Great Artesian Water Basin

The Windmill and sculpture represents the importance of artesian water in the outback. Bore water is Barky's drinking water and has been since 1910. It's not filtered and quite nice. The first bore in QLD was sunk 40kms from here.

Just wandering along the street and ran into folks we met in Victoria, Gary and Lynette. Good to catch up!

1914 to 1956. Barcaldine was the first town in Central West QLD to generate electricity. Firstly with coal burning, then wood.

This is our next camp spot, we are over there amongst the trees. Very little water due to the drought and the nature of the Lake Eyre Basin catchment.

These waterways run into Lake Eyre. There is no permanent flowing river in the basin. Flow usually last from a few days to a few weeks.

Built 1952. Rivers out here are made up of widely separated waterholes.

The water is permanent from an artesian spring and is warm with low salinity. The dirty colour comes from fine dust particles. Still we enjoyed sitting by the river and watching the antics of the locals.

Then slip off when an eagle flies overhead.
