.... as the journey continued jerry still kept flirting, but I stood my ground! Other than the touching up from a camel the ride through the desert was pretty nice, which was complimented by a lovely sunset, although as soon as the sunset it was freezin! Yoli went prepared with a hoodie, I on the other hand did not! If it got much colder I may of needed to seek some camel lovin to keep me warm, but (thankfully) before this scenario occured we had returned to the camel farm - a warm building and cold beer awaited - sorry Jerry! We'd dismounted our camels - which wsa an event in its self - yoli thought this process was worse than the ascent! and returned inside for a couple of cold ones and a few nibbles, ... read more

we made it to the Ayres Rock after a relitivly good flight - or so yoli tells me - i was flat out the whole way! we had to be up and out of the hotel for 5.30am - not good! Nevermind, we made it to the Outback Pioneer. the weather has been really good - plenty of sun and no cloud - result! so our 1st day comprimised of not alot really - although to yoli's delight we booked the 'sounds of silence' dinner for this evening - a meal under the stars in the middle of the desert after watchin the sun go down over Uluru and Kata Tjuta - that was pretty amazin! whilst there we took a stack of photos, and did the usual "can you take our photo?" routeen, ended up ... read more

It seems like a long time since i blogged and it is true. I am writing day four at the end of day 5. I can tell you that that the 13 to 13 members are stuffed! As I write, 5 kids are doing their diary entries and there is total silence. 13 is organizing dinner, jac and i are having a much deserved g and t. Anyway, enough formalities. Here goes. Uluru. wow. That's it. Speechless at points, verbal diarrhoea at others. So much to see, a long day. Headed to the cultural centre first and had a quick squizz. Then to the massive monolith. We all walked the 9.4 k's around the base. Too windy to climb but an experience i would not have missed. Amazing contrasts in colors , vegetation and shapes. Rock paintings ... read more

WOW! Can't believe we are actually here. How is this rock? Along the drive today we were blown away by the majesty of Mt Conner which you encounter before you get to Uluru. Then Uluru came into view. A long drive here today from Coober Pedy this morning. The opal mines were incredible and stretched for miles and miles, the landscape like something out of Star Wars. The environment changed as we journeyed from South Australia into NT. It was rocky and sparse at first, the trees set out like suburbs, each tree having its own plot. But then the dirt became redder and sandier, the trees greyer or even black. Sometimes there were clusters of trees, all looking as if they needed a good water and a feed. And it was pretty flat, only the ... read more

Hello people. Today we headed to Uluru. Pretty boring drive but once we got past the border of adelaide the scenery got better and we saw some eagles. A couple of bits of road kill and red sand. Joe and I watched a couple of movies as well. The place we're staying at has a pool and a really good play-ground. Spaghetti Bolognaise for dinner and hopefully chilli prawns tomorrow. Can't think of anything else to say so bye. Jack on 13 to 13. HI everyone! Today we drove all the way from Coober Pedy to Uluru! We drove in the middle of nowwhere for ages, although still having fun. We have seen quite a few eagles on our travels so far, a few today having lunch on the dead kangaroo. I've been to the look-out ... read more

Sept 3, 2008 Port Augusta 2088 km so far. Good help from the chap at the Home Hardware (yep home) concerning gas (propane) and bottle exchange, etc. Good help, too, from the lady at the Info Centre. About roadhouses all the way to Alice Springs. A bit of a warning to keep away from some of the bore (well) water. Pretty salty and not good for you. Walked along the Esplanade in Port Augusta. Not very long, but really well kept. Right on Spencer Gulf. Good meal and a beer at Ian’s Western Inn just down the road from the caravan park. Second night we had BBQ Lamb steak. First time I had barbequed it and likely the first time we have ever had lamb steak before. Sept 4, 2008 Port Augusta to Glendambo Nice easy ... read more

The requirement to hum along to that classic piece of Smokie is not obligatory as you read the blog. Uluru is apparently the most visited single site in Australia and if you are wondering if it's worth the effort to get there, the answer is a big yes! We'd been up at some hour well before dawn again, leaving South Australia behind and crossing into the Territory. There clearly wasn't much distinction between the two, as we rolled on past mile after mile of scrub and desert, which was punctuated by yesterday's road kill and feasting wedge tailed eagles. The distance on the map as your fingers space out suggests that the rock is literally next door to Alice, but the distances out here are immense. After a full day of driving from Coober Pedy, we ... read more

last night just before sunset we got picked up from our hotel to go on what was called the 'sounds of silence' dinner. there was probably 50 or 60 people went to this. we drove out to the bush, no houses nothing. after a very bumpy ride as we weren't even on a proper road we pulled over where this guy was standing, he was the host and led us up to an area where this guy (hunk) was playing the didgeridoo then waiters served us champagne and canapes. the guy told us about the hisory of the didgeridoo and some stories. the canapes were kangaroo and crocodile. loves the croc ones, bit like chicken but more chewy. then as the sun was setting we walked down the hill where there were several tables laid out ... read more

We waved "goodbye" to the East Coast feeling very sorry to leave after all the great times we've had there and boarded a plane to Ayers Rock. We stayed at the resort which is a purpose built and overpriced "village" in the middle of the desert within striking distance of both Uluru (Ayers Rock) and Kata Tjuta (The Olgas). As I was still feeling pretty rotten, we didn't do much at all on the first day except for book onto buses to go to the two sites and explore the resort a bit. The Outback Pioneer provided the cheapest accomodation but wasn't worth the $30 a night as we were in an unheated dorm of 20 which was freezing at night when thetemperature outside drops to around 2 degrees! But not as freezing as the bathroom ... read more
