Hi all, Well, hope none of you headed over to Arkoroola to meet us because we did a 360" turn and decided to go north. We meet someone coming from the south and they were talking temperatures of up to -6, so we made an easy choice. Currently in Middlemount, a mining town out the back of Mackay, staying with my (Tom's) nephew Luke and his partner Amanda, and meeting their kids for the first time. From Innamincka we went north east to Eromanga, a great little outback town with Kangaroos hoping down the main street, and sheep too! Next onto Charleville to a packed campground. School holidays up here. Went to the Bilby centre and saw the little critters and learnt a bit about their battle for survival. Also went to the Cosmos centre, and ... read more

Sat. 10 June. World Cup looms. Monday night Australia v. Japan. Warm rainy day. Spruiked early (before rain) with strikiing result. No newspaper article. Next week? Stamped stickers at surf club. Watched young in small boats prepare and race. Breeze came in. Steady rain. Lunch read. Hot shower marina. Then stillness; it stopped. Kookaburras fluffed like doonas, their wet weather wardrobe. Watching them watch for food moving about. Nine kookaburras perched in the rain. Sunday 11. Early spruik in Yeppoon then the long drive but very pleasant to Mackay. Rolling country cane fields sprinkled with chains of mountain ridges. Gum trees aplenty. Hunting birds. Then coastal views of many islands. In Mackay vast expanses of sand at low tide. The long pier and ships at anchor. Ground feeding lorikeets with epaulets... read more

Well we have left Airile Beach after cyclone Larry ruined my dream of diving my first time on the Great Barrier Reef. We are now in MaKay at a friends house. I feel like I am living the life of luxury. I got to have a BUBBLE BATH and sleep in a QUEEN SIZE bed. After living out of a car for the last few months I felt like was at a SPA. Really, it was just nice to sit at someones house and have supper like normal people. Horray! Airlie Beach was such a cool town. Its mainly just a little beach town that backpackers stay at on the way to their next destination. It has heaps of tours, from sailing the islands to diving, to croc safaris. There are a tonne of young people ... read more

Just a quick note to say we made it safely out of the path of Cyclone Larry yesterday. The eye of the storm was supposed to hit land about 50 km south of where we were (Cairns) bringing 280 km winds, so we hoped in our car and drove 9 hours down the coast. As it turns out it was a Category 5 storm by the time it hit Cairns (about 14 hours after we had left) so there's pretty extensive damage. Where we are now it is fine, sunny but with strong winds. -Michelle... read more
