Well it’s been a really long time since I last wrote an entry on here, but hopefully I’ll make up for it with a good catchup session! In fact I wrote this entry about a month ago and have just been so busy that I've only now had chance to post it! Sorry! I’m now flying again and that’s kindof the reason why I haven’t been able to write as I’m just so damned busy! My roster is pretty full on with lots of days on and not many days off, but I’ll talk more about that later. We’re settled into our apartment now and haven’t made a trip to Ikea for at least a month. We do need to go again though because our cutlery selection is getting inbalanced. My housemate Ben and I keep ... read more

So here we are, three weeks in and I've finally got around to starting my blog. Actually, maybe not, Ben's just finished dinner so I'll have to come back to start writing! Back from dinner, so here we go. I left Cowling on the 17th March for the long journey down to Gatwick Airport. Mum and Dad dropped me off at Burnley and I continued on to Gatwick via Manchester and London. I thought it'd be nice to have one night in the Premier Inn to relax before the mammoth journey out to Oz. Had just enough time to hand in the remainder of my VA uniform and ID at work and still had time for a nice meal and catch up with my old school friend Ed who came down from London for the night. ... read more

Oceania April 16th 2010

Travelling home was a bit of a challenge! Took me 48 hours and I decided to do it in one stint and for some reason didn't really manage to sleep, so was so glad when I did finally get back. I went Auckland to Sydney with Qantas, waited 7 hours in Sydney then went in Upper Class on Virgin (finally got my upper class upgrade concession) from Sydney to Hong Kong. The flight from Hong Kong was full, but luckily I'd faxed and emailed a jumpseat request to the Captain, so unluckily for me, I was on a jumpseat for 13 hours! Good to not have been left behind though! I finally arrived in London and had to wait five hours for my bus back to Yorkshire. Never mind jetlag, I was so tired I slept ... read more

After getting back to Auckland and checking back into Base Hostel, I had about 15 minutes spare to have a shower and change before meeting up with Ed and family. We went for a lovely meal and a few beers before they headed back over to Devenport where they were staying in a B&B. The next morning was an early start, I was on the ferry with Maccy Ds in hand at 08:45! With Ed in the driving seat we all met up in Devenport and set off heading north, destination Bay of Islands. The drive took a few hours and it was lovely to have a change of pace. We were stopping for Coffees and Cake in nice cafes and sightseeing stops wherever we wanted. I think that the last week ended up being more ... read more

I arrived into Auckland on a bright sunny day and spent three days exploring the city. The first evening I headed up Mount Eden to see beautiful views of the cityscape lit up at night. The following day I decided what it was I wanted to see and booked transport and wandered around the city. The third day I met up with Elaine, who I'd originally met in Cairns. We had lunch and coffee over in a place called Devenport, which is a 12 minute ferry away from the city. The hostel I stayed in was massive, ten floors with I don't know how many rooms on each floor and I don't know how many people in each room, but to be honest, I don't think the hostel knew! Twice when I checked into this hostel ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Noosa March 26th 2010

The further south we headed the nicer the weather was, which was good as we were fast approaching our final stop before leaving Australia, in Noosa. Noosa is a lovely small town in the middle of the sunshine coast. We arrived off the bus as usual with nowhere to stay and tried to get beds in the YHA which the Lonely Planet guide described as amazing. They had three beds left but at a cost of $34.00 each. We ummed and ahhed and told her we'd call back. 5 minutes later we called back and the beds were gone. Oops! So none of us could really be bothered to make a decision so I pottered around on the Internet and the guys read their books and after about two hours of sitting in the bus shelter ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Fraser Island March 19th 2010

Our next stop was Rainbow Beach for Fraser Island, the biggest sand island in the world. We had a 16 hour coach journey to get there and we opted to travel through the night, which actually meant that the journey went really quickly. I didn't sleep solidly the whole night through, but I definitely slept for a fair few hours. We had a night in Rainbow in a lovely B&B (the hostels were all full) before being picked up in our 4x4 ready to head onto Fraser Island. It's a fantastic place, where all the driving is done on the sand and the main road is essentially the outer beach around the island. We had to avoid the incoming saltwater like it was lava (that's how our guide described it) because of the damage it causes ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Whitsundays March 13th 2010

Back on the bus about 30 minutes after the skydive finished and we were on our way to Airlie Beach ready for our sailing adventure. AT 7pm the next day we boarded Anaconda III, a giant mega-yacht, to sail around the Whitsunday islands. It was lashing rain within an hour of departure and the crossing to our anchor point for the evening was an experience in itself. I loved the massive rocking from side to side, but Blair, Siobhan and Hatty, our room-mate for the trip, were all feeling worse for wear. Siobhan and Blair each went to have a look at nature from the back of the boat - that's what they say when you spew up off the side! In some ways it was disappointing to not see a lot of the scenery at ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Mission Beach March 11th 2010

Siobhan and Blair arrived into Cairns as I got back from up north, reunited to do the other half of the east coast after we left off at Brisbane back last October. We all bought hop-on hop-off Greyhound bus passes to Brissy and set off on our final Australia journey, the first stop being Mission Beach for our Skydive. It hadn't really dawned on me what we were going to be doing until I'd watched a few of my Cairns room-mates' DVDs from when they did it. Our first night in Mission Beach we met up Stehpania, a girl who I used to work with who's now working at the hostel. There was a real party atmosphere and the drinking games started early, so by midnight we were completely pissed and supposed to be getting up ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Cape Tribulation March 5th 2010

It still amazes me how many contrasting types of scenery there are in Australia. Getting off the plane in Cairns, well in the tropics, it felt weird to even be in the same country. Everything is so green and lush and there are big hills everywhere. The humidity is almost unbearable and you sweat even when you're not doing anything, although that's only at this time of year which is the wet season, where the temperature is at its highest and so's the rainfall. Cairns itself wasn't all that interesting. There are a few nice places to see, but mainly it seemed to be a traveller town with a lot of cheap and cheerful bars full of drunken backpackers. I'd had enough of drinking after Sydney, so as soon as I arrived I booked myself transport ... read more
