G'Day Bloggers It just seems bizarre to be getting up on a November day when the sun is bright and you know the day is going to be hot! But this is a November day, closer to Christmas than summer and people are dressed for the beach. We walked in to Brisbane centre, only 20 minutes in to town, and went straight to the Queensland department of transport. The Australians love their ticket machines, take a ticket and sit down until we call you. A101, (6) that’s us, counter six. We walk over to counter six (6) unsure of what we were doing, we don’t have a permanent address, but do have our British passports, credit cards, British driving licenses. We have filled in the correct form, I know we have been here before. A very ... read more

Hi Bloggers, That dreaded 3.00 moment occurred again today, we had slept solidly since 10.15 the night before so it was not too bad and considering we had a long sleep in the afternoon when we arrived in Brisbane, we probably did not need much more. Lying In bed a while longer we decided to have a cup of tea and Andy wanted to write the blog for yesterday, so I watched a little bit of television. We had set the alarm for 7.00 in an effort to start trying to get ourselves back into a reasonable routine like having breakfast at the right time in some vain bid also to try and knock the jet lag out of us, but again that failed miserably as instead of getting up for breakfast at 6.00 when we ... read more

Again awoke at around 3.09 in the wide-awake club, this jetlag thing is starting to get on my nerves. It is affecting both Caroline and myself at virtually the same time. This morning it was the usual routine, telly on, telly off, Kettle on, telly on, telly off, talk then finally drift of to sleep. When we finally woke at around 11.00, we slowly managed to come to, and again find a friend, the kettle. Today was our leaving day and we had to ensure all our bags were packed and phones, camera’s, ipod’s etc. charged for the onward journey to Brisbane. Caroline’s tummy clock was ringing and she was in need of breakfast, which by the time we got there was lunch. Due to Caroline’s fish allergy we have to be careful when selecting from ... read more

The count down actually began back in April. But here I am past the one month to go mark. To be completely accurate I have 25 days and 3 hours until I board a plane to Phuket. Then I will be spending the next four weeks in amazing Thailand (Well I haven't been there yet so I can't say for sure it's amazing, but hey from what I have heard). So for anyone who doesn't know this is the plan: Eight Days in Phuket, staying in a very nice, touristy resort. And then up to Bangkok to start the real adventure. From Bangkok I am going north to Ayuthura (the old capital) then to Chiang Mai. From there I will be doing a three day hill trek though Northern Thailand. Then over to Chiang Rai. This ... read more

Wine has tannin in it. The amount of tannin a wine has is determined by how long the skins float on top of the wine in the tank. The floating skins also determine the color. Except if you are Baco Noir, then you will always be red. This is why red wines have more tannins than white wines do. This probably also explains why Baco Noir is my favourite. The 3 types of grapes used in sparkling wines are............wait for it............wait for it.................Chradonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier. Who cares? The people who run the Napa shuttle bus tours do. Also I've been getting random sunburns, hence 'Too Much Tannin'. Also I've been buying cheap Aussie Cask wine, hence, incoherent blog entries. Love you guys. Ciao Christine no 'ah'... read more

This weekend was another Tour de Brisbane. Jess, Mariko and I headed down Saturday afternoon with chocolate chip cookies and a crate (which I think makes it sound like you are about to drink a dumpster full of beer) of beer. Saturday night was fun yet not much different than a night out at home would be...if I hadn't paid attention to the accents and the fact that bar service is INCREDIBLY slow I would have thought I was in Toronto. But Sunday was different. We woke up and headed out for a breakfast of hamburger with egg and bacon (I recommend you all start eating this as there is so much protein it held me over for HOURS) and chicken salted fries (I think this is overrated). After wards Mariko, Luke and I got on ... read more

Well, what can I say? I couldn't fight the urge to write one last entry as this beautiful trip comes to an end. Actually, I just forgot about the fact that I had to sleep deprive myself in order to sleep on my long flight back home... so right now, I'm really bored in the hostel's lobby, trying to stay awake so that tomorrow (Louise's longest day EVER), will go by smoothly... I have a 150g chocolate bar in front of me and am running on about 4 hours of sleep from the night before. So far, so good. Sunday night, I started feeling really antsy about my imminent trip back home.... I was packing and trying desperately to be efficient so that I wouldn't have much left to do when getting into Brisbane. I also ... read more

Well I finally made it out to see the Grampians National Park on Saturday, on a tour with three other people. We left bright and early on Saturday morning, and headed off North-West, stopping in Beaufort for morning tea and biscuits (I do enjoy this british tradition), and then continuing on to Halls Gap, the major town in the National Park. In terms of sightseeing, we didn't do very much, which was a bit disapointing, but expected with a guided tour. I didn't even get to see any climbing at all. We started off by doing an easy hike called Wonderland, going through the Wonderland ranges and getting a close look at the Elephant Hide (a rock formation that is slabby and looks, well, like an elephant hide). Then, we headed into town for some lunch. ... read more

I would, even just being able to see one would be great, but Brisbane is still a big enough city that the lights from it block out all the stars. Yes, I've landed in Brisbane. It was a bit of a mad dash up here - once I started thinking about going to Brisbane, I started applying for massage jobs here. One got back to me almost straight away, wanting to know when I could start. I had a phone interview with Philip Rule, the owner of Majestic Massage, and he said he was willing to hire me, sight unseen, but I had to get up to Brisbane as soon as possible. I booked myself on the red-eye for the next day, and told him I'd be happy to do an 'interview' massage on him on ... read more

Hello! We went directly from Airlie Beach to Hervey Bay, the main jumping off point for Fraser Island. It was packed with other backpackers on their way to day trips or safaris, and we had hoped to do some whale watching but were told it is the wrong time of year. The next day we left for Fraser Island, a 'World Heritage listed sand bar created by 800,000 years of longshore drift', according to my Lonely Planet. There was six of us in our group, one other girl and three boys whom we had met the previous night to buy our food for the trip. Having chosen the self drive 4x4 option, we had the freedom to explore the island in our own time and escape the crowds. We drove to Lake Mckenzie which was pretty ... read more
