grabbed the torch and flicked it around the tent, we were still all clear there were no Possums inside the tent, but I am sure they were trying the zipper. We have been told that some of them find that they can pull the zips open with such ease. After a short while the noise stopped, I turned off the torch and went back to sleep, determined that these critters were not ... read more
