Maxine on the road again

Maxine Robinson

I enjoy my holidays and love to travel in my own ways, and finding interesting things to do. Work keeps me very busy and doesn't give me anything-like enough time to tick the things off my very long travel list. My travel list has been growing for years so I had better get on with it and this blog looks like a good way to share my travels. Sometimes I travel by myself but sometimes members of my family and friends come with me. I look forward to sharing my experiences with others through my blog.

We are wetter, colder but definitely wiser after our week in Burra. The town is a time capsule: late 1800s and early 1900s blue stone buildings dominate the town and surrounds and the streets are lined with old eucalyptus trees. There has also been little change to many of the shop fronts in the last 60-80 years. So how did we spend our week? The Burra heritage route took up some mornings and afternoons. There is a lot of history here; the mines, early commerce, smelting works and local agriculture. The Burra mine itself, originally an underground mine, was changed to open out cut in late 1870s, then re-opened briefly in the late 1900s. There is little left of the extensive stone buildings of the mine and the smelter; most ofthe stone has made its way ... read more

Narrabri to Dubbo Mum and I stopped in Coonabarrabran for lunch after travelling through miles and miles of Pilliga Scrub. Mum didn't want to go to the "Pilliga Discovery Centre": she couldn't see how you couldn't find the scrub on your own! We visited the Diprotodon at Coonabarrabran - the largest megafauna found in Australia. We bypassed Gilgandra and went to Dubbo via Mendooran. The buildings there have murals on most of them so they are very colourfull. Going this was was good because it avoided a lot of the truck traffic along the Oxley and Newell Highways. We had a nice meal at the RSL in Dubbo. The motel was good with lots of room. Dubbo to Broken Hill Up and away early on a long day's drive to Broken Hill. The road was straight ... read more

Oceania August 3rd 2011

Mum and I left Kempsey around 8:30 on Tuesday. The flat coastal plains were soon left behind as we headed along the Oxley Highway, through Wauchope, up the valleys and along the winding road to the top of the range and Walcha. It was brisk and chilly 15 deg when we stopped for morning tea at the top, quite different to the balmy 23 we left behind in Kempsey. Walcha had some interesting art in the park in the centre of town. We can't quite workout what the fountain was but it was interesting. Will try to get a picture up tonight for you all. We turned south on the New England and headed for Tamworth. Claire had a short list of items for us to get from Kmart. It proved easy to find and we ... read more
