Home Hill is a tiny country village en route from Bowen to Ayr. We hadn’t really planned to stop there and it was the ‘Home Hill Comfort Stop’ that made that decision for us. It’s a spot with BBQ facilities and lukewarm showers where travelers can stay for free for up to 48 hours. The village itself is a bit of a dive so we figured that this is an effective way to boost the economy and get people to spend some money there. Instead of having names, Home Hill’s streets are all numbered, ie “Fourth St” and “Fifth Ave” etc. Very New York for a little country settlement! Our camping was a very interesting old chap: permanently on the road, Gary liked to drink and loved to talk. Many conversations and jokes later (Gary even ... read more

Well since I'm on a tight budget i managed to arrange a free lift down to Brisbane on one on the trucks taking fruit from the packing shed down to the markets. It was about 20 hours ride on some of the bumpiest roads I've been on, but was a great way to see some of the county side since your so high up. Thought I'd stick a few picture on my blog for you to take a look at.... read more

My Home Hill Family. I was the first to get to the Malpass and found I was on my own for a few weeks but by the time I had come back from catching up with Curly in Mackay the place was really busy. Ended up making some really close friends who I hope will always remain in touch. We had a great time together and these are just a few pictures of us all together. There was a fair amount of drinking involved but the work was hard so you kind of needed it when you got in after a long day. You know I don't approve of drinking!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ... read more

Well I started a job last Thursday and i can already say I’ve had enough. I've been picking Capsicums or Green peppers to you and me. It's all very low to the ground so my knees, back and neck have took a pounding, not to mention working in the sun all day. The only way i got through Saturday was by banging painkillers down like smarties. It's not very nice, especially if your tall and people usually only last a week so this week I’ll be working in a packing shed. The pays the same but it’s better conditions and mainly lifting. I've been working with another English lad, 2 Dutch and a French lad. There all a good laugh and it did make the days a bit more fun. It's picked up at the backpackers ... read more

Hey everyone. Sorry it's been a while since I’ve updated this. Got a few more entries to put in when I get chance as well. I've been all over the place trying to get work so I’ve finally ended up in a place called Home Hill in Northern Queensland. The farming season starts off next week and the hotel manager has got me a job in a packing shed. The place I’m staying is pretty cool; it’s an old pub with backpacker’s accommodation up stairs. The owners are really friendly and can't do enough for you so think I’ll enjoy staying here. They have some work for me to do to the hotel this week that will mean I get my accommodation free for the week. Plus the other bonus is there’s a pub down stairs ... read more

"Las Vegas of North Queensland", "Queenslands hidden gem !!", "Paradise Found !!". Just some of the comments that will never, ever be written about Home Hill !! The signs were there of course. When we got on the bus in Airlie Beach and told the driver we were going to Home Hill, he looked at me like I'd walked into his house on Christmas Day and peed on his kids. "Home Hill ?? Are you sure ??". "Er, yeah I'm sure". "Well I don't have any baggage tags for Home Hill, no-one normally gets off there". It should really have set alarm bells ringing at that point but for one reason or another, it didn't. We had phoned ahead to The Malpass Hotel in Home Hill from Airlie beach and was greeted by Phil the owner. ... read more
