We first met Pat and Marian on our WA trek last year. A shared adventure to Wolf Creek Crater began our friendship and travelling together for 16 days cemented it. We parted having different destinations and time commitments. We just ‘hit it off’ with each other and were looking forward to catching up again as they continued their journey through SA on their way back to Qld. Tragically Pat passed away as they continued to travel in WA. Marian lives in the Pioneer Valley just out of MacKay so our visit to Tristan and Zoe gave us the perfect opportunity to catch up with her again. It was just like old times. Marian lives on an elevated mango farm with a stunning view of the Pioneer Valley. Mountain ranges in the distance framed the checker-board sugar ... read more

Kazza wanted to say that she had the best shanks ever... which is stupid cause I will never make them for her ever again. Disappointed I haven't found a snake yet. Clermont Hotel, only in Australia would they move a pub during a flood on removable railway sleepers.... didn't stop trading and i'm tipping that never a drop was spilt. Kazza got excited cause she thought we were doing a wine tour,,,, must be selective hearing cause I definently said MINE tour Three weeks to go!!!!... read more

What does my title mean, you ask? well im not sure. But i think it means to get geared up or excited about somthing. What am i excited about? Getting out of this damn town! the only reason anyone is here is to work in the coal mine. Which explains why when i arrived there were no vacancy signs up everywhere. (its not because this town is so charming!) The last 5 days it has rained NON STOP. I cannot believe the entire town isnt under water (i hear that happens quite frequently) Thankfully I made some Aussie friends and they took me around the town and had me over for dinner (twice), which was great becasue the last 3-4 days i have spend at McDonalds and in my room watching movies, LAME. They were good ... read more

300 kms round trip to Mackay to pick up a mate from the airport who has come over from WA to stay on Hamilton Island for a few days ... Had thought of staying over there too, but at $768 for a three night room, I reckon that Airlie is the place to be.. Mackay is a real “mining” town, servicing the local coal industry, along with a modern shipyard, although still has a lot to offer the tourist. Should be well used to the trip as I return to the airport on Friday and back again to collect Mia on Monday. I am so excited about Mia arriving, and it looks like there will be plenty of work here for her. The more time I am spending in the Whitsundays’ the more I have the ... read more

Rockhampton - Mackay The Queen’s birthday today, not that I would have ever known, apart from the fact it is advertised everywhere, and for most Australians it is a public holiday. So let’s start off with a morning riddle. What do you do when you have a stomach full of meat from the night before? Well, pile more meat on top of it of course! We have a sausage sandwich for breakfast and it sits there like a lead balloon. Back on the road again, feel like the littlest hobo at the moment - “Maybe tomorrow, I’ll want to settle down, until tomorrow, I’ll just keep moving on.” (OK, how many of you sang the words as you read them?). We still haven’t seen any cows yet, perhaps they’ve already been taken to the abattoir. “Dead ... read more

Hi all, since our last blog Carissa and I have made our way up to sunny Mackay QLD. At this point I must apologise for the lack of contact, turns out our wireless broadband is not so wireless. Not to worry… Since leaving Asia behind us we were home for a brief stint to celebrate a friends wedding (congratulations Ollie &Aanika) before journeying North to the Central Queensland coast. Carissa flew up ahead to start working early and I drove up over a period of 4 days. Props to Stan and Pauline at Arrawarra, Ed at Brisvegas, and Julieanne and Alan at Gladdy for your kind hospitality. Mackay is a regional centre that has grown significantly in recent years largely due to the continued mining boom in and around the region. Carissa is working at one ... read more

Held each Labour day weekend for the last 11 years near Mackay is this wonderful music festival. It started off as a tiny local event for the folk muso's in the area, and now it has become a huge four day event with guest artists from all over Australia. It is held at Cameron's Pocket which is north and west of Mackay on private property skirting the foothills of Eungella National Park. Jenny Drake and Chris Cann were the initial organisers who have been fantastic enough to give so much of their own time, money and energy each year to run this wonderful event along with thousands of volunteers and friends. This year Bob Eden came on board as festival organiser. 2007 brought fantastic acts from all over Australia singing a range of music from ... read more

Mackay Another day, another town, with only 5 weeks to travel from Cairns to Sydney in Martha (our campervan) our East Coast tour is somewhat whistle stop. One main road connects the two cities and with most towns and cities worth seeing just off this road, it makes map reading a doddle even for someone with my horrendous sense of direction. On day 10 we reached Mackay and after a few false starts found a decent van site. We began the roadtrip with romantic delusions of pulling up to deserted roadsides with private beaches and spending the night alone, the reality is that the van needs power to get the ceiling van Matt has installed to work, the fridge dies without power for extended periods and those romatic spots are not only dark but toilet and ... read more

We were supposed to arrive in Airlie beach at 6.15am. At 4.00am we pulled into a service station just north of Mckay. We'd heard that it was a bit on the wet side further up, but weren't quite expecting the cyclone which was busy flooding all the roads further up. We were then in the service station until 3pm. I slept a bit once we'd pulled up, and then went across for a shower in the services as happened to have my stuff on the coach, a bacon sandwich and a coffee, which sorted me out a bit. Never seen rain like it ever. Absolutely ridiculous. The rest of the day passed without much excitement as you might imagine, apart from when an ambulance turned up outside for fuel and Paul checked on his ankle, which ... read more
