Well howdy folks, The day started at 0545 hours as my alarm on my super Casio watch beeped loudly. Just time for a swift cuppa then shower and dress for taxi at 0630 hours. Dave and Julie kindly/foolishly saw us off, probably just to ensure we were leaving them again but I am sure they went back to bed immediately after our departure. Got to Melbourne airport and dropped off the bags and without any problem flew to Sydney. Quite a busy bustling airport with people everywhere. Had a bacon sarni as we were then informed the flight to Hamilton Island had a 30 minute delay. We then took off to Hamilton Island, for the first time on a flight noticed the flight wasn’t full and thought they know something we don’t. Arrived at Hamilton Island ... read more

24 03 2010 Great Barrier Reef day Well the day arrived and it was raining and windy, not a good start for our plane trip. Undeterred we ate a hearty breakfast and read the papers and had a cup of tea. So far so good. At 1100 the minibus came to the reception and collected us. Wendy and I were the only passengers on it. We were taken to the side of the airport where Hamilton aviation are based. Nobody else there and we watched an instructional video on helicopter safety. Great we booked to go in a plane and even better we were going in a helicopter. Marvellous and we were the only passengers. Bert introduced himself and was a proper Aussie, same age and height and weight as me. The helicopter was a Robinson ... read more

Back on the bus about 30 minutes after the skydive finished and we were on our way to Airlie Beach ready for our sailing adventure. AT 7pm the next day we boarded Anaconda III, a giant mega-yacht, to sail around the Whitsunday islands. It was lashing rain within an hour of departure and the crossing to our anchor point for the evening was an experience in itself. I loved the massive rocking from side to side, but Blair, Siobhan and Hatty, our room-mate for the trip, were all feeling worse for wear. Siobhan and Blair each went to have a look at nature from the back of the boat - that's what they say when you spew up off the side! In some ways it was disappointing to not see a lot of the scenery at ... read more

If only everyone had a chance to view the Great Barrier Reef from the spectacular seat of a helicopter…words provide only stumbling limitations of ways to try and describe the beauty and splendor of such an image. But I’m getting ahead of myself. Let’s start at the beginning... Rain had been pouring down for a few days in and around Brisbane (and the whole of Queensland for that matter) before Shawn and I left on our 5-day trip to the Whitsunday Islands. We were ready for a nice little “holiday” on our current holiday and I think we were each equally looking forward to our trip. Photographs of the Whitsunday Islands are amazing and I really did not want to be disappointed - what I did not expect was to be exceptionally stunned. Upon our arrival ... read more

Day 104: Thursday, March 11th, 2010. Whitsundays, Australia. Once again I was happy to wake up to sunrise so that the sleepless night could end. We ate breakfast and headed over to Blue Pearl Bay where we did some more snorkeling. Then, we had lunch and The Broomstick headed over to Sunlovers Bay and Daydream Island (where we'd be dropped off.) They rolled out the sails and the boat was tipping so much that myself and Alana were gripping for our lives because we had chosen our seats poorly and we were trying to sit on a cooler as the boat tipped about 75 degrees. It was crazy, but awesome. The crew started playing the "Top Gun" soundtrack as we neared the island and it was very fitting. ... read more

Day 103: Wednesday, March 10th, 2010 Whitsundays, Australia. Not much sleep was had and I was thrilled when sunrise hit so I could get up. I just sat and read until others started waking up and soon we had breakfast and headed over to Tongue Bay and Whitehaven Beach. Once again we suited up in "stinger suits". The water was amazing and this was probably the most beautiful beach I've ever seen. We get back on the boat and head over to Maureen's Cove where we do some more snorkeling and see more amazing fish. It wasn't as amazing as snorkeling on the Great Barrier Reef (we're on inner reef's here) but it was still pretty damn cool. Lunch and dinner is on the boat aga... read more

Our last trip was amazing! We traveled by night bus to Airlie Beach (12 hours total), the bus ride was great and we all slept the entire way! Once there we got some lunch we checked in for our boat trip, 3 days/2 nights of sailing in the Whitsunday Islands. The ride was smooth from the beginning and we ended the first day with a great dinner on the boat and good drinks with the whole boat, about 20 backpackers in all. The next day we woke up at 7 and started sailing. The water was a little rough to say the least, the boat was so bumpy that I wasn't even able to put jam on my toast because it was physically to hard to move across the kitchen, of course that didn’t really matter ... read more
