We are wetter, colder but definitely wiser after our week in Burra. The town is a time capsule: late 1800s and early 1900s blue stone buildings dominate the town and surrounds and the streets are lined with old eucalyptus trees. There has also been little change to many of the shop fronts in the last 60-80 years. So how did we spend our week? The Burra heritage route took up some mornings and afternoons. There is a lot of history here; the mines, early commerce, smelting works and local agriculture. The Burra mine itself, originally an underground mine, was changed to open out cut in late 1870s, then re-opened briefly in the late 1900s. There is little left of the extensive stone buildings of the mine and the smelter; most ofthe stone has made its way ... read more

We left home at 6.30am and met Rhonda and Colin in Deniliquin ready to start our big first day. The morning weather was great but a north wind blew up around lunch time and blew us around a bit in the afternoon. The long trek to the SA border was broken up with a stop at Balranald for a quick cuppa and then a stop for fuel at Mildura. We were greeted by a dust storm at the SA border and then on to Renmark for a stop to do some fresh fruit & vegie shopping. We arrived in Burra to grey skys and the threat of rain, which hung off just long enough to get the campers set up and find the wine, bickies, cheese etc. The rain set in properly at about 5.30pm and ... read more

Friday 11th March and at last we said goodbye to Marion and Adelaide. We had Sat Nav on to help get us out of the city and I could see that it would take us towards Port Adelaide but Graham misunderstood one of the directions so we travelled closer to the city centre than we would have liked. However by the time we were on the road the morning rush hour had finished so although it was a bit ‘stop-start’ the journey through the city wasn’t too bad. Once out of the city the roads were good and we made excellent progress. We stopped in Tarlee for a tea break and, remembering the Marion CP receptionist’s very last words to us about planning ahead over the weekend, I phoned the CP in Clare where we were ... read more

Aus diesem Grund ... read more

I met my walking partner outside a small country pub in Manoora on the way to old Burra Rd at about 8am on what looked like a nice day. It was decided that I would leave my vehicle on The Old Burra Rd not far from the Morgan Whyalla pipeline and then we would drive from there to the start point on Worlds End Gorge Road. The walk started well, the country side was native bush and was pleasant with signs of native wildlife and birds visible as we followed the Burra Gorge Creek through the Hallelujah Hills. The time went by quickly as my co walker and I swapped our histories and stories about our lives, he seemed suprised at how well travelled I am and we were able to discuss the sights and shopping ... read more

Friday 21st May 2010 “All roads lead to Burra” says the brochure advertising the town and that's where we headed for today. The reason why we're headed that way is that Judy has family tree connections to some of the early settlers there. Copper was mined in this area in the mid 1800s and she is related to some of the Cornish miners who came here to work. At the entry to Kapunda we stopped at a display by the side of the road and read about the miners of the early days, continuing on to walk around an old mine on the edge of town. The Kapunda Information Centre has an interesting display of how life was in the past, the exhibition set up in the cellar of the building. This building also doubles ... read more
