Hi everyone! As most you know by now, I've made it safely to Brisbane. The plane ride from LAX was actually very good. Qantas is a great airline, I heard that they weren't but I had as good of a time as I could have on a 13 hour plane ride. I'm currently staying at a Hostel in the west end of Brisbane called somewhere to stay. As far as hostels go, it's very nice. I'm staying here one more night and then I'll hopefully have a permanent place to stay (I'm crossing my fingers) Today I'm looking for a place to stay and things are looking hopeful. I'm looking at a really nice flat in Kangaroo Point this evening and I think things will go well. I must go, I miss you all! Cheers! Nicole ... read more

I surfaced this morning with all the grace of a 747 on take off, how many more ways can I describe the phenomenon that is getting out of bed? I have the beginnings of a cold I believe, feel a tad snuffly...hopefully it won't manifest into anything too serious, full blown terminal man flu is the last thing on my agenda!! The one o'clock bus was late so by the time I arrived in the City, I was behind schedule...well, I would have been had I had one!! Today's excursion took me to the Maritime Museum on the South Bank and then up into the memorial park...the museum had lots of interesting bit n pieces of knowledge that I found very useful and have saved those into my databanks ready for recollection for the typical Australian ... read more

I crawled out of bed and to the kettle at 9am today and spent the morning researching Greyhound coach fares to both Byron Bay (for Caroline and Elizabeth visit) and Chinchilla in readiness for the 2009 Melon Festival. Once I had both those figured out (and pretty cheaply too), Mike re-introduced me to the wonders of Macgyver...which I had actually forgotten how good it was. Indeed, using chocolate to seal a leaking acid tank was pure genius!! My nostalgia intake fulfilled, I took a long stroll to the bus stop and hopped onto the 345 bus into the City to continue my adventures. There was actually lots to see on the journey, Alderley train station which would look good converted to 'Hornby Size' and probably more worrying, a business unit called Fuchs High Performance Lubricants...it's just ... read more

I surfaced early this morning like a submarine rising through the waves, not quite as dramatically but you get the effect yeah? Today's mission was a trip to The Brisbane Gallery Of Modern Arts 'Optimism' exhibition which was absolutely insane!!! The most novel exhibits were Patricia Piccinini's converted Vespa's, Kate Murphy's 'Cry Me A Future' which featured a video of herself listening to her late grandmothers voice with tears streaming down her face...which made everyone want to cry and best of all, Tom Moore's 'Auto-ganics', which I can only describe as Chorton and The Wheelies meets the M25! A busy three hours was rewarded with a nice cold pint of Hoegarden...I am certainly clocking up the beer count right now though my belly is certainly clocking up the inches!!!... read more

I have been in Brisbane a whole week now and today I embarked on my second self guided proper tour of the City this time taking in the Queensland Museum and Brisbane Art Gallery. The exact definition of art worries me especially having just seen the most un-artistic exhibit I have ever seen in my entire life... a framed piece of corrugated cardboard which looked like it had just been taken out of a Christmas Hamper with a few random folds in it! That's not Art!!! It's 'Crap'!!! Having picked myself up from the floor after laughing myself silly, I then took a nostalgic trip back to the Eighties taking in the 'Game On' exhibition at the State Library which was simply awesome!!! Basically, it was a collection of old computer and games consoles plus arcade ... read more

G'day yall, Happy Aussie Day...Mike dropped me off at Mitchelton Station so I could catch the train into the City Centre for the first time of my Brisbane experience. Having just missed the 11.37, I sat on the platform and quietly awaited the 12.07 to arrive. However, the temporary peace was subsequently shattered by a single airforce jet screeching across the sky...causing me to both duck and then wonder where the hell it went before the sonic boom arrived a few minutes later desperately trying to catch up!! Now suffering partial deafness, I boarded the train and journeyed into central Brisbane, in a way, I was actually relieved my hearing was out of whack when some foul mouthed indigenous people got on and started turning the air blue with comments about the effing Invaders. My first ... read more

16/1/09 = I love you Southbank Woke up early today, but didn't matter, because had had such a good nights sleep anyway. Decided to be v.productive and wash my clothes...I'm turning into quite the little washer women. By time had finished, Hat re-appeared (she been up since 6) and we went down for breakfast. Had nice lovely museli (not bing sarcastic) and got chatting to Iris = german girl. Had already planned our day = CityCat ferry to take us along river, with a stop at Southbank and also a bus trip to lookout. Iris decided to join us and set leaving time for 9:30. Got showered and ready, then all met downstairs and headed off on time. Deb had already made up our packed lunches for day, so headed straight down towards Riverside. Riverside itself ... read more

Waking up this morning to the newspapers that were full of the devastation from last night’s storms across the Gold Coast. A mini tornado swept the Gold Coast and the outskirts of Brisbane. We watched the storm safely ensconced in hour hotel room without realising the devastation that it was leaving in its wake. Indeed our hotel suffered only with a power cut, yet houses in the region have lost their roofs, trees are down and sadly one man died after being swept away by waters in a storm drain. One woman on the news this morning was showing the size of the hailstones that came down, they were the size of golf balls - I think she had kept them in her freezer to show the news crews as they were coming round. The skies ... read more

Today when we went to Streets beach we managed to get our 2 towels spread under a large tree directly out of the sun. We had slathered up in the recommended Factor 30 sunscreen. Again it was about 30 degree’s and very warm, obviously a wind down day for the sun worshippers. We both metaphorically dived in to our books, and I managed to finish mine. Our existence is quite peculiar at the moment, we have a hearty breakfast, to the beach, grab some sun, have lunch, have some more sun, then go back to our hotel room to sort some stuff out. Around 4.00pm the thunder and lightning started, followed 10 minutes later by an incredible storm, the lightning was awesome and Caroline tried to capture it on digital camera, with mediocre results, still she ... read more

Yummy breakfast came and went, a couple of the Rydges staff are equally enthralled to see how we are getting on with our toil, they were delighted about our driving licence success, and as we wandered down to sign in for breakfast, smilingly, asked how things were going. We have had to extend our stay at Rydges, as we are taking longer than anticipated to “time adjust”. Today we decided that we would go down to Streets beach and catch some sun, it is about 30 degree’s the sun is very bright, and the sky is very blue. When we got down to Streets it was already quite busy, loads of families had brought their cool boxes and picnics along to spend a day at the beach. We set up our pitch and grabbed an ... read more
