January 16th was the National Day of Mourning for the victims of the Tsunami disaster. I spent the morning at Unley Park Baptist Church watching a brief powerpoint presentation that provided an opportunity for prayer and reflection over the events of December 26th. The Pastor entitled this sermon “When Disaster Strikes”. He reinforced humanity’s extended search for the meaning of life and God’s presence in our pain. Our longing for such truth reminds us that God sees the big picture even as He sees every individual person and every heartwrenching emotion. Often, we only see what is clearly evident, but He sees our pain individually, one by one. Not one is overlooked. Psalm 22 reinforces that pain is pain and that God gives us permission to be angry, disappointed and doubtful. It does not surprise Him ... read more

Today I am back in Adelaide and have been here since Wednesday. The rest of the group arrived in Adelaide Tuesday while Amber and I were away in Tasmania. Since my arrival back into the mainland we have been searching for living accomodations and this has proven to be an ongoing stress in our lives at the moment. Yes, we are residence of the Backpack Oz (a hostel) at least until tomorrow night. We have a couple of leads on apartments for *hire but have not had any such luck finding something both available and suitable for a short term lease. Kameron inquired with a rental agent, which is currently searching for us at a small fee. Although I feel confined to only the contents of my backpack from Tasmania I am finding some rest from ... read more

We arrived in Alice Springs, the centre of Australia and the middle of a desert, to be greeted by rain and a closed town as it was a bank holiday. Luckily the flying doctors station was open for a brief tour, as was the excellent reptile centre where all the local creepies, crawlies and slidies were kept. Ness particularly liked the python! Luckily, the following morning we got out of town and started a tour of the "local" (meaning within about 600km) sights. We first headed for the craggy, colourful features of Rainbow Valley. After a brief stop to meet the world famous Dinky the Singing Dingo, we drove to Kings Creek Station, a cattle station in the middle of nowhere, to spend the night sleeping under the stars on swags. The following morning after an ... read more

Arrived in Adelaide AUS on Thursday January 6, 2005 after about 20 hours of flying, airports etc…The girls and I, unbeknownst to us, had a pick-up arranged by Flinders University, the director of the Graduate Social Work Program’s daughter “Myf” picked us up from the airport and assisted us in finding accommodation. We ended up at the Plaza Hotel on Hindley St., in Adelaide’s red-light district which was as a tame a puppy dog. We spent two nights there and although amenities were far from the Plaza I’ve always wanted to stay in, the service was exceptional. The hotel staff, Gary in particular, could not have been more helpful and even came in with a grin when one of the girls clogged up the toilet, no worries! Staying awake the first night was a struggle, but ... read more

Since I have never found myself so far away from home, I have never attempted any sort of travel journal before now. I have hunch that we are all in for some version of the truth. That is, knowing how faithful I will be to sharing an accurate and timely account of my travel experiences as time progresses. I thought that it might be cool to include some of the Australia terminology I am learning on a daily basis along (i.e. Word Bank) with some differences I see in the country in comparison to my experience as an American (i.e. Culture Shock 101). The Travel Tips portion of my entry will include those instances I find myself thinking "I wish I would have known _____". So with that said, let the adventure begin... G'day Mates! New Year's Day 2005. 3 day weekend should not go to waste. Lil (my spontaneous-travel buddy) and I took advantage of cheap airfares to fly to Adelaide. Glenelg is a beachside suburb about 40 minutes from the Adelaide airport. We didn't do much research for accommodation but found a hotel about 10 minutes walk from the beach. A volleyball competition was going on while we were there. The white sandy beach is beautiful. Needless to say, we spent all our days at the beach. We did have a night out in the city but sadly, coming from Melbourne, Adelaide city really is very much smaller and quieter. Perhaps we went at a bad time - being New Year's, most shops were closed so we didn't get to see or do much in the city. The only ... read more

Howdy, So, this is my third group email. Quite convenient, yet quite impersonal, but, at least it's a way to let people know what i've been up to, if they're interested, which i hope you are, but you don't have to be, but it's better if you are, cuz then you'll enjoy reading the email, or maybe not. No pressure. So, i've finally left Melbourne after too long. I wanted to head west to Adelaide, and then to Perth. A dutch girl at my hostel heard me talking and wanted to do kind of the same thing. We looked into a few possibilities, ie train, rent a car, relocate a car, or rent a camper. The best deal was a camper. We rented a camper for 1 week. It could take 3 people, so to cut ... read more

GOR is truly spectacular - the yellow and red limestone has eroded into picturesque coves, bays and inlets, some with sheer cliffs and others with more gentle slopes. In places huge stacks rearing out of the ocean are the only remnants of former coast. Quite dramatic in evening loght and morning mist. Didn't realize how ancient this continent is - there has been much erosion over time. This whole coast is lashed by the very cold waters of the South Australian Bight - there's nothing between here and Antarctica. Inland from the coast are forested hilss separated by small valleys which are used for cattle and sheep raising - reminded us of the Yorkshire Dales and parts of Wales and Scotland. Still don't really feel we are in Australia. Probably would if we wewren't of British ... read more

After Coober Pedy it was a lot more of nothing to see until the Flinders Ranges. We drove a couple hundred km into the Ranges and spent 45 minutes hiking to a great lookout point only for it to start raining buckets just as we got up there... so in the end we didn't see much unfortunately. It was a nice drive at any rate. To redeem the day we drove to Alligator Gorge in Mount Remarkable National Park (I love that name) and did a really cool hike there. We spent the night in Port Germein which is a tiny little town who's claim to fame is that is has the longest wooden jetty in Australia. (Then I found out later that there's actually a longer one in Western Australia, so Port Germeinians are living ... read more
